Welcome to ZBrush and the world of 3D!

X, Y and Z are referring to directions within 3D space. X is the horizontal line through the center of the canvas or an object. Y is the vertical line. Z is depth, going straight away from you.

Objects can be affected along an axis (such as stretched out along the X axis to become longer or along the Y axis to become taller). They can also be rotated around and axis (such as a rotating globe, which spins around the Y axis).

The various Tool modeling commands can can be restricted to a single axis or a pair of them to give you better control.

Be sure to check out the New Users section of the QuickLinks (there is a link to the QuickLinks at the top right of every page here at ZBC). You'll find lots of great tutorials to help you get started with ZBrush, and answers to some of the most commonly asked questions.
