We weren't done! Pixologic is pleased to announce the upcoming release of ZBrush 4R3.
This update includes new features and expands the features introduced in previous versions.

Enhancements Include:

FiberMesh™. Significant advancements to the FiberMesh™ settings provide you with greater control and flexibility. Curve modifiers have now been added to a number of FiberMesh™ settings including: Length, Coverage, Gravity and Color Profile. Revolve has also been added as a new setting. Textures applied to FiberMesh™ and MicroMesh objects can now be transparent (true black pixels will be hidden), allowing even greater diversity in their use. FiberMesh™ settings can now be saved and loaded as needed it. In addition, various FiberMesh™ presets will ship with ZBrush 4R3. These presets can be pre-viewed in Lightbox, as well as modified and shared amongst ZBrush artists. Once you have styled your FiberMesh™ to perfection, export the fiber guides to other applications for further use. Moreover, fibers can also be exported as unique vector displacement maps to be rendered in external applications.

296013

Vector Displacement Maps. ZBrush 4R3 will export both 16-bit and 32-bit Vector Displacement maps, providing you with a powerful and easy way to export your sculpted details to other programs for rendering. Take full advantage of the capabilities inside rendering engines by using maps to displace the surface in any direction, including undercuts.

295999

BPR to Geo. You can now convert your MicroMesh and FiberMesh™ renders into actual geometry with a single click. The resulting geometry can be further edited. With the additions of the dot preview and Spin Edge features, control the direction of any MicroMesh before rendering or converting into geometry for future edits.

296000

NoiseMaker. We are pleased to be releasing the NoiseMaker plugin. This powerful enhancement to ZBrush 4R3 allows you to create a wide variety of noise and patterns. With over 25 parametric generators, limitless combinations, and the ability to work in both 3d and UV mode, NoiseMaker is sure to help get the job done. NoiseMaker, will now use interpolated masking per polygon for an accurate display of noise and patterns even on lower polygon meshes. Furthermore, NoiseMaker features ZBrush navigation style, a larger preview window and new masking capabilities to provide multiple scaling options to your noise.

296001

296002

Interface Enhancements. Sub-palette sections will allow you to control the length of each sub-palette simply by collapsing or un-collapsing sub-sections. Show what you need, when you need it! Moreover, a new Magnify option allows you to zoom into portions of the canvas or interface. This is especially useful when recording videos or turntables.

296003

Render Enhancements. With the ability to cast shadows and silhouettes based on any Micromesh and FiberMesh™ (including fibers with a transparent texture applied), the ZBrush 4R3 BPR (best preview render) rendering system takes your final image a step further.

296004

Auto Updating. ZBrush 4R3 will include a new web-enabled update feature. Enjoy "click of a button" access to check if new updates or plugins are available from Pixologic. Never miss a new plugin or enhancement!

296016

ZBrush 4R3 will also include further enhancements and fixes for items reported and identified in ZBrush 4R2b.

We know everyone will enjoy this newest release, and all of the enhancements and features we've packed inside. We look forward to seeing the dynamic ways, each of you will make use of these new capabilities.

Happy ZBrushing:)

Question: Is the Auto Updating similar to other programs that release small updates and bug fixes, as opposed to waiting for a whole new update? That would be awesome!

For all the sexy feature enhancements, the new Auto-Update mechanism is the real star here. No more jumping through a different series of arcane hoops for each ZB release. Hopefully this will allow for more casual release of patches to fix important issues that don't warrant a major update.

Pixologic is on Fire!

No seriously, they are on fire. For the love of god, somebody put them out!

Love the enhancements about the curls and about renders, but the thing that I care most is some tuning on issues about the R2b...

A new release so quickly after the current one, sweet! what excites me the most is to finally see that vector displacement support has been added. This feature alone will play nicely now with Maxwell Render as it also supports vector displacements. :)

This is yet another one of those moments where I am happy to have purchased a license several years back. Very happy to see the Noisemaker plugin is finally arriving. I am also eagerly anticipating the release of Qremesher. Having third party support would be a first for this program I think, and I think it would be a healthy addition as well.

Indeed... ZB4 R2 was a quantum leap forward for me. I'd really love to have 64Bit support - but as it is I'm very pleased with the existing performance. Vector displacement alone would be a reason for the upgrade - the Spline and Mesh-Exporter ist the tripple icing on the cake this time. Love it already :)

Psionic
02-22-12, 04:06 AM
Awesome!! The Auto-updater will make the upgrade process far smoother for us (hopefully) and leave Pixologic with more time to develop and less time spent answering a billion support questions ;-)

Also hoping to hear 'some' news on Qremesher??

@Pixologic:

Thank you very much in advance for the update! :tu:

Especially the possibility to export Fiber Mesh Guides and Vector Displacement Maps sounds great.

Just as the NoiseMaker plugin and the "Convert BPR To Geo" feature. ;)

But also all the other features and improvements are highly appreciated.

And I hope we'll see the announced QRemesher soon!

That's something I'm really waiting for, especially as perfect addition to DynaMesh!
In fact I'm waiting for better retopology features since quite a while, cause the retopo workflow in ZBrush, as it is now, unfortunatly isn't very comfortable and pretty time consuming!

I don't know how 3D Coat and Mudbox handle this, but have you already tried Adjust Draw Size (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?91905-Adjust-Information-Installation-and-FAQ)?

Hey Pixologic, Thank you so much for the updates. I really liked what you guys have done. However, on the latest release 4r2b, there was a big problem with lag on your brush strokes. You don't have control of your strokes because it will suddenly increase the intensity by itself or it would completely paralyze the computer and then redraw the mesh on the canvas multiple times. I hope this was addressed and fixed with this new coming release. Once again, thank you for this great program, which I only want it to be always the best it can be.

Ah, AURFAX, glad you mentioned this. I thought it was just me (thought I was pressing a wrong button at the wrong time etc). It has happened several times, and I have had to close the doc, and restart the modeling process. Hopefully this new update will fix this. I think once they make ZBrush a 64bit compatible program (no more 4GIG limitation), lots of our 'lagging' and 'out of system memory' errors will go away.

hi phönix, you re right.
but the way 3d coat and mudbox have solved it is much more convenient
and gives a greater feeling working with itand imo its faster.

i dont know how the system behind it is called.
but it works like for example :

you press n hold the key b ----> an outlined circle appears in viewport, which presents the brush size.
while holding b you can pull the mouse up and down or left and right to increase
or decrease the circle/brush size.

by additionally clicking left or right mouse button you can change between altering the brush size,
the brush fall off and the strength. fast mode changing with a single klick.
its really fast and gives a good feeling while sculpting.

Thanks for this up and coming update, as I am very grateful indeed :-). Zbrush has got so many many functions now that I think the possibilities have by far exceeded my imagination and the boundaries have simply been crashed down by you guys. I am only now on a project that is making good use of the Dynamesh and wow is it making things straight forward, to the point where I have no idea how I would of coped with the time restraints before hand. Try holding down the space key. It will bring up the quick menu and the mouse location defaults to the brush size. Sounds just as quick and as similar to what you're describing.

The open bracket keys also now work for moving up and down draw size - this was a great addition.

Another update? ANOTHER UPDATE!!! Pixologic rules!!!:tu::tu::tu::tu::tu:
I was joking to my friends a few days ago that Pixologic should put Zbrush on Steam for auto update feature, and now Z4R3 gets auto update!
What's next? Achievements? :D

That is hilarious, and I wouldent even know what you were referring to if I wasn't trying to figure out how to get things into a game engine.
What I would love is GoZ right into TF2 so I could make modifications to the medic, in TF2 you have to be a guy and I think a nurse, especially one with loose medical ethics, nasty gloves, and a dirty needle is in order.

Thanks Pixo! Artists first, :-)

Here's something I found about QRemesher: http://www.cgchannel.com/2012/01/pixologic-ships-zbrush-4r2b/

Looks like the lines you layout are respected, allowing you more control over your topology (unlike 3D coat's retopo)

Hey Pixologic,

What's up with your support for floating licenses, both on the last release, 4r2b, and this new one?

Does this mean that the 4r2b floating lecense patch isn't coming out? And floating licenses will be functioning in the next release? Will we have to wait additional time after the next release for floating license versions?

I ask because I installed 4r2b at home a month ago, expecting the floating license patch to be out at the end of last month as scheduled. But alas, it's still not out. So in the meantime, I'm stuck working in version 4 so I can transfer work from home and work.

I was planning on reinstalling/reverting back to 4rb at home so I can transfer work back and forth. Should I do this, or wait until the next patch which will hopefully support floating licenses?

Not trying to be a pain here, as you guys are doing some kick ass work, but I'm kind of in limbo, and I'm missing out on all the cool new features!

Thanks.

It looks like they accomodated all our enhancement requests for fibermesh and micro mesh as well. Nice job! ;)

Any news yet however on the remesh plugin, price, features, availability? Also of some importance to me, does Pixologic get any money from the plugin purchases? (That would be a bigger incentive for me to purchase it, if I know it will benefit and help fund Pixo.

Money is a bit tight here with the economy n all, but if its in the $50 or under category, I'm sure I can swing it.

The floating license update will be made available very shortly following the release of 4R3. (See the last line of Pixolator's announcement. :))

Any questions concerning ZBrush should be posted in the Questions & Troubleshooting forum, please. Questions about accounts and serial numbers or the floating licenses should be asked via a Support Ticket (https://support.pixologic.com) so that you can be helped as expeditiously as possible.

May I say again -

THANK YOU SO MUCH, PIXOLOGIC, FOR MAKING YOUR UPGRADES FREE FOR CURRENT USERS!!!!!

In a time where bills are tight, and we're all struggling to do the things we really want to do with our lives, you allow the aspiring artist to not give up hope...

If we can just get Wacom to give us free "updates" every time they release a new Cintiq tablet.... THEN we would be in business. :D

Ha, but seriously, thank you very much for giving up a product that you could easily charge money for.
It says so much about your company.

Keep your pimp hands strong, Pixologic team.

Hi :)
wanted to know if Zbrush4r2b users have experienced the following in zbrush r2b:
1.while trying to rotate using transpose line from the centre circle ,the rotation kind of snaps.
Rotating using the corner circles works fine.

2.Also spot light keeps crashing after loading an image whether lowres or hires.
The same image when loaded in zbrush 4 works fine.

I had submitted a ticket at pixologic about it.I also got the following reply:

Hello Rishi

I have been able to duplicate the snapping that you encountered. I am looking into a solution for you with my team. When I get a resolution I will let you know through this ticket.

Thank you so much for using ZBrush and for all the support.

Sincerely,

Hello Zbrushers!

I have a question if someone would be so nice to help me :). I bought a new laptop ( Asus G74sx ) and it should be here before the release. I would like to know how I could install my Zbrush 4rb2 license on it. I know I have to deactive my current machine. But I know longer have the install file anymore just my serial from my purchase when I bought Zbrush 4rb1. If this is not the place for this I am sorry just trying to get some help... Thank you.

I agree with Beowulf. Working as we have (many many subtools) with out a photoshop-like folders system has become similar to driving a mack truck with out real brakes. Its the feature we have been wanting for years now. Folder based display. Folder based Decimate-All. Folder based Export all. Import into folders. Name and sort. Folder based deletion.

Exploding with anticipation here for the fiber to geometry function. When doing toy design sculpting for rapid-prototyping, fiber based hair or render based hair can't be used. But this... it sounds like a fun solution that might open up all kinds of avenues for hair treatment, scales, feathers, and armor.

Another amazing announcement. Maybe we'll see a video preview this weekend? I especially like the new auto update feature. I'm hopeful this means we'll see bug fixes become a more commonplace thing. NoiseMaker is looking really good and the BPR to Geo is an interesting idea too that I can't wait to see in action. If these point releases are this amazing, what's the major update to v5 going to be like when it arrives I wonder? Mind = boggled! ;)

I don't know how 3D Coat and Mudbox handle this, but have you already tried Adjust Draw Size (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?91905-Adjust-Information-Installation-and-FAQ)?
The way 3D Coat handles this is pretty smart. In fact you don't even need the keyboard for the basics and can adjust a lot with just one hand. Right clicking on the model and dragging left/right will decrease/increase brush size, while dragging up/down will increase/decrease strength. The brush cursor is also a visual indicator for size, strength, falloff, type (sculpting, smoothing, etc), opacity, and so on. It's easily the most efficient and speedy implementation I've seen to date and like the rest of 3D Coat's navigation is all user programmable too. Right clicking in ZBrush is currently being wasted on unneeded redundancy. I also like 3D Coat's default zoom/pan/rotate navigation too which also only requires one hand and is very natural. Still love my 3DX the most though.

polypaint to ptex, multichannel exr and 64bit version would make zbrush number 1.vec displacement was a nice surprise, well done!
Vector displacement caught me by surprise. I honestly didn't think we would see it any time soon, so you can imagine how big my grin is right now. I'm really looking forward to using QRemesher as well and I hope February is still the intended month of release. 64 bit is slated for ZBrush 5 so we'll still have to wait a while for that one, but we do know it's coming. It's really nice to see that Pixologic has noticed how often these particular features are being requested. They truly are one of the best in the business and I'm very hopefully Ptex support isn't too far off as well. Some UV mapping issues have been driving me crazy for the better part of a week now and Ptex would be the perfect solution. If only industry wide support were a tad better than it currently is. Patience I keep telling myself. It's well on it's way to becoming an industry standard, just need to wait a wee bit longer. :)

Harikon,

If you look in the root ZBrush folder, there should be a Documentation folder. In there you'll find ample amounts of specific information to get you going. Plus there is further educational tools at the main Pixologic website under the Education tab. They actually make it extremely easy to acquire all you need to start using the program right away! Also, there is a lot of support and tutorials in the ZBrushCentral community as well! Hope that helps.

Firstly, I'm disappointed with the version naming convention, Z4r3? Lame! We have v.R2b, If we had called this next version ZBrush4 R2c, then the next one R2d, we were only a bug fix release away from v.4 R2D2!!! Who wouldn***8217;t want that?

But seriously, I've Never really asked for any features before, but there's a few things id kill to have, but more in the way of extras than features. I wish there was an app or plug-in that could read Ztools and .zmt materials. I have a photoshop helper app called Brush pilot which allows me to see .abr files as images rather than loading all ten million of them into photoshop. .ztl files are the same, I have hundreds or more and can only see what they are (eg, which of the many TRex sculpts Ive done) by loading them which is time consuming, plus every time I open one I want to work on it! Sure, spotlight has fixed this to some extent, but I cant turn them around in spotlight and I keep iterations of a particular model in its own folder.
Also, am I the only one who cant get the 'undo' button to remain part of any custom UI?
'redo' stays quite happily, but 'undo' is either gone when I open the config, or disappears shortly after, drives me nuts as I am generally not a keyboard person. There are a few other buttons which have taken to doing this too, such as 'use symmetry'. and this has been the case since Z2, and on 5 different machines, both Mac & Windows. One more, as Im getting long-winded here, Since the first point release of Z4 I often either cant get palletes to move to the sides, or once I do they soon lose their scroll up/down function, so I have to close, say 'sub tools' to get to 'deformations', and I dont seem to be able to resize the window at all so it takes up my entire 27" screen. Anyone else?

Anyway, bitching aside, getting an email from Pixo announcing a new version is always exciting, I cant wait to see what amazing things have leaped from the mind of our dear Leader, its always a revelation. Long may Pixologic maintain its independence and innovative zeal, unfettered by the demands of corporate overlords or the stock market!

When is that scheduled for?
As I understand it, the sun is going to start to get a bit frightening in about five billion years give or take.
If that is the end of the world you are referring to I should think that ZBrush upgrades would be the least of your worries and you perhaps should look into Asbestos 2.0 or even EscapePod 1.2 and up (Escape Pod 1.1 and below will be historically buggy and fraught with problems such as a poor UI by then).

Wondering if we're going to get an Alpha version of QRemesher with the update...

Also, I hope that the edges we define will stay on the surface as we sculpt and that we can toggle them on and off--that way we can create new topology on the fly without having to redraw the edge structure every time, :-)

Gareee
02-27-12, 03:26 PM
Since qremesher is a commercial purchasable add on, I doubt we'll get any taste of it at all. I would expect though some kind of feature/price announcement soon though.

Odds are they needed to get this tweak out before the plugin could go through final testing.

We can gather what the plugin does from the pics on the developer's website, but quality of mesh layout, save of curves before remeshing is unknown, as is price.

The delay has made me look at topogun seriously... unless this new plugin is cheaper or more feature rich, odds are I'll either go with topogun or use blender for remeshing.

I had the opportunity to look at Topogun the other day, and I have to say that I was really impressed; it was like retopology using zspheres, but much easier, especially in just being able to see what on earth i was doing.

Having said that, the images I've seen from Verold make it look like an even easier way to retopo that Topogun. The price, ability, ease of use, etc are still unknown, but having used Topogun all it took was another look at the images from Verold to get me excited again. I'm really looking forward to the beta.

... and as an aside, my typing really does suck first thing in the morning, lol. I had to edit this post sooo much

Does anyone have R3 yet? I was half expecting an email in the inbox this morning (England) still nothing grrrrrrr...

As for retopo, I use 3D-Coat which I think is unbeatable at the moment for retopoing and has the Auto retopo feature which is an amazing tool for creating low poly animatable characters with no brain power required at all which I use all the time now. Plus you can get the Edu version for $99 which gets you everything you need to retopo, paint, model on pc, mac or linux. I was going to wait for Verold and QRemesher but that was a month or so ago and I can have the tools now I need to get animating. ZBrush and 3D-Coat make a very strong team!

Now after all that rambling... do I have an email?....... hmmmm

Pixologic are on the west coast of USA so it's still the middle of the night there. They have sometimes released updates right at the end of their day so could be tomorrow before you get an email

I very recently asked Pixologic on Twitter how R3 would be distributed amongst users and the reply was the upgrade would be available for all on the download center. Should still be today. So no need to wait for a personal invitation. When it's ready, it's ready for everyone. :D

Never heard about that. For me , it has been founded by Pixolator ( /bow ) and Jack Rimokh back in 1997 in L.A.
which demonstrate quite well what a talented and passionnated individual can offer to the worldwide cg community!

haha ! you were wrong about this, pixologic is always been based at USA and not at France ^^ they probably come at France for special event like "Japan Expo" for sharing the new zbrush 4 and some demonstration with artist. (which i did tested during that japan expo with their cintiq :D ) which it did happen some years ago.

by the way, i can't wait to get that new version :D

I'll second the vote for 3D Coat which I purchased at the beginning of the year. Retopo and UV's, two things I despise doing, are soooo easy in 3DC. I like the painting system as well. Voxels are fun too, particularly all the unique things you can do with them. Considering everything you get, it's hard to find better bang for your buck or a better combo when used beside ZBrush which is still my favorite. I try not to look at it from a versus perspective, but it will be very interesting to see how QRemesher compares.

How could I forget? It's my ringtone, the sound that plays when someone rings my doorbell, and I just say it constantly for the month before and after a patch comes out. I mean, these patches are like little slices of heaven come down to save us all!

Some folks enjoy giving credit where credit is due, and it certainly is due. Others enjoy kicking over sand castles. The stuff they've been releasing as free minor updates is the kind of stuff you'd be paying for once per year from other developers. Pixologic doesn't have to give us anything for free, yet they do. Even the most bitter skeptic has to be impressed on some level by the way they treat their customers. Anyways good luck with your Church of Zbrushology.

I absolutely agree that credit should be given, don't get me wrong. Plus, I like sand castles - I'd never kick them over :D I just disagree with the level of... well... sucking up, that always happens in these threads about updates. I'm excited for it too but sometimes people tend to go overboard.

I think respect is what's due. To Pixologic for doing what they do, including hosting this forum, and to your fellow ZBrush artists. A sense of entitlement is not becoming on anyone.

Gone though this song & dance many times. Pixologic is on the West Coast. It's now 7:11 pm. Still the 28th of February. No matter where you are, the update won't be late until after midnight, in a little less than 5 hours from now. Until then, nope, the announcement isn't "false" -- the last update happened around 11pm Pacific time, iirc.

Relax, it's gonna happen.
