View Full Version : Golden Boxes

An exercise involving perspective, modeling techniques, materials settings, render settings, and cloud making techniques that I picked up here on the forum :)
Zoid, that is REALLY cool! I love transparent shiny stuff :D I would really love to know how you did it.

Truly great, Josh!
That shade in the translucent flowing deallies looks like the finest South American Aquamarine! Well done!

excellent, Zoid! what a brilliant use and combination of techniques!!! :tu: :tu: :tu: and so on to no end. love those striking colours and gorgeous shapes and materials. the sky is superb.
my question: are those wonderful boxes made of planes or did you somehow manage to take a side off some cubes?

EXCELLENT zoid (forgive my shouting)
and here's a technique to take the side off a cube for my friend hansl;
1.mask whole cube
2.with a square alpha brush, with "move" active in the transform panel and with ctrl+alt pressed, drag over the side of the cube you wish to cut out.
3.in the tool->modifiers->selection tab, click; *hidepts*
done.
here's the very hasty zscript;

thank you, Christos, for your tip and script but sillyme, i am obviously too dumb to do it (to the perfection Zoid achieved)... the unmasking keeps showing on both (opposite) sides of the cube and when i try to remask one of the sides, the other one usually gets partially masked, too. even if i succeed in having just one plane of the cube masked, a kind of frame/border is still visible when i hit hidepoints. during my attempts i tried the following: cubes with sh and sv off, higher meshes, decreasing z-intensity to zero and a few other things, all to no avail. running your script left me , too as at the end i again had a full cube as a result (and in between some sights i knew from my own attempts - like the bordered opening). hmmm. sometimes methinks i am just too blind/stupid to see something mucho obvious. mayhaps you can help me out once more?
TIA

Thanks for the comments everyone.
Stacey, This is the ReflectionGel material. There is a texture map which appears as a pattern in the material. This is the default texture, but you can change and add any texture you like in the S1 section of the material modifiers panel.
Stonecutter, I thought Aquamarine was bluish, but you certainly are the gem expert here. I once got to handle a large piece of bi-colored tourmaline and it also looked a lot like this.
Juandel, I could have saved you much trouble if I had included an explanation to begin with. I'm sorry to leave you hanging and Thank you so much to Cneofotistos for jumping in so quickly with an explanation. The results you get when slicing a side off a cube depend on which side you choose to remove. Hopefully this EmptyCube.txt (http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_file-1007330060tzv.txt) script will explain more. It should show the cube in dots mode so you can see that the mesh isn't just a simple grid. The first two slices I make are deliberate mistakes so you can see the problems that you can encounter. I hope this makes sense for you :)

HEY ZOID! Lovely image, again! :tu: :tu: :tu:
As an info, Aquamarine in it's natural state is an incredible sea-green...In it's infinite wisdom, (And yes, that was vitriolic sarcasm, because I love the real shade), the jewelery industry decided people needed the cheesy blue, so the material is heat-treated to change the color...
I've facetted some incredible aquamarines with my own cut designs, and I can tell you, it's like holding a piece of deep sea mixed with fire in your hands.
Thanks for sharing this.!
cneofotistos thanks for the ZScript which you hate to do. Much appreciated.

Very cool sky and perspectives Zoid !
Reminds me of Escher in color.

Great job Zoid! :tu: :tu:
I don't have much to add, other than this is very pleasant to look at. The colors, shapes and composition ... very fluid.

Hey Zoid,
This is a very relaxing image, excellent sense of depth :tu:

A strange occurance on the way home tonight. Riding in the train I happened to look up and see a neon sign in the distance. It said "ZOID". I fumbled for my digital camera and snapped this image, but I reacted too slowly and only got the "OID"
http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1007611860tjo.jpg
I'm just kidding. The only thing real about this story is the train, that's where I created it on my laptop. I imported the DXF letters from Carrara into ZBrush and then sliced the ends off using the method described for the box image. I bent the neon lights out of 3D rings and used the glow material tinted green. I added a zoom blur in photoshop to give the sense of motion. I've always been fascinated by signs and I did these exercises in preparation for doing more complex images. Thanks to everyone for your comments about my image :)
That's an image which makes Jola happy.
Would like to have such a box in reality!
:p
Wow! This is a fantastic composition!

That's really nice. You actually had me fooled for a second when you said it was a digital photograph at first. I was also wondering what kind of company which was named "ZOID" would be. :)
The neon effect is really well done.
I'm dying to get a laptop someday, so I can make ZBrush portable. :) Or a PC Tablet would be even cooler.
