Pixologic had an extremely exciting show at SIGGRAPH, with a full house -- often spilling over into the aisles -- for every presentation. For those of you who were able to attend, it was great to get a chance to speak with you in person! For everyone else, we wanted to do something special to share what all the buzz was about, as well as to give you a preview of what's in store for the near future.

Please take a few minutes to visit our Recap Page (http://pixologic.com/zbrush/interviews/sigrecap.html), which shares the highlights of the show. Be sure to view the Quicktime movie that we have prepared, with excerpts from the presentations that we gave several times each day. You'll get a chance to see some of ZBrush 2.5's upcoming features in action, as well as your first look at the three plugins that we'll be making available (for FREE to current registered customers) over the time leading up to 2.5's release.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our special guests -- Meats Meier, Aaron Sims, Rick Baker, and Timur "Taron" Baysal -- for taking time to speak at SIGGRAPH about their experiences with ZBrush. We hope that their hands aren't permanently cramped from all the posters that they signed! ;)

Thank you, everyone, for your ongoing support as we take ZBrush to new heights!

Well I am certainly impressed! And very appreciateive of being able to get the 3 plug ins. As well as the new version when it comes out. I do hope that there is a zscript or something that will help to learn how to utilize these plug ins, it looks so easy in the video clip, but I suspect it will take some studying to effectively use everything!!

All I can say is THANKS!!:D

Great work in getting this all together! Nice job.

Siggraph was a great time for me, thank you to everyone that I got a chance to meet!

Ryan - it's great to have a record of how destroyed your voice was a few days into the show ;)

Thanks again -

Hey Meats! Yeah, that was day 2! I kind of miss the voice though. ;)

Been thinking of ways to get it back: chain smoking, eating gravel... We'll see. :D

Best,

I have just watched Siggraph 2005 Recap, and new features looks very good. Congrulations Pixologic Stuff..

I have a question.. is there any new UV unwrap tools in ZBrush 2.5 like pelting (pelt Mapping). Because in Recap video there is a feature, which looks UV unwrap tool. I hope it is...

What you are seeing is ZMapper's feature that morphs between the 3D model and the 2D texture map. This makes it very easy to spot problem areas with the UV mapping, and has some other nice benefits. It's not a UV mapping application, however.

Pardon me for asking, but what is the difference between it and a UV mapping tool? Mind you I don't really understand what a UV mapping tool is either. :o

--

Also, in the video when those textures were being stamped onto the beast's leg, is that something that's possible today w/o projection master?

ryankingslien
08-19-05, 10:52 AM
Hello Bill -
The stamping of the beast's leg is 100% possible today.
Drop your model into Projection Master with deformations on.
Select the Direction Brush
Select an Alpha
If the alpha is square, in the Alpha palette set the rf (radial fade) till you get a nice soft quality to the alpha.
Drag out the alpha and rotate it to size.
Repeat as needed.
Done.

ZMapper is a normal map generator. It's Morph UV unwraps the model according to your UVs. this requires you to have the UVs laid out prior to using this function. A UV Mapping tool would be one you use to create the UV layout to begin with. :)

Bill, read this:
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=8558
It's Ken Brillinat's UV mapping tutorial and should give you an idea what it's all about.

In rough terms: UV mapping is the 'art' of relating sections of your texture to sections of your geometry.

The tool aurick references is more a 'viewer' in that respect and lacks 'editing' capabilities. But what a great asset that is. You can check instantly what the result of your AUV,GUV or other projections are.

If one would be able to 'edit' the texture and/or the UV 'Grid' in the 2D mode of that tool while being able to quickly morph back and force, everybody in Pixologic would become a millionaire and they would stop working for us. AND who needs that....;)

Cheers
LemonNado

question:

if zmapper isn't a uv mapping solution, then what, aside from being able to see where uv problems might arise like aurick said, is main function/purpose of zmapper?

edit:

oooohh, texturing multiple texture maps at once, right? silly me

edit2:

just watched the recap again, i see the fantastic stuff that zmapper is doing, so nevermind I guess. :tu:

does anyone know if there's been any talk about painting specular maps and view them in realtime in zbrush, instead of having to work through blending different matterials?

Thanks for the answers.

The reason I had asked about the projection master is that in the video it looks like they stamp the pattern on, rotate the model and then do it again.

Isn't one of the limitations of the projection master that you can't rotate the model? If so does that mean that you can do that sort of stuff w/o the limiations of the projection master? Or maybe the video is missing a few button clicks.

does that mean that Tangeant Normal map generated from Zbrush will finally work?

so... when will the plugin be available?

Great work has been done for this next update!
Probably will be better to have a 64 bit XP PC
with more than 4GB to get 20.000.000 poli!

Wow 20Mill Poly, thats incredible! But will that be the case that you indeed need a 64 bit XP running and more ram? Sucks for me if that true, but im also looking very forward to the rigging.

abxy
08-19-05, 06:55 PM
My bet is just that some optimizations have been made in the zbrush code that let you get an even higher poly count on the same hardware you already have.

So someone that was able to reach to old poly limit will probably be able to reach the new one without having to upgrade, and those of us who couldn't get too high before will be able to play with a lot more polys.

I really hope so that would be great, right now im able to exceed the 1 million poly count and still improve the model, but my system does slow down.

Im running XP Pro on a P4 2.6Ghz @ 3Ghz / 1GB PC 3200 DDR 400 in Dual Channel.

I noticed that in the video, Aaron was using some tools I haven't seen before while working on his model. I certainly hope they are included in 2.5 because one in particular looks great for carving small lines etc. I have been looking for something like that.

Northstar - Aaron was using ZBrush 2. All the tools he used are available now. if you check out his DVD you should be able to figure it out. :)

When can we get the wonderful news features of Zb???, the normal maps needs a single video for a very good demostration :tu: .

Are you planning for the next version of zb (2.5) change (or add) lights of the render engine?

Thanks

PS: We need info :D
