Scanner problems

Can anyone enlighten me on a problem that I have with my scanner? Every so often, when I switch on the computer, before I get to the desktop screen, a dialogue box comes up telling me that new hardware has been detected and I should put in the software disc. Up until yesterday, I tended to just do this, presuming that I had the most stupid computer going that somehow managed to lose the scanner software at random intervals. Yesterday, I had to uninstall and re-install six times before I could get the scanner properly recognised. If anybody has a solution to this problem I would be most grateful, as I find the scanner extremely useful for scanning in textures for use in ZBrush.
