Image Planes are a useful way to use photographs and other images in ZBrush. This plugin makes it easy to import an image and then move, scale or rotate it. The Plane3D can also be subdivided for sculpting or other transformations.
The plugin adds a button and a slider to a new Image Plane subpalette within the Texture palette.
Updated: March 21 2006
Click the LoadImage button to create an image plane. If a texture is selected that image will be used, otherwise you will be asked to choose an image file. The image should not be larger than 4096 pixels in either direction.
The plane is placed at the Z depth specified in the Picker palette Z slider. Click the Z slider and drag to the canvas to select the depth at that point.
Use the ImgSize slider to adjust the size of the image as a percentage of document size. The slider value can be changed at any time in Transform or Edit mode.
The butterflies image uses just image planes. The four different images used have areas of black which render transparent when the Texture>Transparent button is switched on.
Note: updated by Ryan Kingslien at Marcus' request to include include RevC of the zscript.

Marcus -
Just so I am clear. Image size relates to size within the canvas right? Not the size of the image itself? My tests seem to prove that out but just want to make sure.
Also, it would be cool if this had a "make image plane" button that did the same thing with a selected texture, in case it was already loaded. :D
What a wonderful present this morning.

Many thanks guys, I appreciate the comments. :)
Ryan,
Yes, the image size is adjusted as a percentage of document size - a value of 100 in the ImgSize slider will fill the canvas with the image, relevant to the image proportions. I thought that way would be more useful. If a larger size is needed the Gyro can be used in Size mode.
Following your suggestion, I've posted an update : now if a texture is selected in the texture palette that image will be loaded on to a plane, otherwise the open dialog will appear to select an image file.
Also I forgot to mention that the plane is placed at the Z depth in the Picker>Z slider.
Pilou,
I don't know if that is possible. It might be, but I will have to look into it when I have time.
50,
I don't know of another app with so many plugins. I guess it's all down to that ZB magic! :)

I definitely like this. Now you won't have to have such a huge canvas to sculpt in. When I get more time this weekend I'm definitely going to have to see what I can do with this.
Awesome stuff Marcus!
So simple yet very useful. I love it. Thanks Marcus.

Thanx Marcus.
But I have some strange problems when used this tool.
Some stroke when deforming the plane is ok but sometimes when I stroke it deformed all the plane global not local...
It' cleare? one stroke ok? but next in the the same region with the same properties of stroke deform all the plane in global...
strange...

Hi eof3D,
I think what is happening is that your brush stroke is going between the plane vertices and so moving the whole thing. The solution is to subdivide the plane so that it has a higher density. Press Tool>Geometry>Divide and all should be well.

Hi jasongri,
I'm not exactly sure what you're doing wrong. At what point are you clicking the Image Plane button?

Ok, i got that problem fixed, i reloaded the script after initializing and it seems to be woring fine.
But one thing i did notice is that the image resolution is low. can someone tell me how to raise this up. I'm getting blurry or jagged colors after i pick up my model. I've tried raising the texuture size before maping it with image plane and that still leaves jagged images especially where i have low poly faces. the model was started in maya and I generated an unwraped uv map there for the model. I'm not sure what to do now, any ideas are welcome.

Hi jasongri,
I'm glad you got it sorted. For your second problem it sounds as though you need to increase your model's texture size. If you accept the Projection Master default that will only be 1024 square. Select your model, create a new texture of the size you want, then drop in PM and continue.

thanks now im starting to get somewhere, but ZBrush only lets me make textures up to 4k is there a way to get it to go higher?
marcus_civis
05-12-06, 11:56 PM
I understand that you can increase the size to an 8K max by importing a blank texture of the size you want.

Hello Syed Noman Ahmed Rahmani,
Welcome to ZBC and that is a very good start to ZBrushing. I look forward to seeing how your model progresses.
A suggestion: post the picture again in the Main forum as a new post (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=2). I think you'll get more response. (This thread is really just about my Image Plane plugin.)
Good luck!

This sounds interesting. I don't know ZBrush well enough to compare, yet - I have to learn how to install this plugin -
but is this an automated way of putting a texture map and a flat white shader on a plane as if I did it myself manually within the GUI, or is it something essentially different?

The essential difference is that the process is automated. There's nothing here that you can't do with the options already available. The reason you might like to try the plugin is that it's a bit of a fiddle to initialize a plane to the same proportions as your image, place it in the centre of the canvas and scale it to fit. The plugin uses the currently selected material. To change the material on the plane, enter Edit mode immediately after loading the plane and select the new material.

Hi Benjamin,
You need the 3.1 version of Image Plane here:

Liquid is only for ZBrush 2.

Hi Everyone,
I'm having problems with Image Plane.
After I drop my model down, using the Projection Manager,
I can successfully add a photo texture by using LoadImage
from Image Plane, to my model. When
I press "G" to pick the model up, the texture disappears.
What am I doing wrong? Eric

Eric,
*If you are applying a texture to your model then check that you have assigned UVs.
*If you are using polypainting then make sure Tool>Texture>Colorize is on and fill your model with color using Color>Fill Object before dropping in Projection Master.

Hi Marcus,
I'm trying to add a photograph texture to put onto my model.
I am using the Demo Head model that comes with Zbrush.
I'm still having problems.
Here are my steps:
1. I crop and fill my canvas with a photograph of a face.
2. I drag my Demo Head onto the canvas and make it editable (T).
3. I clear the background picture. Cntrl + N
4. I click Projection Master and Drop the Demo Head to canvas.
(I checked Color and Fade)
4.In the Texture Palette, I select Load Image from Image Plane.
5. The image appears on my Demo head. I move it around to make adjustments.
6. I click on Projection Master to Pick up model.
7. The photograph texture disappears.
I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks again. Eric

Okay,
I discovered that when I use the DemoHead model included with Zbrush, the
texture disappears. When I use a 3D Shpere or create a bust using a 3Dsphere
the texture stays. Does this have to do with UV mapping? I'm still very unfamiliar with mapping. Do I need to enable something?
Thanks,
Eric
marcus_civis
06-19-09, 12:49 PM
Eric,
As I said, if you are applying a texture you need to have UVs assigned. The UVs are necessary so that the texture map is correctly mapped to the model. Without UVs the renderer has no way of knowing how you want the 2D map applied to the 3D model.
The Demo Head doesn't have UVs so you will need to:
1. Select the model you want to assign UVs for in the Tool palette.
2. Set Tool: Geometry: SDiv to 1
3. Create a new texture in the Texture palette of the size you want. 2048 x 2048 is a good size.
4. Press Tool: Texture: Enable UV
5. Press Tool: Texture: GuvTiles or AuvTiles
See here for more on Texturing:
