Decided to mess with zbrush using some models I did for a few clients sometime ago. I really enjoy working with zbrush, I just wish that Mental Ray rendered displacement map as unproblematic as Render Man. I’m currently trying to setup the use of displacement maps at work using Mental Ray, and it’s proven to be more burdensome than expected. Oh well maybe the next version of MentalRay might offer some better solutions.

That second model looks like a sculpture I saw a while back, did you do a sculpture like that? It's a really good model by the way.
[EDIT] And I'd LOVE to see the rest of that second model. Keep those updates a-comin'!

These have great potential. Very nice work.
Yep, your choice to re-visit your older materials with ZBrush seems an outstanding endevor. Love looking at your work!

That is really awesome. Makes me want to see more. Wider shots PLZ. Can you post a pic of that 2nd creature as a whole - like his entire body? ;)

Working from a production point of view - stick to REYES renderers like Renderman, Pixie, 3Delight, Air, Aqsis, etc., a lot more support and an aweful lot of useful shaders that have been proven in the film environment.
Everytime I try to do something simple in Maya, MentalRay and a few others it's a chore compared to a good REYES product simplicity. However I am old school and many people do like various render apps for various reasons. I just can't understand apps that aren't modular, requiring you to do a lot of work to alter something.
Love these characters though.

Hey Jason,
I completely agree I wish that Mental Images had better support for their product And as far as shaders are concerned I have been trying to get a decent skin shader that works with Mental Ray and so far nothing at all. I have tried the MISS shader but most of the results I get end up looking like wax no real specular break up.

Ah, that is the creature I thought it was. That's a very good likeness, great details, and awesome textures. Great work. Thanks for sharing!

Mindjuicer, I also tried several things with MentalRay and almost signed a very large deal with them, based on some post houses requests. I just wasn't satisfied, even though I have seen some decent images, very little good animation renders, even from their large customers.
If you want a quick way to set up and export to RIBs let me know, the price will be right (OpenSource)! I can also supply you with some great shaders if I scrounge around and avoid the propritary ones (or delete the special stuff). :D
If you have some animation of the beasties I might even offer the use of 20 or so nodes to render (RIBs).

Hi there,
Just in relation to Renderman / Mental ray:
I feel you can obtain decent results in mentalray - it just takes a lot ot trial and error work to optimise the necessary settings.....not to mention I good working knowledge of what all these settings mean in the first place.
Having said that, I don't think mentalray, or any other current renderer for that matter, will ever be as fast Renderman.
In terms of speed, Renderman simply leaves everything for dead - especially when you combine displacements with motion blur.

I agree that you could achieve decent renders with MentalRay. The thing is you don’t want to spend all of your time trying to reinventing the wheel everytime you're rendering something with MentalRay, and it doesn't help that there is very little documentation explaining any of the different features of MentalRay/Maya.
I wish we were using Renderman as oppose to MentalRay, the last feature I worked on we used z-brush and the displacement maps work beautifully well with Renderman.
Hey Jason, as far as exporting to a RIBs format I might take you up on that offer in the near future. I’ll keep in touch. Thanks

Jason Belec,
Sorry Mindjuicer for hijacking your thread here!
I'd also be interested in hearing what you are using as your reyes pipeline ? Are you using Liquid ? and which reyes render are you using at the end, I'd be interested in one that has support for Maya fur, preferably free if you know of any, RenderDotC has Maya fur compatibility, but is a paid for product, a opensource one would be great!
Regards
Fantastic works!!!:tu::tu::tu:
That second model looks like a sculpture I saw a while back, did you do a sculpture like that? It's a really good model by the way.
This actual is a sculpture which was created by the Japanese Artist Half Quarter.

Mindjuice you did a great job of replicating the original design, and I hope you don't mind that we also give props to the actual designer as well.

I thought I had seen that thing, I just couldn't remember where, or who did it. Thanks, tjnyc. Mindjuicer's model is a great likeness. We would all like to see more models though. :D
Fantastic work!
Mindjuicer, feel free to try out the Turtle Renderer For Maya on your models. It's far more simple to set up than MR and has some custom features to render ZBrush displacement from within Maya, as well as fast sss for nice skin effects.

I've tried Turtle B4, and it works great! Its actually really simple, and really fast!
the only thing that bothers me about it is that it doesnt support Fur and particle!
I also never been able to make decent fog in it!!!
Other then that, for displacement, bump map, color map, global illumination, final gather, sub surface scattering and caustic, its the best!!!
Not sure when its going to update to take all these unsupported stuff, but the day it will take them, its gonna be my 1st choice renderer!!!
Altough for now, since it doesnt, I use MR!!!
Cheers!

Well I guess I have to give it a shot and post up some renders.Since I won't be using any fur and most of the particles can be compisited I think I shoudl work fine in my case.

Well, as an alternative, With MR you cannot render Paint FX which is used for Trees and hair!
Well, same for fur, i guess that if you convert to poly, without deleting history on it, you can get it to render in Turtle as polys!!!
For particle, very true that you can composite it!
Which one is the best composition software for PC's that make 3D particles???
I know After Effect have a great plugin for it! But its darn expencive!
I've tried Combustion, but its 2D particle, and i dont like it!
!!!!
If some of you guy's got info on this, let me know Because Turtle is the best render so far! And i'm more then tierd of playing with MR with Plug and Pray :D
Cheers guy's !

Amazing work.
Is it supposed to be in the water? The rendring of the skin miss a lot of glossiness to render details, the textured model look flat compareid to the nontextures one.

Amazing, the level of detail you pulled off on the ultimate creature! I still have yet to see demonic creatures in any other app that rival the stuff you guys do in Zbrush... Breathtaking...
