AMNC---MATERIALS.jpg
Hi everybody.
Thanks to Svengali we have a great little plugin called Zmats! If you don't already have it...get it here (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=23721&page=4&pp=15)! This is gonna hopefully be very useful for you and your fellow challenge takers to hold some new cool materials.
This week's challenge is going to be left open so that if you create a new great material in the future you can post it here so Pixologic and fellow zbrushers can find it quicker!
Anyway this challenge is to challenge you guys to create some materials. We will start off with some categories and if you can think of some others...we'll add em too. So.....
here are some categories of materials that might be useful to fellow zbrushers:
The Ultimate Skin The Ultimate Metals
The Ultimate Wood The Ultimate Marble
The Ultimate Water The Ultimate Glass
The Ultimate Terrain The Ultimate Stone
The Ultimate Fabrics The Ultimate Alien
Rules:
1. If your material is dependent on a light setup...please post that up as well. Also tell us the render settings you used for that best render!!
2. Please post an example of your material at work!
3. If you learned something about any material settings, please share those too! Specially if you used any special curve settings.
4. Also if you used a material that is color dependent, let us know what the rgb color settings are.
5. You can start a challenge within this challenge....for instance....if you are having trouble creating something like in this recent thread (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=24445) then by all means challenge your fellow Zbrushers to create it!!
6. OOPS! Almost forgot the most important part......
Please please please.....include your nick in the name of the material so that we might give you credit later on when we use it!!!!! for example ....
Jantimswaycoolpaintedmetal023.zmt
This and all MNC challenges are open to everybody!! Newbies....if you discovered a new cool material...share it with us......all you vets out there have learned something along the way......please give the rest of us some hints!!
This mission, should you choose to accept it is for fun and bragging rights only, ZBC and Pixologic have nothing to do with it other than allowing us to have fun with their fantastic program, no prizes other than the pride and kudos you get from creating something cool and if your lucky some kudos from the likes of Meats and Antropus etc.
Good luck and have fun exploring!!

A nice marble material is not easy to make , that is if you dont use a texture map !
I made this kinda fake looking plasticmarble , if you use the diffuseslider in channel 4, you can give it a nice glow at the rim of the objekt you use this material on !

This looks like it'll be a good thead I'll have to make something. But I'd like to plant a thoughtseed about a future zbrush implementation.
Now that we have 4 shader materials it would be really handy to be able to turn each one off or on independently. That would make designing materials so much easier.

yes material pack plus Southern materials work well in z2.
infact they are great foundations for creating and learning how mats work.
and by the way.....you sir are not excluded.....I challenge you to create an interesting material or 6 with the version you have!! I know if you take it up we are all infor a treat.!
Is it stone, ...is it wood.....? Who knows ,and it has a lot of decay, so i named it stonewooddecay...or was that woodstonedecay.?........

I hope to put up more later. BTW, there is a light setup too, nothing special.

if you are using winrar.....change the rar to zip when you create the file.....should be a setting to change to zip....then you can upload it if it's under the file limit size.

I have been trying to get Pixolator's white material to fill in the recess areas of a model with gold or an antique gold. I think MTB posted one where he got the recess areas of the model to be black. I can not find his (MTB's) link again on it if I do I'll post it.

A cast iron material. The pot is a bit rough, but it's just a test for the material.:D The material was too large to post so i ommited Texr 22 from the s4 shader. Just add it back under "material texture" browse to Texr22 for s4. I don't think it actually made much difference with or without..

hi,
There is not a whole lot on materials yet, You can find some useful info in the 1.55b manual for one. I recommend following alot of Jantim's threads....he's very good about sharing what he learns as he goes!!!:D A search will also turn up some old cool materials and here and there some tips from none other than Pixolator or Aurick.
Also RyanKingslein (hope i spelled that right!!) wrote a brief pdf on what he discovered about materials......he promises he is working on a more in depth tutorial so keep an eye out for that!!!!
a big help to you will be to download Sven's script (link found on first page of this thread) It allows you to save materials with light setups so you can see how any material looks under your favorite lights......so you can start with material a...alter it, change lights etc etc and save each incarnation!
hope that helps some!

hi,
Here is a link to Pixolator's cool mat and lights. He posted a .zbr which you can load in the document window and that will load his material and light settings all you have to do is go to the respective menus and save the set up.
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=13928
In the pic you posted Pixolator has used colored lights to give it color...he likes to do a warm and cold light with a neutral one in the middle so if you are looking for that exact look you will have to mess around a bit with the color of the lights.
if you have any troubles let me know and I will attempt to help you with some settings so we can get it how you want it.

I haven't seen any glass or translucent shaders presented. Come to think of it, many of the posts on the forum in general don't use glass materials.
Any takers? Produce a convincing glass shaders with refraction, reflection, etc... maybe even some lighting to use with it?

hi headbirth,
A son of Zeus? ;)
A good challenge for sure.
I would like to point out some recent Water threads you might like to take a look at in the main forum.....they might give ya some ideas.
I, myself, have been wanting to delve into this a bit and will try this weekend to play....I have some notions to try with some very little known even less used features of zbrush that I think I can make work for some interesting results.....whatever they may be .....it will be fun experimenting and if I get the results I want, I will definitely post up mats, lights, and a tutorial.
But first and foremost will be the next newbie challenge. Then and only then, I play!!

That's great aminuts! I look forward to seeing the ressults.
After owning ZBrush for a year and not doing anything with it. I have finally gotten around to exploring and love what I'm seeing.
I haven't seen any glass or translucent shaders presented. Come to think of it, many of the posts on the forum in general don't use glass materials.
Any takers? Produce a convincing glass shaders with refraction, reflection, etc... maybe even some lighting to use with it?Well you can create a transparent material...but not one with refractions...for transparency you need two layers -you could use the refraction-option for transparency but then you need to bake the layer the object is going to "refract" ...confused ?....i know i am !....
I think it all has to do with this program and the fact that it is not a 3D program in its essence...its a paintingprogram with an edge...the pixol...a pixel that contains material and dept information...sometimes it just needs layers to get a result...creating a material is not the final answer
i've included a render of a icelandscape and the material used to make the icebergs-or i should say snowberg- the material is not transparent...but you can set your own transparency in the material sliders ....the icecube like material is an object drawn with RGB in a low setting, for more info about refraction surf to the thread from Bas !
