View Full Version : Long Time No See!
Happy New Year, fellow Z-Brushers!
It's been a while since I posted. Been busy so I haven't had a chance to use
Z-Brush in a while. I Picked it up again this weekend as I had the week off for The holidays. Anyway, I whipped this puppy up to use as a Spray in HalfLife2 deathmatch. My Nickname is Dr. Sarcasmo, hence the Doc Sarcasmo signature on the pic.
I modeled the head in Z-Brush and did some color correction and painting in photoshop. I liked how it came out so I'm sharing with you. Feel free to post crits and props and any old thing ya want. I hope you all have a happy, healthy, prosperous New Year...

Well, it looks like aliens are taking over our creative processes.
Oh yeah, welcome back. :D

hey welcome back and happy new year!
Cool pic.
Must be the alien version of gene simmons!
It's nice to hear from the old gang again...:D
Here is a new and probably final version of the goblin head. I didn't like the ears, the eyes needed tweaking, the jawline was just too undefined, the color was too red and I hated the way the right eye was shadowed. So I fixed all that. Thanks for the input and the well wishes for the new year.
Work is gonna be nuts for a few months, so I'll probably not be as active as I used to be, but I want to be more active than I was, if that makes sense.
When I'm tired from work it's just too hard to come home and model sometimes. I really miss working in Z-Brush. I use LW at work, so Z-Brush is a nice change from what I normally do.

Double Post...Removed...
Dickie
Sorry for the Double Post...I DETEST this new way of editing...Well new to me .
It's been up for 5 months now...LOL
Still have trouble figuring out how the hell to submit an image in the message and without a thumbnail...
Here is an explanation of how the image was made. First, I took an model I made out of a Sphereized cube(B/W Head). I saw this technique on the forums from an OLD post and took the attatched file and modeled the first image you see.
I liked how the sphereized cube handled when I modeled. I normally use Z-Spheres so this was a new way to model in Z-Brush for me.
I then wanted to make some sort of goblin head for my HL2 Spray, so I started tweaking the model a bit (Pink Head). Played with that for 2 hours or so and came up with the third head (First Green One).
Tryed that out in the game and decided it needed to be a wee bit sillier and more taunting, as you spray this on the walls in HalfLife2 when you frag someone...:D
Decided to make his tongue stick out so I modeled the tongue and teeth. This conveyed the feeling I was looking for. I added some brown eyes I made with sphere primitives and then rendered. (First head on bottom.)
I then brought it into Photoshop and increased the contrast. I copied it over itself using overlay and added a gaussian blur. This blows out AND softens the image. I then tweaked contrast and Hue and Saturation. I wanted to keep the green as he is a goblin, so I didn't crank the hue much. I then tweaked the curve so I had some nice gamma spread.
Then I colorized the tongue and lips, colorized the eyes towards red and painted in the highlights on the eyeballs. I found if I lit the model the way I wanted, the eyes didn't get highlights. If I lit for highlights on the eyeballs,
the model was lit too flat. I decided on lighting I liked for the model and hand paint the highlights.
I used a traditional 3-point lighting on the model. 1 cool key to the upper left, a warm fill to the lower right and a slightly warm rim light to the upper right.
I seperated out the head from the background and applied a dropshadow.
Drew out a blue circle in the background and applied a drop shadow and bevel to it. Then using the same circle mask, I made a yellow-red-black circular gradient and applied it in the center of the blue ring.
The lights and materials are essentially the same ones I used for my orc model I made a while ago. Here is a link to that thread if you want to use
these feel free.

Thank you all for the 121. I hope this will give some new techniques you can use in your work.

Thanks for the positive input guys!
50's Kid: Always good to hear your opinions and I loved your "Christmas Story" Tribute image. I'm old enough for it to have brought back happy memories...;)
Aminuts: Happy New Year, Bro! He's actually a goblin, but he does look a lot like an alien.
Vlad:Glad to be here again too...:D I've been very busy with my regular job and so I was too tired to model for the last couple months. This will change, I hope...
Ranger999: Thank you, very much. After doing mostly effects for the last few months, it's nice to be able to make actual art again.
Jason: It's good to be back. The last coupla moths there was a hell of a spurt of creativity here. Very Cool stuff...
Andreseloy: Yes, he's happy because he gets used in a computer game when I kill the opponents...;)
Marciani: Yes it does remind me a LOT of the Looney Tunes opening. It's actually not planned, but I like it anyway...:D
