Hi Mytholon,
This is a very good character. I especialy like your rendering style. It gives me the impression of crayon like drawing :tu: Any information about your technics and settings would be great ;)
Keep posting,

Drummer: Yeah, now that you mentioned it, it reminds me of the dragon in that movie. It also reminds me a bit of the dragon in Shrek (and of the donkey too!)
Dizzy: for my wip render I used a modified GI material based on a material posted elsewere in this forum by Mentat. For the light I used Pixolators white light, also posted somewhere in this forum (as to where, I hope French Pilou lends us a helping hand).
So this is a test composite.

Nice work Mytholon :tu: I very much like the cartoonish/exaggerated look. Loking forward to the colored version.

Awesome work, i also like the way u are presenting the steps of it's production :tu:
how did you put all the parts together?
Mytholon

So, this is the stage where I modify and create materials and render my passes. Then I composite the passes in PS.
After all that, I go back to ZBrush using my favorite pixol tools (paintbrush, smudge and Highlighter brushes) and I work on the composite.
Sum: if I wanted a 3D model as an output for another app, I would have created the model in one part.
If I wanted the 3D model for a ZBrush scene, I would have created parts (as I did) and then combine them using Multimarker.
In the case of this image however, I just wanted to have a pixol output, so I just composited the pieces together in PS.

Both of the main materials I used were modifications based on the Dragon Skin material by Aztec Solja (thank you for sharing Aztec. This is the most generous online community I have ever known.)

Fantastic!
Might I ask you a stoopid newbie question about compositing? What order do you stack your layers in, and which are the main merge options you use? I realise it's probably different for each picture, but is there a 'rule of thumb'? More than 3 layers and I start guessing .. and it gets messy. Thanks.

This looks great fully composited! Very Nice!:tu: :tu: :tu:
...I am also curious about the layers.. The two body materials, do you erase part of the layer to expose the underlying material?

I really like this work, the modeling is excellent and those materials are amazing, all in all a big thums up. :tu:
my my, how do you get the 2 material blend so well??? photoshop???
i just simply cannot get 2 materials blend in a very smooth way.
hope you share your experience. nice work by the way:tu::tu::tu::tu::tu::tu::tu:

Moochie, Sadicus, Sooon: I use photoshop AND the pixol tools in ZBrush (Especially Smudge and Highlighter brush) to blend materials.
In photoshop I use many layers (more than three) and most of the time I keep guessing and also hoping for happy accidents.
Usually I have the Material-Color passes on the bottom, erasing parts out with masks to show the materials I want.
Over those layers I have the Shadow pass, with multiply blend. I use parts of the Occlusion pass with low opacity and screen blending mode (or soft light some times).
I may re-use the Occlusion pass again as a overlay blend.
I may also use some of the Material-Color passes again as Overlay over all the above, always keeping only parts of the layers by masking staff out.
When I am happy with the result, I flatten everything up, and open the PSD in ZBrush where I may add and manipulate material blobs over the image with the Smudge brush.
I also add lights and shadows with the highlighter brushes. It sounds like a lot, but the whole post render process took about an hour of playing around for this dragon character.
I hope this was helpfull. Maybe in my next project I will cover those steps in more detail.

There was a request concerning the materials used, so following Aztec Solja's example of comradery, here they are.

Greetings, Mytholon. This is a very pleasant Dragon design, and well-presented to the end. Interesting technique. Nicely done. 50.
Great modeling, I love it!! And also thanks for the scales!

Hi mytholon,
I'm just seeing your last render, great job :tu: . I'm using the same kind of technique HERE (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=26250).
What kind of material are you using for your shadow pass, I'm not realy satified with mine (that you'll find in the link above). Any sugestion ???
Dizzy Boy ;)

Dizzy Boy, I would like to give you some exotic answer but the truth is, my shadow pass is done with the basic material on, somewhat modified (no speculars and no ambient, plus some cavity shading tweeking).
I saw your thread (very helpful research :tu:) and your shadow pass seems to me too light. The legs of your model have a overall shadow, but the model its missing "local" shadows. If you want the overall shadow, just render one more pass with local shadows and then combine the two passes.

Hi Mytholon,
You know what? I just realised that I composited a mistaked shadow pass with ... shadows turned off :o Well, I generaly work on Zbrush late at night so ...:D
Anyway, thanks for the tips
