Thanks Ryan!
Thats DEFINITIVELY what I was looking for!
Thanks!!!
So we would have to purchase the Gnome Library first to use this, am I correct?

Does this script only work with the Gnomon alphas on the Gnomon DVD or can it be used with any set of alphas? If it is proprietary to the Gnomon set then I don't see any real reason to use it if one does not have the DVD (of course I have the DVD on order :D )

Hello -
This ZScript utility works exclusively with the Gnomon Alpha Library so you would have to have that library first to make this useful. :)
Enjoy,
Ryan
thanks to everyone who was involved in this. look forward to testing the alphas out!

Yes, it looks I forgot to get one DVD yesterday that I should have.
ryankingslien, Will this script be updated in the future so we can add our own Alphas to the browser?
This is the first time that I am aware of that someone ha made a Zscript that is restricted to buying another product to use it.

Hi all...
Just wanted to say a big thanks to Ofer, Ryan and Jaime for producing this super useful script. Very cool and much appreciated.
Can't wait to see the demos at the Pixologic booth!

This looks like a very handy utility. :tu:
As it has been released here rather than the Gnomon site I presume there's no particular reason why you shouldn't use it with your own alphas? As Aaron's tutorial shows you how to make your own alphas I imagine there's a 'save your own' version in the pipeline. In the meantime, and while you're waiting for your DVD, you can try out the browser like this:
1. Create a folder named AlphaBrowser. Place the AlphaBrowser.zsc inside and create three subfolders named Bumpy Skin, Leathery Skin and Scaly Skin.
2. Save your own alphas, either from ZBrush or Photoshop, naming them like this:
Bumpy Skin folder contains alphas named Bumpy Skin1.psd thru Bumpy Skin22.psd
Leathery Skin folder contains alphas named Leathery Skin1.psd thru Leathery Skin101.psd
Scaly Skin folder contains alphas named Scaly Skin_1.psd thru Scaly Skin_35.psd

Ok. Not sure what is wrong. I followed the instructions (simple enough) but when I try to run the script and plugin I get this:
error1.JPG
This is my directory
dir.JPG
What's more is when I click on the box with the triangle/exclamation mark it opens an import file box as if it wants me to find the file for it.
The names of the files from the Gnomon DVD look like this (if this is of any help)
names.JPG
It is not autoloading the alphas (is it supposed to?) and when I click on the button to do it manually it gives me an error (can't find the item).
??????????????????????????

I think that might be what you have to do
In the ZScript palette press Load. Navigate to where the ZScript is and press enter.
If everything was executed properly, a new Gnomon Alpha Library button will be added to the ZPlugin palette.
Open the ZPlug-in palette and press the button named Gnomon Alpha Library.
Click the thumbnail to load the alpha into your Alpha palette
Click the zoom icon to view the alpha in the Viewer Window.
Use the page numbers to see the rest of the alpha library!
Then again maybe not?

Your folders shouldn't have the underscore. Just name them 'Bumpy Skin' etc. with a space. Likewise, the file names, except for the Scaly Skin ones which SHOULD have the underscore before the number thus: Scaly Skin_1.psd .

I copied the files directly from the Gnomon DVD. They ALL have underscores. I am not going to manually rename them just to get them to work with this thing. There are 157 alpha files in those folders!!! It would have been nice had there been a clearer explanation of what had to be done beforehand to get this to actually work.
Let me explain once again:
I copied the Gnomon alpha folder from the Gnomon DVD to my alpah folder in my ZB directory. I followed the steps outlined by the script installation instructions. It doesn't work. All the alphas have underscores. All three folders have underscores. That is the way they were on the DVD.
wierdPal
08-02-05, 09:49 AM
Mentat, he said the .psd's should have the underscores. It's only the 3 file folders you need to rename I believe.
And if I am wrong there is a Zscript somewhere in here that batch renames files all in one stroke. So it's not going to be that big of a deal no matter what the case turns out to be. Good luck.
But really I think all you need to do is remove the underscore from the 3 folders.
marcus_civis
08-02-05, 09:49 AM
Ah, I misunderstood. I thought you were trying out the script as per my instructions. If you've done as per Ryan's instructions then it looks as though the script doesn't work as it should. :(
Try renaming the folders. The Scaly Skin alphas will work at least.
I wrote a zscript a while back for renaming files. If I can adapt it for this I'll post it. With Siggraph on, it will be a while before Pixologic update the zscript.
Mentat7
08-02-05, 09:57 AM
Nope. None of them worked. It's ok though. I have two monitors so I will just keep the PDF file that came with the DVD open on my other monitor so I can reference it when loading the alphas by hand.

Being that marcus wont be able to update his Zmats renaming zscript for this for a while, try this:
move your alphas folder, and make a test folder with a couple alphas.
Do a little trial, and error, and find out how they need to be written to load correctly.
Then you can use this free batch renaming utility and rename all alphas per alpha folder in one stroke, and you should have it.

Good luck man I want to some sucess with this. :D

Here's a script.
Unzip and load the zscript from the ZScript>Load button. Navigate to your Bumpy skin folder and load the first (number 1) .psd file. The script will convert all the files (originals will not be deleted). When that lots done, press the button again and do the same for the Leathery skin folder. Then again for the Scaly Skin folder.
Make sure your folders are named with no underscore:
Bumpy Skin
Leathery Skin
Scaly Skin
I think that now that should be OK.

Thanks marcus but that did not work. I renamed the folders as you said but when I tried to load the first bumpy file as the script directed it said "Not a Gnomon alpha file"
Here are pics of all the file names/directories:
Note that this is directly off the DVD and this is how they appear on my hard drive. I renamed the folders per your instructions on my HD.

Hi Marcus,
FYI: using your config info I have the AlphaBrowser.zsc up and running with a bunch of my own alphas renamed as per your file naming conventions.
The one difference from your suggestion is I put the Gnomon AlphaBrowser.zsc file in my ZStartup/ZPlugs folder. I placed the three alpha subfolders containing my renamed alphas in the ZPlugs directory too.
When I restart ZBrush, the Gnomon subgroup and AlphaBrowser appear automatically in the ZPlugin palette menu. I just dragged and saved the button to my interface shelf.
Thanks for the great tip! (Thanks to Gnomon/Pixologic for a very neat viewer, too!) :tu:

Mentat7,
Thanks for the pics. :) OK, I see the problem. I've updated the script and posted the update in my post above. Follow the instructions and all should be well.
Hi Sven,
Yes, I realized that it would work in the way you say but as Ryan's instructions don't suggest it I didn't mention it. But it really makes sense if you're going to use the alphas a lot.
It would be nice to be able to save your own alphas with a similar implementation, perhaps with a Shift-click to save the alpha in a particular slot... ;)
Cheers,

Marcus,
I tried your suggestions and had also did the same as Sven and it works like a charm with my own alphas. I woulda been too lazy to try and guess what the folder and filenames would need to be to have gotten it to work for my stuff!;)
Zlist is nice but plugins are nicer!!:D

I also renamed all the files as described here and it also worked for me - except for the 'Scaly Skin' directory. Any idea why the other 2 directories will load without a problem while the 'scaly skin' files will not? Exactly the same re-naming prodedure was performed on all the files.
marcus_civis
08-05-05, 08:39 AM
I should have highlighted it in my earlier post but the Scaly Skin files need an underscore before the number, thus:
Scaly Skin_1.psd
Scaly Skin_2.psd
etc.

Thanks! That did the trick!
I'm really excited about the Library as I have a cart-load of alphas, I like seeing them without loading my regular alpha palette with ones I'm not going to use.
But.... I am getting the same image as Mentat did on page 1. No thumbnails or zoom icon and that :ex: sign in the viewer. Funny thing is only Bumpy Skin1 will work but I have to reload everytime I re-start zbrush. I did dowload & installed your update.
I've included a small pic so that you can see the file setup and hopefully give me pointers as to what is going wrong? I would love to use this plug-in!

wenna,
You shouldn't have the folder named 'AlphaBrowser' if you're using the browser as a plugin. Your ZPlugs folder should look like this:
AlphaBrowser.zsc
Bumpy Skin (folder)
Leathery Skin (folder)
Scaly Skin (folder)
That should work!
oh well- got it working with my own alphas..upto number 22 in the bumpy directory before they are ignored. i am assuming that the limits are thereon the others as well.
Whilst gnomon have obvioulsy written this with their alpha dvd's in mind, I 'll still be creating my own so it becomes a bit annoying. Wish they would just release a version that picks up directories and scans them without the need for specific filenames etc
just hoping one of the many fine scripters out there can replicate it with freedom of alpha choice :D
El-d
i havent been able to get the library to load, i just get the big yellow triangle.
Heres a error i get at times. Picture 1.jpg
I tried renaming a file, but i just get 1 alpha in my alpha palette. Not in the gnomon alpha browers. Havnet figured out how to get the alpha converter to work, and rename, any infantly basic instructions?, im missing somthing.
Also is there a way to have the alpha browser always load? saving the congif didnt do it. -ken

el-d,
If you look at my post above you'll see that you can only have files named 'Bumpy Skin1.psd','Bumpy Skin2.psd', etc. up to 'Bumpy Skin22.psd'. After that you must name your files 'Leathery Skin1.psd' and so on up to 101 in the Leathery Skin folder, then 'Scaly Skin_1.psd' up to 35.
spaz8,
The converter posted above is to correct an error in the naming of the files on the Gnomon DVD. If you are naming your own files then you don't need it. To get the Alpha Browser to load on ZB startup put the AlphaBrowser.zsc, and the Bumpy Skin, Leathery Skin and Scaly Skin folders in you ZStartup\ZPlugs folder.
Here is a zscript that will copy any alpha so that it can be used with the Alpha Browser. Instructions in the zip.
Moderators, I assume you'll delete this if there's a problem!
Cheers marcus - I'd already spotted that, still a bit annoying that they are so specific and numbered...but that's gnomons choice. I'm sure they will have expanded the plugin to allow more alphas as and when they release the dvd's
would have been nice to have it open for all the alpha's I already have that are or are not bump leathery or scaly ;)

My Alpha2Gnomon converter will convert any format that you can import into the alpha palette. Basically what it does is asks you to select the files you want to use with the AlphaBrowser. You can shift-click in the Open dialog to select multiple files at once. It then loads them into the alpha palette. If the files are not already .psd it converts them, saving them with the right names to the bowser folders. It fills up the 'slots' sequentially so if you want to load more alphas at a later date just relaunch the converter.

The ZScript has been updated to accomodate the naming convention used with the shipped DVDs. To use rev B you will have to reinstall the alphas on your hard drive, if you have already renamed them.
Thank you Marcus_Civis for your early work on solving the initial problem. :)
Thanks Ryan.
Unfortunately, it appears that the corner zoom icon isn't loading with rev B.
More specifically, I get the exclamation graphic in place of the magnifying glass graphic. Anyone else get this or have I done something incorrectly?
BTW, I just happened to finish watching Aaron's Detailing Characters: ZBrush Alpha Library DVD today.
Great stuff!
Update: the alpha browser rev B works perfectly now.

There are two ways you can do this:
EITHER:
1.You can follow Ryan's instructions at the beginning of this thread.Copy the Bumpy_Skin, Leathery_Skin, Scaly_Skin folders to a folder on your hard drive (you can name it alpha_brushes). Put the AlphaBrowser.zsc (& the AlphaBrowser.psd) in the same folder (i.e. 'alpha_brushes'). Start ZBrush and load the AlphaBrowser.zsc from the ZScript>Load button. There will then be a button called 'Gnomon Alpha Browser' available in the ZPlugin menu. With this method you will have to load the AlphaBrowser.zsc each time you start ZBrush when you want to use the alpha browser.
OR:
2. Copy the Bumpy_Skin, Leathery_Skin, Scaly_Skin folders to a folder named 'ZPlugs' that you will need to create in your ZStartup folder. Put the AlphaBrowser.zsc in this new ZPlugs folder too. Restart ZBrush and the button called 'Gnomon Alpha Browser' will be available in the ZPlugin menu - and will be there EVERY ZB session.
Don't know if this is the way it is suppose to work but..
Have installed the alphas in the startup correctly.
I get the browser in the zplugin.
But.
Only the Bumps appears.
When I get to the end of the bumps there is no way
to see the leather or scaly.
How may I access the leather and scaly?
Redid the installation with the revised script but still the same
problem.
Many thanks in advance.

:) I can also see only the bumpy skin.. the other dirs won't load the names are correctly
First off this is an awesome script. I saw this at SIGGRAPH and it rules.
And I want to give much credit to those who have made this script useable for the rest of us Z users. And everyone that has posted on here about this script.
But (and I could be greatly misguided here) I believe there is a lot of contradicting here and not exact naming conventions being posted along with not exact set by step documentation of how to use this if you don’t have the DVD. I have read through all four pages of this post and all it did was send me in a loop because you guys are contradicting each other with your posts. I finally got this thing to work. And on my machine anyway this is the only way to get the "Alpha Browser" plug-in and Marcus_civis's "Alpha2Gnomon" converter to BOTH work together. And in my opinion one is useless without the other. ;)
And if you’re like me you don’t have the DVD and you just have a bunch of alphas that you have collected over the months/years and just want a better cooler way to view/use them.
1. Follow my naming conventions and spaces exactly.
2. If you don’t already have a "ZStartup" Folder make one. My directory is as follows “C:\Program Files\Pixologic\ZBrush2\ZStartup\Zplugs”
3. If you don’t already have a "ZPlugs" directory inside your "Zstartup" folder make one.
4. Put the contents of "alpha_brushes_revB.zip" into the "ZPlugs" folder
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/attachment.php?attachmentid=16785 (http://attachment.php?attachmentid=16785)
5. Also create three more folders inside "Zplugs" named (NAME THEM THIS EXACTLY :) )
6. "Bumpy Skin"
7. "Leathery Skin"
8. "Scaly Skin" Do all of these WITH NO UNDERSCORES.
9. You can now use marcus_civis's "Alpha2Gnomon" (Alpha2Gnomon.zsc.) correctly.
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/attachment.php?attachmentid=15783 (http://attachment.php?attachmentid=15783)
10. If you have these folders named anything but what I listed above this script will not work!!! ;)
11. I put his script in "ZStartup\Zplugs" so that it starts every time. And moved it to a shelf as well.
12. run "Alpha2Gnomon.zsc" and select or shift select all your alphas. It will then convert them to .PSD's and then copy and move them in to your Bumpy Skin, Leathery Skin, and Scaly Skin. Filling them up as it goes.
13. After it is done you will notice that the "Alpha Browser" still does not work. You now have to
14. Rename the folder "Bumpy Skin" to "Bumpy_Skin"
15. Rename the folder "Leathery Skin" to "Leathery_Skin"
16. Rename the folder "Scaly Skin" to "Scaly_Skin"
17. You will also notice that the "Alpha Browser" still does not work. You have to rename all of the new .PSD's in these folders as well. To do this I used the batch re-namer tool that WierdPal posted. You can dl it here. http://www.sofotex.com/Batch-File-R...oad_L21385.html (http://www.sofotex.com/Batch-File-Renamer-download_L21385.html). When you run this program basically just choose your directory then under General Options – Edit Name – Space & Underscores : chose Replace Spaces with Underscores. This will fix the file names of your alphas.
18. All of your textures need to be named like this "Bumpy_Skin_1.PSD", "Bumpy_Skin_20.PSD", "Leathery_Skin_1.PSD", Scaly_Skin_1.PSD" and so on and so on the "Bumpy_Skin_x” only goes to number 22. But don’t worry about the number part so much it is mainly the under scores in the correct place that are important. SO NO SPACES AT ALL JUST USE UNDERSCORES!
19. RESTART ZBURSH. Your "Alpha Browser" ("AlphaBrowser.zsc") should now work, I also but this script in "ZStartup\Zplugs" and made a shelf button out of it.
Again thanks to all who have posted and replied and posted scripts and links this rocks and ZBRUSH ROCKS!!! ;)
If I am wrong on any of this and there is a good chance that I am then please rip me a new one but this is the only way that I could get these scripts to work together and I just thought that someone should document it.

Blimey, --E--, that's quite a post. ;) Thanks for all the detail. I think most of the confusion has come about because of the different versions posted - my conversion utilities were written for the first version which has now been replaced, hence the need for your detective work.

There are lots of alphas available at the Pixologic Alpha Library (http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/alpha/)
And you can use the Alpha Loader plugin to organise them. It's available from the Download Center (http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/zplugins/)

marcus why can't they just make it easy and allow us to download packs instead of wasting hours with a flash interface that takes forever one by one?
if the option is there and i'm missing it then shame on me.;)
