A little over 2 hours in wings3D....
Going to finish this later. Want to start a new one. This was my first attempt at a robot mecha thingy so it sucks in detail and form but I see alot of little details and ideas I would like to work on. Amazing Robos guys!

Hi Ze
For me the white is too contrasted!
It's a wip, i am quasi sure that Mtb Change that for the finished work ;)

It just my impression, but the rendering prog don't make generaly not such separated colors :)
In any case impressive picture

Hi MtB
You said No but you refine your rendering as I seen for smoothing reflects colors on your model :)
White has now some blue inside :)
Cool model indeed

I have said "generaly" not "never" :)

Personally Mike, I think the clean forms, and, (at least at this stage), lack of excessive detail are VERY effective...
It makes it look vey much like the product of a high-level technology, which I sense was your aim. Further detailing, if restrained, and carefully considered, such as small digital read-out panels, and some carefully placed indication of panel fasteners, equally high-tech, will take this baby out of the shop, and onto a high-gravity methane-based atmosphere planetary body, with rediculous ease... ;)
Very nice, and clean piece...
:tu: :tu: :tu:
Just curious, but why do you model in wings when you have C4d?

Huh amazing piece of work!

01-24-04, 10:33 PM
@Matuka: exactly THAT is the reason (without trying to answer for MtB who is quite capable of doing this - and more :D )!!
No, serious: Wings is nothing but a modeller while C4D is one step from making your coffee, too. Wings ist just easy and fun to work with.
Blame it on the different timezone - our day starts while you "over there" are still snoring ;) !

Thanks guys.
I like modeling in wings becuase I really like its approach. Its easy to work with in my world.
Just like some people to prefer either starting or ending their work with ZBRush..its just right in their world.

The hardest part - for me - is to place some bones into any model. I always end up with a tangle of bones, pointing in all directions, VERY impressive :D but good for nothing. If there only would be a modeller that could do this job REALLY easy!!

Wonderfull work MTB! A truely hi-tech mech.
Waiting eagerly for updates!

Wonderful work...
I'm learning 3D wings...
Thank for share.

Yes I can understand that mtb. I'm amazed at how efficient the workflow is in dedicated modelers like wings and silo. I have never used C4d but I know there is a free version 5 or 6 i think. I did see some vid tuts using mesh surgery which blew my mind. Very nice toolset and it left me thinking that the base C4D modeler might be pretty efficient. The hypernurbs are an interesting approach to subd from what I have read. Anyway I enjoy watching your poly work.
PS. Do you know Matuka is a name from a source in El Paso? Hint perhaps you heard it when you took your girlfriend out for a date.
Mahlikus The Black
01-26-04, 12:46 PM
Really?!
Not familiar with the name.
As for the free Cinema version. Thats 6.
As for mesh surgery...awesome tools set but you need 100+ dollars and version 8. :(
Oh well.
Thanks for the comments.
Peace.
Have you ever taken your girlfriend to see Viva El Paso?
Mahlikus The Black
01-26-04, 04:37 PM
No. My wife and I have never gone...and not only has the latest show been changed from the original..it is also the last show... :(
Sorry.
Ahh yes I have heard of the financial troubles and misdoings of the management. Many many years ago I was an actor as well as a technician there. Matuka was the name of an indian character that fought against spain etc. Oh well I'll drink to it's ending. It's too bad the two guys who caused all the problems are probably going to get away with it. Stories of greed never seem to have happy endings.
Anyway you might want to catch it before it's gone. If you do go, take notice of the stone walls all around the place. The stonemason was a master and he had hidden all kinds of neat designs into the walls.

A material test before I finish the model. Thought you all would like to see. I wanted to simulate a silver flake under a pearlescent layer. Kinda merging a vintage and modern paint coat Looks like an old cadillac of robos..lol.

total success! also, its very pleasing to the eye to see a bot without scratches, rust, intestine gears hanging out or even worse for the first time in ages - must be right off the conveyor belt :D
bravissimo, MtB!

Hi MtB
Just a little precision :)
The red "eyes" are facettes with a "material" or they are separate objects ?
In resume the robot is "one" 3D object or many ?
From the first wings image seems one "one" but...I am waiting your answer :)
(with febrility :D )
Thx by advance!
Pilou
Mahlikus The Black

The wings model is in three pieces. The head unit. The body unit, and the back fins. When exported, the material seperate to objects in C4D so there are seperate objects for each materil group.

Thx
I shall go to sleep quietly now :D

Ps If you see something wrong in my "maxim"
on the signature don't hesitate !
Google gives me that "Is beautiful what likes without concept"
Subtilities of this language is not my cup of thea
Pss So if I good understand the "red eyes" are facets with a special red material ?

Hi, kind of late but I just now saw this post (I don't often get into the Community Forum) Great Model & texturing! Can I pick your brains?? I have just discovered wings and am fooling around with it but so far I have found that the obj format won't import into Zbrush, keep getting error messages. And if I render a model in Wings, I can't save the render or export it anywhere. If you have any suggestions I would be greatful! Thanks!
Mahlikus The Black
02-19-04, 08:05 PM
File will not import due to N-gon. ZBrush doesnt like polys with more than 4 sides. You can, in wings, go to one of the menus (can't remember right now) and select faces with 5 or more sides to help identify them. As fr the render, you can select the box next to the words openGL and click the dot next to render to file. Easy peasy.
BTW- ANOTHER color tweak..just fooling around.

Thank you, and btw I really really like the texture finish you put on the last image. Are you importing textures to apply? If so what format do you use?
Thanks again.

Straight custom Materials/Shaders. No texturing at all. :tu:

Can i make a silly question?
Does wings work with nurbs too? or have u worked in some parts with hexagons? (adding more vertex in a single quad poly)
scuse me if im being dumb :o
Of course ;) your work is terrific MTB!!!!!!!

Wings3D is an SDS (Sub-Division Surface) modeler. This is sort of a sub-set of polygonal modeling.

Hi MtB
Just for information
How many times for one final renderer of a "robot head" in C4D?
5,15,20 .... minutes ?
Pilou
Mahlikus The Black
03-02-04, 07:58 AM
nAÄAx - Thank you. Yeah, Dan got it. Its a Sub-D modeler, also known as box modeling.
I can understand how it may look deceiving with a wire shot like this (which has a little addition to the modeling)
http://prymevalgraphics.com/Wings3D-Stuff/Robo%20Torso-2.jpg
Most nurb programs display their mesh like this. With a closer look though, you can see its the actual mesh subdivided once with a smooth tag as well. It does look like isoparms though. Thought I would clear up the look of the wireshots.
Frenchy - It depends on alot of factors: how many nurb subdivisions I have the final render set to, how, many shadow maps I have and @ what size, how big I am rendering the image, how many reflection and shadow depth rays I have it set to, the AA levels. But, as an example, on my machine, it take about 35 to 45 minutes to render a 1280x1024 image with 2 shadow maps @ 500x500, aa set to best @ 1x1 min to 4x4 max, the nurb sub-d set to 4, ray depth @ 6 with a shadow depth @ 5, and levels of detail and accuracy set to 90%. This is for a high quality render. I could make a medium quality render that would take half the time.
Hope that helps..lol. ;)
Okay, a little treat...I hope.
Here is an animation of the robo. Just a rotation but its fully rendered.
Enjoy!

Hi Mtb
Cool animation !
But carreful, it's so polish than a burglar can see all your home on the robot :D
Thx for the elements of times that fix some things :)
Have good modeling for the other half part robot!

Hover unit.
OK MTB, I've got to say something. I've been trying to hold back any comments until I saw the final. I've been following this thread since the begining.
This is outstanding work! BEAUTIFUL! I love it when I see someone tweak something to perfection. That's my style too ;)
My two cents: Use the greenish color with that pearlescent specular. That was my favorite color. I thought it mingled VERY well with those awesome eyes.
I think we need to help you pick a final color, what do you think? It seem's you may be having a hard time picking one. How many coats does he have now??
Mahlikus The Black
03-03-04, 10:56 AM
332 but with your Pearlescent Teal its 333 now..lol.
I will write up some detailed info about this Bot to explain. See, with the right budget, it can go from a utility bot to palace guard to police bot.
See the rounded extrusion on the shoulder? Those are actually covers to a docking area on the shoulder. This can be used to attach various accessories like search lights, cannons, links for towing..all kinds of stuff.
See the thin gray slab on the shoulder? This is one place where in can undock for additional accessories. The screws on the upper arm are for arm model changes. For example, the cop bot will have a service and utility arm where the shoulder dock is. It will be very thin and folds open and out. Arm change can be a weapon hand combo unit or straight artillery and don't forget a light siren combo on the shoulders.
It is so shiny due to a revolution in amorphous liquid metal components bringing birth to LM78 or HD Vitreloy. It is formed like the antique process of plastic injection molding and comes off the press ready to assemble. Due to the properties of amorphous metals, HDV hardens to a flawless shine and already sharp (if need be). It is virtually indestructible due to the atomic makeup and lack of molecular crystallization which causes structural instability in standard metals.
Yes, I do have a life.
Its thin, light, and very inexpensive. This is just a small bit of this bad boy. As you can see I have ALOT of modeling to do still. Taking a break to come up with a history and purpose for something that started out as a mere doodle was really fun.
333? Well then. He used to be thin, light, and inexpensive! :)
You've really got it together MTB. I was looking at that sweet animation of it, and it took me back to some of the bots used in Star War Ep. 1 & 2. This is going to make an awesome piece in your portfolio, for sure! Are you planning on doing a full scale animation on it? That would be too cool, seeing those arms move around while it's hovering down a city street.
QUOTE: "As you can see I have ALOT of modeling to do still."
Well, I do see that. Plus I also see that you did this, along with thousands of revisions in a little over a month. You'll have it done in no time at all, I'm sure.
BTW - I like the new antenna on the most recent model. The others looked so old-fassioned. The new one looks like a cellphone antenna. Very nice.
Highest praise on this one, MTB.
