View Full Version : My first WIP
Well, I've been using Zbrush for exactly 2 weeks now and i thought I would share a sample of my first modeling attempt.
It is a full figure done In zbrush with some tweaking in Wings 3d and Blender
I have to say this program has made modeling a breeze.

Absolutely beautiful.
Reminds me of the Heavy Metal and Epic magazines of the 60s and 70s - very cool. The closest would be 'Cholly and Flytrap'.
I for one would love to see your construction work up to this point. It should prove educational for everyone.

'Cholly and Flytrap' indeed. I still have those "Epic" and Heavy Metal" Issues somewhere.
:tu: :tu: :tu: Great modeling!
..is that all one Mesh? Or did you model the Gogles seperate?
Thanks!

Darn tootin Sardicus! That is the stuff, got a few out as soon as I saw this post - aahhhhhh, the good stuff. Actually I have every one posted on that link! Don't see that anymore. Well, possibly in this thread a character may develop. :)) For all those who interested and yet far too young I do encourage you to explore the past.
So lets keep things alive Fist.*Show us what ya got!
Thanks for the comments guys.
The initial head was done in Zbrush, The goggles were done in wings 3d, then I put the pieces together in Blender.
Then i took it all back in to zbrush for refinement.
It was quite the process of discovery to find out which programs were best at which particular aspect of modeling.
My only problem is that I need a lower rez version of the head and along the way it was deleted.... grrrrrr
Does anyone know of a way to reverse engineer it to get back to a simpler version?

Hey Fist, as for a simpler version. I assume you lost all your construction history???? Did you by chance save your script in Zbrush, it is always a good idea to have it recording just in case. A great tool I use in the studio to save jobs regularly with the modelers and texture wizards. It can also then be used for tuts.
Zbrush has tools for decreasing polys, have you tried those?
I would also recommend emailing Aurick directly (list moderator), he and the staff may have a save up their collective sleeves.
On another note: Silo - download the trial version (17days) and then find the beta for the latest version. You can then explore the Topolgy brush, which will allow you to draw the detail you want right on your hi-res model. Like painting a hand held model. It is a beta, it is buggy, go in stages, save often, but it might save you. It promises to be very useful for reverse engineering and cleanup. THE PROBLEM - you will have to redetail the model you get to take advanteg of Zbrush's capabilities. Ouch!
Mandatory RULE - save often, save copies, save versions - only when a project is finalized do you cleanup. :))

well...as always ya should save your models...but if you saved you model as a ztool and upped the divisions etc.....and saved again later at a high subd...no worries...your ztool will still have all the subd's saved...(future info....no matter how high you subd....save at lowest.....much smaller file and no loss of info!!) ....so you can reload that tool and go to the lowest subd level you need to to get to the low poly count you are looking for.
If you did not save it as a ztool though.....then your only hope would be that you saved your original mesh...altered in zbrush under a different name.obj
otherwise....you gotta travel that road again I think.
cool model by the way....and you're still a tease;) hehe.....looking forward to being able to see the rest of this guy!

I own Silo for my Buisness and my Home...
Wings has far more features, PLus UV mapping.
And you dont have to pay to beta test it :)

Well Ive finished the first 2 characters with z brush, wow what an amazing program.
Unfortunately I cant post images of them just yet (maybe soon).
I only have one problem now, they are soooooo huge poly wise and because I had to use other programs they have tri polys in it and zbrush wont let me reduce the polys.
hrmph!
Hmm maybe Silos topo brush can help.
Has anyone had any experience with it?

There is a tutorial on the never center website about the topography brush.
you can use Zbrush to reduce the polys also with the optimise slider (think only some tools support this)

I believe aurick posted a way to optimize it a little bit ago and it might have had something to do with keeping the highest subd and deleting the lowers and using the cage option to have zbrush recreate the lower.....am not sure if this was the actual solution or how much detail gets killed doing that....but it doesn't hurt to experiment and see what the outcome is hahaa....unless time is a problem.
Or you could just use displacements I guess.
oh yeah....when you export your model.....don't just hit the button.....go to tools>export (it's at the bottom) and make sure quad is turned on! and any other option you deem necessary and then hit the export button. That may have the results you need.
I'll give these suggestions a try
Thanks Guys
Chris
