As some of you may know,Since retireing, I am into jewelry design and manufacture. One of the usesI make of "z" was to try to show some of my pieces with stones of various types displayed. Over the weekend I experimented with the look of Opal, mainly because it exists in such a wide range of colors. this is one of my experiments. I thought I would let you see how it turned out, as I have not see anything like this displayed on this forum before, and also to let others know that the uses of"Z" is limited only by our imagination. Comments please, pro or con. http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1006795270gsd.jpg

I think it's lovely :)

I'd like to find out how you did it -- using customized materials, or careful brushstrokes, or both?

Thanks,
dave

Thanks for the sentiments, they are all humbly accepted.
Davey, to tell you how I did it would be a miracle, but I will try to remember some of the steps I took. I pulled out a flat background. then I laid on various colors randomly, then I used the smudge-brush and pulled and pushed blending one color into the other, then I think I began playing with the transperency and light. I cannot remember what else I did. I was only experimenting and did not think it would have turned out as it did, so I did not save a script. I will however, try to replicate something similar and make sure I turn on the recorder, mistakes and all, maybe you folks may be able to clean it up into something worthwhile.

Well, I definitely think that you achieved the look that you were after. The colors do look like they could be directly from an opal. Very pretty!

Looks like high-quality Queensland crystal Opal to me, DeeVee, and I should know...
It's my birthstone, and I've cut, carved and polished thousands of carats of it!
Great job on the luminous nature of the colours!

Thanks StoneCutter. I was awaiting your comment. I am happy I passed, I now have to try and duplicate the technique, so that I can write a script, that others may be able to try. You just never know what will happen when you click on one of these buttons. I regret not getting in the habit of saving everything, examine, then delete or keep if things turn out the way you expected them to.
