I'm having some trouble getting a smooth alpha selection cutout on a sphere. My alpha selection is here

When I apply it to the sphere all looks well

But when I Hide the unselected points it is very jaggedy

I've tried both increasing the resolution of the sphere and increasing the resolution of the alpha mesh, but neither seems to help the problem. Can anyone provide me any helpful hints on how to minimize the jaggies for what I'm trying to do?

Thanks,

your alpha has anitalias on the edges of the F... try turning the anti-alias off in your text tool or if you are cuting and pasteing, try turning off antialias from the selection tool...

also try increasing your alpha size....

you might want to try makeing the F with perfect Verticle and horizontal lines this way no matter what you should get a clean line...

hope this helps :)

I was getting the same result with antialiasing off on the alpha. I'll try using a really high res alpha to see if that will make any difference.

Well, after creating an alpha using the maximum font size I could (something over 1600pt), and using the maximum size ZBrush canvas, I was able to get a render that looks rather well when downsized to the size I want.

Thanks Rhom, I wanted to try some unique lettering, and I thought I might be able to do something cool in ZBrush. I always like finding new ways to use good tools. :)

the reason you are getting the funky edges is because you are trying to mask an area that is not perfectly lined up with the underlying geometry. The mask will only pick up the nearest polygons, not split them up to better match your mask.

while this doesn't solve your problem, and you already did a fine job at a work-around, at least you know why now.

Try it times with a texture. Use black as background and white for the letters without antialias. Then activate transparency in the texture panel.
