Z2 - Modeling Help - Feathers

I'm trying to model a bird with Z-Spheres and running into trouble when it comes to the feathers. What would be the best strategy for modeling them:
1. Use multiple Z-Spheres, one for each feather?
2. Use Z-Sphere's to model out the masses and then clean them up later in the modeling process?
3. ????

Good question. This is just for a still image right now. But I would like it to be a full 3D model (as opposed to just the body with feathers painted on afterwords).

there is a alpha in one of thease packages called scales...
could be used to sculpt feathers.... useing projectionmaster...
