This project is starting to defeat me so I thought I'd post what I have now and put it away for a bit. Poor Gus's head needs totally reworked since it doesn't look like Gus at all and all the missing parts still need to be added. :D This is from a piece of sheet music dating to the late 1800's. A copy of the part of the original I was trying to duplicate is below my rendering. :D

And the original:

I've been working on my largest size canvas yet, 1500x1500 and it really is a booger. Time to do something else for a few days.

I've been flipping back forth between them and I think you came darn close in it. I think coverting it to gray scale might help you see it better.. Looks great Vikki.

Keep going...you are almost there.
Love the flags and the flag poles. :tu:

Wow, you are not far off the mark at all. Just a few tweaks here & there and you'll have it. The flags really are great!
Sometimes getting away from something for awhile does help get a different perspective when you go back to it.

I'm in total awe.
The figure is very close. The clothing is slightly different, but the head is almost right on. The only real difference I can pick out is that your's has a slightly broader chin and a little less shading in the eye area.
I can't wait to see your update on this one :tu:

Thanks for the comments and encouragement. :D

Here's the update. Not sure I'm quite done with it yet, but I'm sure I'm done with it for now. :D I am much happier with the model now.

You are doing very well Vikki. As mentioned before do not rush it. Take your time and you will be satisfied in the end.

I agree with everything the others have said. The latest version is a BIG step forward from the one at the top of the thread - the face is MUCH closer now. I think you've done an excellent job with this. :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:

Hey Thanks for all the comments! :D

After sleeping on this latest update I've decided that I am going to put it away for now but will complete it at a later date. including the character font in Gus' name. If you look closely you'll see little characters in the capital letters G(us) and W(illiams) in the original. Still need to complete the harp which has a ways to go yet. :D

Juandel, Everytime I add more shadow in the larger version he looks blackeyed. :D I'm still struggling to find the balance in shading in those bags as you noticed. They are also quite more pronounced in the original and I's struggling for that effect too. I'll work on those things at a later date. I need to do something terrifically fun and not quite so technical right now for a break. :D

Thanks again for the comments!
