the little animation test I did recently.
modelled , rigged and animated in XSI, textured in Body paint and Zbrush.
rendered in Lightwave

impressive... thumbs up !
I love the slime around the tongue. wonderful.

What is it for ? Are you using this one for a longer animation ?
I really hope so.

wonderful !!!

great all, modelling and texturing !!!
I hope to see the animation !!
thx for posting  :tu:

Very fine work
I especially like the slime in the mouth and the neck deformation in the animation

Nice done :tu:

Cool Creature! Nice deformation on the neck.:tu: :tu: :tu:
...watching again :) the ear also looks great.

I'm always curious about things like this, Did you parent the teeth after the blend shapes (if you used them?) looks like the gums and Teeth are a seperate mesh?

Hey G.
Looks like you're picking up XSI very nicely ... how do you like it compared to messiah so far? Why did you use LW to render, G? Is it b/c the workflow is somewhat better between LW and ZB2 or b/c you're more familiar with LW? Also, how did you get the animation data from XSI to LW ... I was going to say Point Oven but it doesn't support XSI just yet. :)

Cheers,

Chikega

Hi.
Thank you
Im glad you like it.
I cannot show the shader tree, since it was rendered in Lightwave , so.. there isn't any ;)

why Lightwave? because it's way faster then Mental Ray. ( and I have only one computer ;)

the animation data was all transfered with Point Oven (beta)

as always, jonkajtys, your work is beautiful. nice rigging as well - is that also in xsi?

the only thing i would crit is the saliva coming from the mouth - it looks a bit too static for spittle - i would expect some strands to break off, and dangle down, and maybe also fly out of the mouth.

but altogether lovely,

Hey Greg! Great work as I already told you. I love the saliva and the general mood of your scene. Top row material :tu:

Great job G.Jonkajtys! It was really nice!

Hope you can share some insight here. There are few question I would like to ask;

- How do you set up the bone for the facial expression and exspecially the neck. Love the muscle movement on for the neck. If possible, care to post a screenshot?

- Probly this is easy, how did you do the saliva?

Thanks!

Wow what a video =) yes the muscles are fantastic, itīs a real creature, but i think will be great alittle bit of movement (gyro) around the neck (looking the camera)

thank you everybody,
here are some screengrabs from my XSi scene.
for the underskin muscle movement, I have used the Shrink wrap deformer.
for saliva - cage deformer.

I am so impressed!!!! I watched the movie over and over and loved the movements, the blinking and the whole motion is so well done.
This is something I would love to be able to do myself and would be so proud to have done it, its absoloutly amazing. hmm, words cant actually describe how impressed I really am.... nice textures and modeling also by the way, lol,.. nearlly forgot about that bit as the movements were so cool,....;)

That's very beautiful! Congratulations. And it looks so much like your work, I really enjoy that very much. There are only a select few artists, who somehow exhibit this strong identifyable style in even the most complex designs, like the character of a face (nope, that's not written in the wrong order!). The little eyes, the large snout, it has a destinguished proportion, that somehow is found in all of your objects. Excellent work.

Rock on! :tu:

Greg,
I wouldn't of thought of the method you used for the spit, so I agree with Drummer. You've done a real nice piece of work here, congradulations! Must have more ;) .
Keep pushin' those pixols!

I am overhelmed with the positive comments,
thank you. Im glad you like it.

the muscle trick, is done with shrink wrap and the oval shapes you can see on the opengl images. the skin slides over those shapes.

the saliva has just transparency map applied to the geometry, as well as bump and hdri reflection map.

Really nice creature and animation! 2 Crits: I agree with someone that said the saliva looks a little stiff. It would be good to see some spittle shoot out when he opens his mouth, especially to give the idea that he is roaring or making sound. Also, I think the tongue needs more specular highlights to give the idea that it is in such a wet mouth instead of a dry mouth full of cobwebs. The tongue looks painfully dry right now. Overall, I really like what you've done here. :tu:

jonkajtys,
I was wondering, what method do you use to get the model into lightwave? Lynx's normal displacement? ZWave?

I can get my models into lightwave but they never have the fine details.

I use the bumpmap channel as well as the displacement but can't seem to get the details that nice.

I use 2048x2048 textures as well. Any tips or pointers would be appreciated.

I've done Warners tutorial as well. I would have alot more animation done if I could get my Lightwave version to look as good as the Zbrush version.

Thanks. :D

Great Work!:tu:

I would be intersted in the texturing thing...you mentioned you used zBrush AND bodypaint for texturing. Why did you use both or better asked...wich feature did you miss in zBrush and found in bodypaint?

jonkajtys
06-05-05, 10:33 AM
I have used Body Paint, to clone portions of the photographs onto the model.
I dont know if Zbrush can do that.

I have used Zbrush for bump and displacement.

I occaisionally hear of people using body paint AND Zbrush. I am wondering what it is you find that Bodypaint can do, that Zbrush doesn't. Basically, What is the advantage?

BodyPaint3D= The sum of all ZBrush 3d texturing/uv tools on steroids. If used in conjunction with a 3d package like XSI, Cinema4d etc. etc. you can paint in more then 9 channels and also deal with material's. I use XSI.BodyPaint3d, andZBrush together. Combine those and you have a 3d nuklear weapon.
If you can handle them all in a masterful way you can achieve ANYTHING. (A fact which prevents my 3d-world domination currently...sighhhh).
However, BP and ZB are only useful in conjunction with texture files and UV's. Other information (materials) cannot be exchanged.

Check out www.bodypaint3d.com for more.

Again, fantastic work jonkajtys. :tu: Your simple test inspired me to take an early lunch break from the cgi department here and add some sound to your animation. I just had to hear this thing shreik.

Looks great!!!!! Also the thing I find amazing is that I'm seeing so many people using other applications for rendering. I've been thinking of switching to something else like XSI for rendering as Maya seems to take far to much effort get half decent results. jonkajtys, I'm not overly familiar with Lightwave. What sort of maps do you have applied and what kind of lighting?
