You should also realize that you can also 'grab' a collection of 3D objects, and then skin that, if you want to try it...

This is a ring, cylinder, cone and sphere, turned into an alpha and skinned, the same Alpha used for the broad stroke background painting, then two different material copies of the skinned Alpha... ;)
