painting not working

Ive been modeling for a couple hours, and now when I try to use any painting tool, they only work while painting on an object thats already on the canvas. Any Idea what's up?

Have you checked your Draw palette settings? Make sure that you have ZADD turned on, or you'll have an effect like what you're describing.

ZADD is on, to clarify, the paint strokes are still changing the depth information over the places where there is already stuff on the cnavas, as well as changing the color.

euhm , is the material you are using the Flat Color Material ?
Is fog activated ? brushstrokes on the canvas appear behind the fog sometimes.
