View Full Version : Bird of Prey - Texture help, please
A few days ago I decided to try modeling a "Bird of Prey", a Klingon ship. I quickly realized I didn't know how to do it in ZBrush. I'm used to modeling heads, not starships! So in the end I decided to use Wings. (I think it was WingedOne who posted a link to it, thank you! :)) I've now finished the modeling:

Now we get to the ZBrush part. :) I'd like to do texture maps and bump maps in ZBrush. I'm running into a problem though. The texture seems to stretch itself out into the wrong place. Here is an example image:

The smaller image is what I painted. Then I used TextureMaster to pick it back up again, and the result was the large image. Very bumpy and distorted.
Painting directly onto the polygons won't work because of the very low resolution of the BOP. Any suggestions?

I can't give you any input into your texture prob, Muvlo, but I can and will thank you for showing one of my favorite all-time ships...!
Bad table manners those Klingons have, but they do build lovely ships!!
:tu: :tu: :tu:  :D
Thanks Stonecutter. :) Learning to use Wings and modeling this have driven me crazy over the past few days, and it is nice to settle back into Z. :D

Actually, IMHO, it's the Romulans that have the coolest looking ships. :D
Aside from that, have you tried sub-dividing the mesh in ZBrush and then applying texture master to the model. I don't know if that'll help or not though it looks to be a pretty dense mesh as it is.
My Multi-Marker ZScript might be useful for building starships in ZBrush http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=006310
BTW, It wasn't me that posted the link to Wings. :) I don't know who did though.
The ship looks great.
I'm (mumble mumble (age)) and have a model of the Millinium Falcon (spelled wrong I suppose) And a bird of prey model hanging in my puter room. I also smack any kid upside the head who tries to tell me the Falcon is ST ~L~
LOL DLee, and I smack people upside the head who tell me SW is better than ST! ;) I also have a small and not-very-detailed model of a bird of prey, which is what I used as a reference for modeling this.
Whoops WingedOne, I just checked and saw it was Frenchy P. Thanks Frenchy! :) About dividing the mesh, I'll give it a try. I'm curious why a texture is being stretched though. It's not really part of the model, is it? Is it bad that the model is DXF?
The fact that the model is DXF might have something to do with it, since the DXF format doesn't support UV mapping. You could try assigning UV's using the Tool>Modifiers>Texture menu and then save it as an OBJ instead and then import it back in with that format.

Thx Muvlo :) but if you go there http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=000472
you will see that I am'nt the first !
DrawingTroll would be thanked :)
For the texture try this great site http://textures.forrest.cz/ page 7 Metal or others

I get those stretches with the .ztls too tho =/. Everytime I drop and pickup the object there is some more distortion and stretching
Thank you too, DrawingTroll! :)
Well Aurick, I tried that, but ZBrush kept deciding to crash every time I converted the file. So I used a different program to do the conversion. But ZBrush produced the same results. Right now I'm doing basic colors in another program-- but I'm going to get this to work eventually!!! I know what great textures ZBrush is capable of... :)
