While I was working on one of my pieces yesterday, and getting very frustrated while doing so, I didn't reset my material and other settings when I imported an image I was going to work on. I apologize if this tip is posted somewhere else also, but I didn't ever come across it in my wanderings sooo...

What happened was I left the noise material selected when I cleared my layer and then imported my image onto a blank layer. The image took on the material of the currently selected material. I tried it with several materials and it gives a pretty cool effect sometimes. Below using my stock background image I did three examples to show how it looks.

Above with noise pattern 3.

I wasn't sure if these effects were being applied to the image or above so I best rendered and I still don't know. On noise pattern 3 the darkest areas of the material become transparent in a best render(not shown here). In clouds, some of the clouds almost seem to move forward giving a foggy kind of look.

Anyway something fun to play with if you didn't already know that it does that. :D

yes, a lot of newbies don't realise this which is why, when importing a texture onto a plane for manipulation it is best to use the flat colour material so the imported image will be bright.
