I plan to paint this drawing

http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200405/user_image-1084141504seb.jpg

At first I thought to do it in PS or Painter, but I think this can be done in ZB too;
But I don't see how to do that, I should have a layer organisation like in PS .

So far I create a plan use my bitmap as a texture and have the first problem, how to keep proportion of my bitmap once it is mapped on my plan
next, if I add layers on top to paint I must add another plan to receive my painting, but how to set it transparent while still seing the paint I must add?;... I read about this once but can't find where?

Any advices or tips and tricks of the organisation of the workflow are welcome

3D PlaneTool>Modifiers>Initialize menu H-horizontal and V-vertical settings should be in proportion with your original image/texture.
For example a texture of 640x480 should have a horizontal setting of 100% and a vertical setting of 75%. 480/640 x 100.

Transparency on layers (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=003703) - taken from the quicklinks section.

Some time ago now Aurick posted a script entitled simulating photoshop layers. Post a request to Aurick for the url of that script. I was unable to find it.

The basic priciple of Aurick's technique is to create a "cheat layer" i.e a transparent layer using the 3d plane tool. Draw the 3DPlane tool on it's own layer > set it's z depth via the Picker or via the Transform pallete > size it so it fills the canvas > select the Gel Shader material>settings=
transparency100
Gel shading =0
specularity =54
diffusion=15
Go to the Render pallette and unpress FlattenLayers. Now the layer will render transparent showing pixols on the layers beneath. Create a new layer and begin your painting on that.The brush will now take it's zdepth from the transparent layer beneath it if it's picker mode is set to contZ and the layer picker mode is set to all.

You could also create a document the same size as the drawing, load the drawing as a texture, and use fill layer to use it as a background to paint over.

then paint away and use the grabber tool to save the new texture so you may stop and start as you please.

here is an example using your pic....

the red line shows if you use a low rgb level you can do your underpainting while still having full view of scene below....probably would be best to use single layer brush for this

The yellow line shows a material painted with a higher rgb level than in pic but with transparency.

The green lineshows how you can move the pic around to paint if needed.

I don't know how to help you with layers. There is a zscript called ZSketcher 1.2 that works with Z2. Reading the two helps posted thought it would be cool if the two could be added to the ZSketcher 1.2 zscript. That is be able to type in the pixols of the image and have the ZSketcher create the Plane3d AND have a type in create doc (that way most of what is needed to start would be in the Zscript pannel/box area) but hey I am a newbie and it might not be possible to do so.

may be this link (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=012108) gets you started ... the layer question is addressed as well as many useful tips ... i initiated the thread to learn to paint ;)

Hi Junk
Pencilcase (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=012115) as said Space above !(page 3 last version)
I don't know if that's work with Zb2
It's a very practical tool !
As It's a script, all function can also be found in the prog too :)
Have fun painting in Zbrushland :)

thanks all for your repply, i did tests ans read a lot of thread on the forum

Well it doesn't seem to be doable simply
I found the script of aurick about PS layer emulation, but this only work with one layer at a time.

Well perhaps it(s not the good tool to do real-like painting

Try the "SmudgeBrush" tool :)
You can paint with it with a color on press "CTRL" !
No need layers :)
:ex: Just fill before the Background with a color different than Pure black(0,0,0,)!!!
Here you find the method :) (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=012108&p=10)
It's like painting :)
Just play with the Size of brush!

So for you the workflow is :
Import your "line" rough
And put color painting with the smudgeBrush, and smudge it :)
Have happy painting!

Another exemple + method

you can do very fine real-like paintings in zbrush ... you only may not expect have layers with same function as photoshop... but when you say real-like, well in real media you only have one canvas, and no layers, and you can paint ... ;)

you can make multiple layers in zbrush too, by turn of layers-mode in renderpalette and use a basic material which hig transparency on all... its not smae as photoshop layers, as you have influence of material too. i would recommend, do the two layers way as aurick showed, or is in my thread, use one for your scetch, the other for colorize. this works wonderful. just try, you will see... :)

and
an example of real-painting in zbrush (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=012994) ;)
