Thought I would try modeling a head from a default ZCube after reading LeDiscot's suggestion. It worked out, but I smoothed it a few times to round it out a bit.

The bulk of the modeling session was captured in Zscript form, and I offer it up here:

Old_lady.txt (http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_file-1032452681mdb.txt)

As mentioned, I started with a cube, smoothed and then Optimized it once. this is another example of starting with a low poly form and building detail locally where needed. As much as possible, I try to work with the configuration of the polygons. That's why I left the poles of the cube at the mouth of the character.

I didn't concentrate on the back of the head because I knew it would be hidden.

This script will only work in v1.5. Let me know if there are problems.

Enjoy!

Ken,

Your script ran sweet in Win XP with ZB 1.51 upto the point where I delved into my CD collection, loaded Janacek,s Jenufa into the drawer, sat back in anticipation of the texture and lighting finale when your script encountered a 'power cut' LOL
Please Please Please post part 2.

Thanks again for sharing and the inspiration.

I must say I am really impressed, the skin texture is amazing and I can't see by looking at it how you did it using a cube???

So I am going to download the script, thanks for letting us see how you managed this wonderful creation!!!!!

Ken:

Very nice work. Did you use the "Spherize" command on the cube to start with? That seems to produce a nice sphere made entirely of quadrangles and no poles to deal with.

Another superb model, Ken, full of character. I love the textures, not only of the skin, but also the material of the shawl. And thanks for the script. :tu: :tu: :tu:

As far as I Know, the spherize command doesn't get rid of poles on default Z objects. If you made an adaptive or unified skin of zspheres or objects then there are no poles.

Ken:

Sorry about that misinformation, I don't know what I was thinking - too many hours at my Z Station. Anyway, here is what I was really trying to say in ZScript form. It creates a generic quad head (low poly).

Thanks for your patience,

Ken, amazing as ever.

Bruce, that is a great little tip, thanks. You might find the info on pages 35 and 36 of the ZAcademy Compilation (http://www.cyber-webs.com/zbrush/Upham/ZAcadCompCol.zip) interesting. Pix describes writing a basic obj file for importing a cube, then modifying it to get a workable object for modeling. With the new options in 1.5 though, your steps are easier...

Shade:

To make the polygons show on the "cube", open the "Preferences" menu and select "Dots" and deselect "Grpc". Or, alternately, select the "Quick Edit" mode and "pf" in the same menu, then you will see the polygons that make up the "cube".

Hey!

Where did you get a picture of my Grandma from? :D

As always Ken, beautiful (not to mention awsome) work from you, this is one of your best, so much realism here!
