The little Hellboy is cute! Reminds me of those Bobblehead toys :D

I'm sorry if the answer is really obvious but... why does HULK appear to have a triangulated mesh? Or did you import him from another app?

iming
06-27-05, 10:52 PM
the original ZB mesh polygons count is way too high,
and i need to reduce it down inorder to send the models for Rapid Prototyping.
so i export it into another app to reduce the polys and resulting the triangulate
mesh, after that it was export into ZB again for some final touchup.

here are some images of the Rapid Protyping physical objects.hellboyrp.jpg

Hi:)

Great models! How do you do this rapid prototyping thing? is it a service of some kind?

iming
06-28-05, 08:02 AM
yes, it was send to a company that has the machines to do it.
here is a site that you can find more details:
http://www.zcorp.com/products/demo.asp?ID=1

btw, depends on the machines types and materials that you choose
for the RP, the quality and surfaces will vary.
my models are usually printed from the Zcorp machine
which has a grainny rough surface.
as for the one that showned above, it has been sand and smooth manually
and coated with primer.

That turned out really nice! What type of material is your RP model made out of? Are you going to make a mold...;) and if so what material would you cast it with?

iming
06-28-05, 08:24 AM
the material is mainly plaster powder and with some mixtures
of resin and glue. its very fragile though so must handle very carefully!
haven't decided of what to do with it at this moment, if i decided to cast,
i'll get someone to do it, mostly resin will be use for the casting.

I printed these for taron on the envision printer at DesignWorks in thousand Oaks. It prints in A_B Urithan. I had a decent number of polygons and then I converted them to Nurbs with Maya. From there I can bring it into Solidworks and make bosses and fittings.

You are using the Zcorp Wax printer?

wow! what a fine print !!! i've heard of envision, it cost a lot more to print
in zcorp. if i've the $$$$ i'd want to try it in future !

did you use GeoMagic for the nurb conversion?
also, what are the bosses and fitting about? is it for buildiing the mold and cavity purposes?

What machine did you use to make these?

crossbones

Envision is cheaper then Zcorp.

You guys can ask taron to post more pictures on his site as the mask belongs to him. He has it next to his computer :-)

At Art Center, where I am in my 6th term ( going on exchange to Israel next term) I learned of how to do amazing rapid Prototyping and produced some amazing things creating all sorts of techniques to get my LW/ZB models into a SoildWorks based file.

It goes like this, Model in LW, Bring it into Zbrush. Get dense enough with your detail and then export your mesh OBJ to MAYA. Use maya export convert Poly to Sub D, Sub D to Nurbs. Then bring it into Soildworks and from there you can make hinges, pivots and all those things to make a production based model. This is the technique I created and I hope you can replicate it..

Shortly thereafter we did some prints of butch. This was taken straight out of messiah, meaning directly from the frame in the animation using messiah's exporting functions. I gave this to Neville Page.

ahhh lucky to be able to print all those stuff...

For my work (unfortunatly I cant show you :( ) Ive sculpted a lot of gothic frames, dorrs and columns.
Ive also sculpted a nice Jeanne of arc sculpt, that would have been damn cool to be able to print it...

Its a nice object that taaron modled... could make a nice key holder!

Just so I make myself clear, the reason I use Solidworks is so I can make my molds digitally and tear apart the model to attach things. Its an extremely powerful program, I like it.

hi crossbones,
i'm not too sure how much is the machine price compare with the zcorp & envision.
but i remembered i tried one of the serevices bureau for the envision print
and it charges a lot more .
so, where did you get your print from, i'd like to ask them for a quote for my next job.

btw, thanks for sharing the tips on the nurbs conversion.

DesignWorks in thousand Oaks. Nice people there. They have an envision machine there that can do models pretty big. It also prints faster.

The machines themseleves are usually leased because of tax benifits. They run anywhere between 40,000 and up.

Gentle Giant studios, they also have one as well.

The only negative aspect of 3D printing in my experience is paint. There is no excuse or reason why they can't also paint textures on the models either after or as its printing. All you would need is some sort of ink cartridge.

the high end Zcorp machine can print in simple color.
i believe in few years to come, it'll be able to print in color just like
the way the desktop printer .

Could anyone point me to a company that would provide the service of 3D printing, instead of selling the 3D Printers? I'm more than interested in finding a way to print 3d models, but I cannot afford such printers... It would be specially super if someone knew a company that provided such services and could work with international orders .

Thanks anyway in advance :D

for anyone curious, an invision printer is about £37,000.

In the UK I know of 2 places that offer print services, both are very helpful.

Synapse have a thermojet and a SLS system, and offer very fast turnaround:

http://www.synapse-creative.com/

The Royal College of Art have several printers including a zcorp, a sla viper, and a small run invision system.

while on this topic, a feature request:

it'd be great to get STL export from zbrush. Several 3dprint places I've called can't load OBJ, and its proving almost impossible to convert our 1.7million poly models without crashing every piece of software we have.

If zbrush could save STL directly, getting high-quality models printed would be much much easier. We've had to drop down a level or 2, which due to the nature of 3dprint technology, shows up as nasty faceting on the final printed model.

Please pixologic? Pleeeeeaaaasse? :)

its not hard to convert OBJ to STL. You can even do it out of Maya, Studio Tools,Solidworks, Polytrans or any other package.

STL file format requires some settings in place for tolerance. I am going to ask Chris Reid once he is done with "the plugin" to write us one.

Can anyone provide me with STL documentation?

mestela

I know its not hard to convert obj to stl.

The problem is converting zbrush generated obj to stl.

Maya can't even load our highest res meshes without crashing, let alone convert it. It'd all be a lot simpler if zbrush could just generate the stl files directly.

Solid works and Alias Studio tools I've exported millions of polys to STL.

I will ask Chris Reid to help us out in this area. Its definately something that we need.
