View Full Version : Almost Monday Night Challenge 5/14-5/24
05-14-05, 08:54 PM
I might have to rename these challenges to the "oh damn I forgot again" challenge.
I will say that it is kind of disheartening to keep em going when no well next to no one participates. As I have said before I am open to suggestions......so if ya got one ya wanna see....let me know!!
That said this challenge is Celebrities.
Pick a fav or your Mom's favorite and model your favorite Celebrity. It can be a charactature (I think I spelled that wrong) or as real as you can make it.!!
#1. As always it's preferred to be all Zbrush but you can start a base in your chosen program.
#2. Please give us a timelapse pic or a script if possible.
#3. You must show us your base mesh along with final pic.
#4. If ya have the time...texture him/her up...make em live!!!
#5. Show us wips....it's fun to see how others tackle a problem/challenge.
#6. Again while not mandatory...if ya can...share the base mesh, or a script, or anything you learned along the way....give a little back!!
#7. Have fun or else!!
Remember these challenges are open to anyone and everyone so ....show us your new skills, newbies and you old timers out there....show us your stuff!!!
This challenges is for fun and kudo's only. Pixologic has nothing to do with it other than allowing us to enjoy and abuse their program to death and host our fun here on their forums. Remember to give them a big thank you now and then for such a cool program!!!

Mi favorite combination..
BART HITCH**** :D
05-14-05, 09:25 PM
hahahaha I now have a whole new vision of "The Birds" in my head!!
I have to say that is a combo I never would have thought of in a million years!!!!

Ok, I'm on it. Run out of time to finish my model tonight .. hopefully you'll see it tomorrow. Quick question though .. I did a zscript of my modelling, and it's turned out pretty neat. Obviously, it only goes up to when I stopped modelling tonight, but that is enough to show how slow and amateurish my working is. But .. when I played it back, at the end it hangs and I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del > End Task. I don't have time to learn all about editing scripts .. is there something simple I can do to cure this? And to prevent it in future? Thanks.
Oh, and thanks for setting the challenge up. You are a good boy and I am very grateful. :tu:
05-15-05, 05:21 PM
Actually .. you wanted to see WIPs, so here it is. Very unfinished. Supposed to be Bruce Willis. Used ZSpheres to get started.
05-15-05, 06:10 PM
Sorry my friend, I do wish to participate more, but it is a tight schedule.;)
05-15-05, 10:06 PM
He has Bruce's likeness...keep going!! Can you remember what your last action was before you stopped the zscript? If ya want you can pm me and I'll give ya my email and take a look at it...without seeing it I am not quite sure what is the cause.
I'll forgive ya if we get to see the dragon when it's done!!
After the fish_PARTY....
This is my last Work....:SCHWARZY
05-16-05, 04:15 AM
Very good your Schwarzy
05-16-05, 04:27 AM
OK aminuts, you're on. My partner loved the dragon as well. Seeing as he created the concept, this is a good sign. As the dragon and the other characters come to life, I will post them. ;)
05-16-05, 05:45 AM
Here is my attempt at a caricature of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
05-16-05, 06:25 PM
Ooooopssss. I didn't see this Challenge..... It's still running! Wheeeeee.
I never tried a head.... Well, let's see if I can WIP something together.
05-17-05, 12:45 AM
Well, I kinda 'lost' him when I started pulling his face into a more interesting grimace. So this is version 1, just for the record. I'll try going back to the point where his likeness started disappearing and try something different. 'Tis Bruce Willis. Sorta. Good learning experience, though.
05-17-05, 04:39 AM
Great image, Moochie.
05-17-05, 03:17 PM
I have no intention to hurt one's feelings by placing this head, but it is a great head to make a cartoon from. Next try maybe Bush...
05-17-05, 03:22 PM
hey, love the nose and the lips !!!
it is not easy sculpt a clothing from the same mesh of the head.....
cool, Bas  :tu:

Yeah, a lot of work that towel. The head took 234 mb!
05-17-05, 03:58 PM
This is my last Work....:SCHWARZY
I should like to know why you stop Z-brushing. Please make more work!
05-17-05, 04:14 PM
Nice Towel Bas! Is it part of the head or a separate group? Looks absolutely stunning.
Check out www.RealFlow.com and download the Demo. Flowing stuff!. And fully functional. Except for an every 15 minute recurring annoyance that you shall buy if you decide to use it....
And don't forget the http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=25887 Animal thread. The poor thread is all lonely and deserted.
It's celebrity zombie time! I thought why not do the celebrity that made it biggest of all, Ronald Reagan! The quote is from a radio microphone test from 1984.
"My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. The bombing begins in five minutes."
It was a lot funnier back then during the cold war...
Z-Brush with shadows set to 1 to give cutout looking shadows and add a nice watercolor illustration feel. Color Saturartion turned up in photoshop.
05-17-05, 10:10 PM
Great stuff everyone!!!
keep em coming!!
05-18-05, 01:33 AM
Lemmo, the towel is a part of the head, not separate.
05-18-05, 03:04 AM
Dickie : great head !!! I love the lights!
as always light and color in all your work are very good !!
cool :) :tu:
05-18-05, 05:06 AM
Now I have to get the coffee out of my keyboard Dickie..... LOL
05-18-05, 06:21 PM
Honestly, I just turned my back for 10 minutes, and Bruce morphed into Jack Nicholson, who was busy morphing into the Joker. Tried texturing him, but messed up (little beggar wouldn't keep still!), so here is the plain version. Same mesh as Bruce.
That's a hell of a Jack Nicholson, Moochie! Really good likness...:tu:
05-19-05, 04:48 AM
oh wow thats so cool !!! you gotta take jack all the way
this could deffo get to toprow  :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:

Here is my attempt on Vin Diesel as BirdMan....
I could not get hids @%$#@%$#@ nose right... sighhhh... I am such a noob... grrrrrrrr.... (head banging on table) So I decided to give him the nose he deserves for being so stubborn :D
Rough cut in XSI and push, pull, swear, tweak in ZB... I will continue to work on it... Maybe I can get the nose right..... For today I had it. Exhausting head modeling......
PS: Does IT look in any way like Diesel??? besides the nose....
05-20-05, 09:49 AM
Yeh .. he's close! Maybe the face needs lengthening a bit. Not sure about the skin shader. :D
Check out the reference photo here: http://www.celebstation.org/picture/11275/Vin_Diesel
even better is all the comments below his picture.
Good work on your first head. You is a noggin-virgin no longer.
05-20-05, 09:52 AM
actually it does kinda look like him...forehead, mouth, shape of face...looks great so far!
05-20-05, 09:54 AM
Lool noggin-virgin hahaha. And shader fits to the nose :D. I'll push his nose back and attempt a real skin for the update.
PS: Thanks for the reference pic.
05-20-05, 10:14 AM
I think we see them fly too much :D
Sorry, they are my past works.
They are A.J & H.W & K.R & A.P & J.M ;)
05-20-05, 01:40 PM
Nice work Pigma. The models may be oldies, but they're still goodies.
05-20-05, 02:20 PM
I really like the skin tones you used on JM.
05-20-05, 03:46 PM
Nice, goodlooking work Pigma!
05-20-05, 10:30 PM
I agree...oldies but goodies!
Thanks for dropping by!!
05-21-05, 01:45 AM
This is a pretty ambitious project for me as I have no idea how to complete it. I am sure I will learn alot along the way.
Any tips on modeling realism in ZB would be appreciated. I am also experimenting with creating the basic mesh in MAYA and importing to ZB fordetails and painting frank.jpg .
05-21-05, 02:54 AM
What a brilliant idea! Of course! Mug-shots! You have already learnt the most important lesson .. the one no-one can teach you .. to think laterally. Your success is assured. Now all you gotta do is master the tools, and that's just time and application.
Couple of tips that might help. Concentrate on the defining characteristics of the target, much like a caricaturist does (spelling checked!), and make sure the basic shapes are right at each sub-d level before going up to the next level. And save often! Good luck.:D
Sorry, they are my past works.
They are A.J & H.W & K.L & A.P & J.M ;)
Thank you. It's very good.:)
K.L. ? - I think you mean Keanu Reeves ?!
Thank you Arts.
I had made a mistake in the spelling of that name. :o
I changed R into L in the text.
This Flat vergion. celebrity1.jpg
Everyone thank you for comments.
05-21-05, 09:29 AM
Thanks! I found a bunch of celebrity mug shots at smoking gun.com

An excellent looking Frank! :tu:
Great Googly Moogly, that's a fine Zappa...
Oh, and don't eat the yellow snow...
05-21-05, 10:06 PM
I was just listening to Frank Zappa reading out loud the "Talking A**hole" from the Naked Lunch when I came online just now.
Good likeness....brings back alot of party memories I have to say!:D
05-22-05, 02:16 AM
Started again, better this time, Learning so much along the way. I should back to the manual and learn about modling with Z-balls but instead "I did it myyyyyyy waaaayyyyy..."
05-22-05, 02:46 AM
Yes .. the mesh has a good natural flow to it. Don't forget to introduce edgeloops for the eye areas and to extrude some geometry for the ears, before the mesh gets too dense. :tu:
The mug shot idea was a false lead, unfortunately. All the ones I could find on-line were far too small to be of much practical use. And most of the interesting ones were 'face on' only .. no side views. Shame.
05-23-05, 10:14 AM
Thanks for the tips.
I got mine at http://www.thesmokinggun.com/mugshots/index.html
The older ones tend to have front and side shots while the new ones do not. I agree the detail is not great but still a usefull reference.
05-29-05, 01:23 AM
This is my first attempt at Portaiture/realism in CG. Based on Moochie's reminder, I scrapped my last head and started again at a lower resolution. This one is closer than ever. It is as far as I can go without giving up symetry. This guys face was all ****eyed! So Now I will begin to capture all the asymetry.
05-29-05, 01:50 AM
This guys face was all ****eyed! [/ATT]Not suggesting police brutality, are ya?
Looking good. How are you planning to tackle the hair? :tu:
05-29-05, 02:30 PM
Not suggesting police brutality, are ya?
Looking good. How are you planning to tackle the hair? :tu:I have no idea how I will do the hair... I will probaly try a few different ways. Rendered, sculpted or one of those cool zbrushes!
He does look a little like Lee harvey Oswald post arrest... The eyes should be less puffy by the time I am done. But overall, I think the guy just had a weird head.
I would love to find out how to create pores and lines as well as how to do eyelids. Shearch around but have not found the right stuff yet...
05-31-05, 03:08 PM
Pores and wrinkles and lines .. get the mesh as dense as your computer can stand it (you'll know when you go too far, cos ZB will crash). Drop the model in Projection Master and use some nice alphas. There was an earlier Challenge all about alphas and you'll find loads of generously donated freebies there. Good luck .. the blue eyed, weird head is looking good.
06-03-05, 04:21 AM
Cool, it's coming! Do not hesitate to use other faces refs, to see other relief inofrmations, because this photo is not the best... find other pics of him on google...
06-22-05, 01:19 AM
I learned a lot with this head, but I am getting tired of it. I may come back to it once I assimilate the new skills but feel an urge to make some monsters first!
06-22-05, 10:48 AM
Wise move .. all models have a shelf-life. Once you start to get bored with one, or have wrung as much as you can learn out of it, it's time to move on. Frank looks really good, and it was cool to see how you developed the project. Look forward to seeing what you come up with next.
HEY, I MODELED JACK NICHOLSON TOO, HOPE YOU LIKE IT, SORRY MY ENGLISH...........C&C PLEASE!!!......
