It's been a long time since I've posted anything -- partly because of a lack of inspiration due to recent events, and partly because I've been working on some new techniques. Anyway, here are the results: no post-render work, other than a bit of sharpening in Photoshop.

By the way, the butterfly species represented here are the Emerald swallowtail (Papilio polytes) and the Pipevine swallowtail (Battus philenor).

aurik, this one is simply sweet. After having worked all night (7:00 to 7:00) seeing this was just the thing for me.
Very beautifully done.

fantastico, aurick... more than that! it rocks, is beautiful, a masterpiece and was well worth the long waiting for your next painting.... and thank you southern for this curriculum and warning... though it comes too late as far as i’m concerned!

A bird's eye view of butterflies. The shadows are great and so is the composition. The chaotic beauty of nature. This is a very "framable" image :tu:

aurick, just one small comment, if I still may; I usually like to see brightly coloured borders, and think this image would be done justice having a solid bright orange one. just my hunch (plus I quick edited it in photoshop ;) )

Well, I'm not sure. But I'll take your word for it. :)

Thank you, everyone, for the very positive feedback. As I said, much of this was experimental. I'm glad that you like the way that it turned out as much as I do!

Fascinating and beautiful image Aurick! :)
Those highlights and shadows on the eaves are great..as are the leaves themselves. Those butterflys are awsome! Wonderful use of color and modeling. Overall a well executed and inpiring picture, as Southern's pic shows. :)

Wow Matthew,

Both of these butterfly images are spectacular. Hard to say which is my fav, this one has the soft background of convincing grass letting me know how high in the tree I am - the second has even greater depth with the landscape and stormy sky (I always struggle painting clouds ;( ) In either image I can imagine touching the butterfly wings and finding their iridescent powder on my fingers then feeling sad that I touched them at all.

Too tough to decide – excellent work!
