View Full Version : Z Briney Deep (WIP)

There is still a lot more to be done with this, but I decided to go ahead an upload it anyway.
For all of you painter types, I believe that version 1.5 will fundamentally change the way that you paint. This picture has been created with almost no modeling, and no texturing at all! Only two items were actually modeled, and those took only about 10 minutes to create, total. In fact, this entire WIP so far has taken about 3 hours.
More updates to follow in the next couple of days, as time allows.
Here is a bit of detail:

Wow! That is awesome! And no modeling to speak of? Double wowser!
Can't wait to see the updates!

That's really cool! :tu: I like the coloring of the coral and the rays of sunlight streaming through the water.
I know you said your not finished with it yet, so I'm not sure if you thought if it already. The material used for the sand on the bottom looks a little flat, you might want to use that "sandy" looking material from the material pack for that. Other than that little thing, it looks great so far!
Matthew Thank you for posting this image. maybe I should have waited a while before asking for more paintings, and then since this only took about three hours maybe I spoke up at the right time.
This is fabulous, I can take you to a spot at Bloody Bay off Little Cayman where that image would fit right in except for the red coral.
Are you sure you never dived at Bloody Bay?
Looking forward to the updates.
Already a MasterPiece.

Very little modeling? Wow, I would have sworn that most of it was. It has a great depth feel to it, and I like the sun rays. :)

VERY nice, Matthew...!!! :D
You have undiscovered depth,(sorry.. ), to your talents...A great painting and somehow bright colors that seem restrained due to the way you placed them...Fine piece!

Thank you, my friends.
DeeVee, I've never been diving at all. While working on this picture, I found some websites with great pictures of coral reefs. ZBrush just made it very easy to re-create what I saw. Your comments, however, are very inspiring! It's one thing to think you got the style right and quite another to be told by someone who knows.
On reading everyone's posts, I would like to clarify something. While only a few mintues were spent modeling, almost all of this picture was created with 3D objects. The new features make it very easy to paint 3D objects with the same ease that you would paint a swath of color.
Similar results can be achieved with version 1.23b (such as my old Desert Sunset (http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=73172&Start=73&Artist=aurick&ByArtist=Yes)). It requires spending a lot of time placing every single object. Tedious, to say the least, but with nice results. With the new features, what used to take hours can now be done in minutes.
This is why I said that version 1.5 will fundamentally change the way that you paint. Now you can truly use 3D objects in a painterly fashion.

It's the same technique I used here Coral Nights (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=006826) That picture only took a couple of hours. The tools make a huge difference!

Yep, that's the deal...The new version will change how we paint and how we model!!! :D  :tu:

Ok, thanks for clearing that one up. I thought it looked very 3D to be painted. Still, it looks pretty nice to say the least! :)
Looks great, Aurick! :tu: What you discribe of quickly putting complex arrangements of objects down sounds great! :D

Very nice painting! I just have one question: is there a way to get the deep water feel that you have on the blue portion of your painting to also cover the coral. I am working on something similar and to me it looks like my plants & coral are sitting in front of the water instead of in it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
:) :tu:
You will have to use a combination of Fog and lighting, Northstarr. The Render>Modifiers>Fog has settings for near color, far color, near depth, far depth, and the curve between them.
Very pretty Aurick! It looks like what I've been hoping my reef aquarium will grow up into. Can't wait to see the updates on it :tu:

I turned to page two thinking, hey, I actually have the technical answer to someone's question - only to find you'd beaten me to it. Damn this time zone thing! ;)
Anyway, one extra little tip. The easy way to set the Depth1 and Depth2 values for the fog is to click on the button, drag to the canvas, and release over the pixols that have the depth you require, just like using the colour picker. Probably common knowledge, but it took me a while to realise so maybe it will help someone out there.
Back to the original post though: now you've got me just as agitated as everyone else seems to be waiting for 1.5 to become available. I really like the sound of this new feature, painting with 3D objects. And judging by this splendid effort, I'm going to enjoy it immensely. Thanks for the insight. :tu:
