View Full Version : Facing his twilight
This is my second attempt at a face in Z-brush. I wanted to do someone really wrinkly to see how much detail I could get out of Z-brush. Below are some pics of the progress and the final image.
Edited to include comparison to photo ref.

Is it a zbrush rendering?
Fizzy, excellent work on the final image there. I like the mood a lot. The sweater and shirt came out very nicely too.
My only crit would be to add a small rim light to the left. It looks like there is one there, but you might want to make it a wee bit cooler. Again, this is only my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt. The character is interesting. He kind of reminds me of an old watchmaker or something along those lines...Wonderful stuff, Fizzy...:D

Hey thanks for the replies guys.
Sebcesoir: I modelled the head in Lightwave and then took it into Z-brush to add the finer detail. I then took it back into Lightwave and rendered it using radiosity. The shirt and jumper were all done in Lightwave.
Dickie; I used a light probe to light the image using HDR. I created the HDR image in HDR shop and I seem to have a bit of trouble getting a really good image out of HDR shop so always have to brighten it up a lot. I think the warm glow is coming from the wall behind him but I agree with you in that to help the mood it might be better to have a blue tinted rim light.

Fizzy,
I love this! Especially the final image. Love the character, love the mood can't wait to see more from you. There sure has been a lot of great work here on this forum. keep it up
mm
thanks monstermaker, cool name by the way. I love Z-brush and will definatley be using it in future projects. I want to create some more fantasy images next. I love Werewolfs so may have a stab at one of them. Shame there covered in fur as it will hide all the detail...hmmm maybe i should make a bald one at least that would be different.

I designed a bald werewolf once I thought it was kind of cool. The one in Underworld is almost bald. Love to see what you would do. At some point I would like to ask you some questions about lightwave and using ZBrush with it. There seems to be a rash of old men here lately. Have you seen the one that Jim Mcpherson did and the one I did of my dad?
Good point, I liked underworld but still don't think there's been a better Werewolf film since American Werewolf In london.
The old man is based on my Grandad. I'd post an image but not sure how to with out interrupting other peoples work at the top of the page. Aurick just politely pointed out that I'd pushed everyone else posts of the top of the gallery when posting all the pics. Big apology for that I didn't realise that would happen. I think he's corrected that now so thanks Aurick.
I'll check out that image by Jim Mcphearson. What's your image called I'd love to see it.

It 'is cleverly called monstermaker's old man. It is about half way down the first page at the moment. There are several images on the different pages. the latest one on the last page. I like your opinions on werewolves I too am very fond of American Werewolf
Hey monstermaker I found it be accident I was just lookig at the top work in the gallery and thought wow look at that it's amazing, realised it was yours. That really is awesome work.
I know what your saying about trying to get the face to look like a person. I've sketched peoples faces all my life but doing it in 3D is another ball game. The amount of times it would look right from the fron and then you'd go to the side and it wouldn't match.
Hope to see more of your work, truely inspiring.

Excellent job Fizzy, really really dug the eyes in the I think fourth pic you posted up....zbrush or lw?
Check out this link (http://www.hdrsoft.com/index.html)..... I like to use it for playing with my photos and have been experimenting a bit with it and doing different render passes in zbrush to see what kind of effects I can come up with. there is a free version to check out.
Maybe it will help ya get what you are looking for maybe not.:D
I feel humble to have compliments from so many great artists on this board. I've been checking out peoples work and I really do think Zbrush has been such a huge leap for the 3D artist.
When I first started in 3D I was so frustrated with the way you had to create models. It's just so fiddly and backwards for an artist. I guess this is mainly due to restrictions in the math involved and the fact that the software was designed by programmers.
I really feel that Z-brush has put the artist back in control, I don't have to think about if I'm using tris or quads and I don't care for the poly flow except at the base level which is a fairly simple model. And of course texturing is now so simple I don't really care about UV's anymore. I know it's been said a thousand times before but Z-brush really is awesome.
Amnibus: The first 3 images are in Z-brush and the fourth was a test render in Lightwave. The only thing annoying about Lightwave at the moment is that it doesn't support sub pixel displacement so I usually export a base 2 or 3 level mesh from Z-brush to retain the detail. I also place the displacement map in the bump channel to pick up on the real fine detail. Also there's no SSS in Lightwave yet . There's ways to fake it but on this model I just didn't have time to experiment. So hopefully on the next one I'll give it a try.
Thanks for the link, this seems very similar to HDR shop. I'm going to continue playing around with HDR shop a bit more as it's free...well version 1 is. If I don't get any better results I might invest in that software. Cheers for that. :tu:
