Just wanted to post a wip pic of my cyclops head. I took a lot of designs I liked, and added some of my own stuff. It was mostly just a day getting to this point - a simple mesh in Maya and then into Z Brush. ZB is certainly a modeler's best friend. :)

Pretty cool so far! I don't think I'd like to run into him in a dark alley.

Look forward to watching your progress!

Are you planning to animate it?

Are you going to texture it?

Don't know why there are so little people replying here, I think you've done a great job, I really like your little fella!

Keep pushing it, some areas aren't as detailed as others, also with textures he'll look pretty handsome ;-) Keep it up!

Nice work! The mouth, and overall Bulk look is cool.:D

Yeah, keep it going like that! :)

I don't like the eye and the texture of the teeths should be dirtier, more detailed, but I think it's already pretty awesome! Keep it up, I'd love to see what you're doing with it :)

Are you using the Turtle renderer for this one?
Could you post a wireframe of the mesh you are rendering (pre-displacement)?

It's coming along really nicely :)

Great work.

Can't remember the original sculptors names (sorry!), but reminds me very heavily of this sculpt : -

Great work Dan,

my only critiques

skin is looking a bit hard / leathery (but perhaps that's the look your going for - u mentioned turtle, may be an idea to utilise the SSS)

the gums / teeth area looks like it may need a bit of work, epsecially on the tooth nearest us, it doesn't receded 'into' the gum, but rather joins it spoling the realism factor in that area (teeth work great with the SSS too! :) )

eyeball lacks any realism, try adding a tearline, a shadow falloff from the upper eyelid (via an alpha works brilliantly, and even gets rid of that 'surprised' look (even on eyes half closed)) - I'd try faking the iris more with some added depth.

This is a tut I wrote some time ago, some principles still stand, but today I would fake the depth even more, but you may or may not find it usefel

Eyeball Tutorial (http://users.tinyworld.co.uk/steven_tubbrit/Workshop/Nurbs/Eye/Photorealistic_Eye_01.htm)

looking forward to the updates, you planning a whole body ?

Stringer -

Thanks for the suggestions. The Eyeball and mouth/teeth are what I am working on improving at the moment. The eye is mostly just a stand in right now. I'm creating an accurate eye and going to render it with an HDRI image so it should look pretty cool.

I am using SSS in Turtle and I have many layers that have went into this image even though it might be a slight effect. SSS is way over used ( imo )and most of the time it looks too waxy - you can see this in the gums and mouth - I prefer it to look more leathery.

I doubt I'll add a body anytime soon.

Thanks for the link!

You have really worked on the Textures.:tu: Overall 5 stars very Good

Good job! I like the texturing and coloring!

He does look like the sort to slobber a bit so a bit o moisture in the gums area would probably be a plus maybe even some of those white crust marks one gets when one drools all night long hahahaha.

anyways keep up the good work.....I vote for a body to got with the head!

Here is an update -

I remade some zbrush displacement maps and reworked some textures. I tend to slap a bunch of stuff together so that I can define a direction. But as you can see these new images are much different from the orginals -

Finally got some time to finish this project - here are some renders from the animation. I still have some little things that I'd like to fix but I have another project I want to get going on...

By the way - if anyone knows how to host animation files similar to the way images are hosted - I could put that up. Thanks.

Really nice Dan!
Huge improvement from the beginning. Love what you've done with his skin.
How long are your renders taking?
Can't wait to see the animation.

~Mike D.

Dan B

The renders aren't taking too long - about two or three minutes a frame - but I have them all in separate passes that I composite together in Fusion. I didn't render enough passes on this one for ultimate control, so I just used what I had and called it a done. ;)
