Maybe I say. Depends on what happens to distract me. Or if the idea does the big fizzle. :D http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1010439709jox.jpg

Looks really cool so far. I hope you finish it. Do you intend to make it color or keep it black & white. The black & white look is eye-catching in this one.

Thanks for lookin in on this bit of body.
Kathy, what this is, is I don't know yet. Something benevolent, perhaps though with a certain edge... An angel without mercy perhaps.
Christos... a gargoyle would be a credible way of continuing this one - I do love those fellas, and have been collecting them for a while now.
Wingedone, a b&w image, of the completed version may be an interesting thing to do with it. Thanks for the suggestion.
But, the big thing here is simply I don't yet know which direction to take this one. A draw back for those of us who don't plan images, but rather let them happen. :D

This is excellent - with a minor modification this could also become a face!
(at least I see a face possibility here - might be my eyes!...perhaps a demonic face)
The wings in particular look great and the torso very cool.

Look forward to where you go next!

awesome modeling! how on earth can you sculpt such detail from sphere, or whatever it was, without crunchin, creasing polys goind haywire? that's still a complete mystery to me ....

btw, i'd opt for a gargoyle either, it has something evil about it already.

Hi el_pix :) All the things about ZBrush that mystify have answers. Sometimes by playing about, but mostly through the QuickLinks (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=000049) section. Check it out - it has been of tremendous help to me time and time again.

Very mysterious, it could take so many shapes. It makes me think of the angels in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. And I agree, the lack of color is neat. :tu:

Since I had to stay up all night, in order to flip over to night shift, I took the time to try out some texturing for the body. At this point, I don't know if I will be using it, or some variation. Maybe something else will present itself along the way. http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1010493376xdy.jpg

Filament that was an excellent answer to El Pix. I remember years ago I suggested to my tabla teacher that there still seemed this mysterious aspect that the great musicians had. And he said mystery means you just don't understand something. Just learn bit by bit and eventually you will find there is no mystery.

01-08-02, 04:56 AM
Thank you, thelonious. I regard your comment as a compliment.
Sometimes, after I've spouted off some answer, or tried to show how this, or that, was done, I begin to doubt myself. Did I present the actual steps taken, or ones I thought I had. Not so long ago, an artist on these pages had asked how a particular skin effect was accomplished. Well, I wisked off an answer - then discovered that what what I thought was all wrong. Embarrassing to say the least. He had the good grace to not beat me me with my own email! All in all, it did help me solve a bit of a mystery for myself, so all was not lost. Still-> :o lol.

Nice texturing, looks like we share similar technique as far as Bmp textures and painting.

Question:

I have found it a struggle to deal with "stretched" faces (like the wing mesh). As the "stretched" mesh will not "take" the texture as it presented in the bmp. As the mapping occurrs it also stretches the bmp therefore loosing all the detail I so dearly want to apply. I have to wait till postwork to achieve it through paint. Which is a problem when it comes to animation.

Have you encountered this, or am I missing a step or assumption on models?

I like the chest area, it took your application well. I also think the head is a great match to the theme and muscular build of the body.

Really nice texturing, and in the case of the wings the stretching actually works. You know, it's pretty funny the number of things that end up on an artist's scanner. :)

Kathy, you're not missing anything. UV mapping is basically by polygon, so when polys get stretched the texture goes bonkers. You'd get the same stretching if you unwrapped the texture, painted it flat, and then re-wrapped it. I don't know of anything that will overcome that, although using an extra dense version of the texture in the areas that will stretch can help a bit. The best advice is to simply avoid stretching the mesh when modeling. If something that you plan to do will stretch things much, then it's often better to create a new piece for that part. If anyone HAS found a way to overcome it, I'd love to know!

(Actually, this is the one place where Texture Weapons is a blessing -- you can edit your UV coordinates on the fly, compensating for stretching. You just need about $1200 to spare for the program! Pocket change, right?)

Excellent character work Filament9... Very cool textures in progress too!
Great torso modeling!
I am curious how you will attach these parts together?! I'm a newbie!

I think I'm going to cry  I would just jump for joy if I knew how you got those wing thingies to llok like they do, did you start the whole thing out as a sphere?

However you did, I think its just awsome, great, spectacular, excellent, should I go on... :D

PusGhetty, Mr Z, :b1: the torso and wings are all one sphere. By building up what would have been the shoulder areas, then pulling them out, I was able to create a passable wing. Stay in "edit" mode. If possible, save the various stages of your model - other ideas may present themselves as you go along. Having an earlier version of the model allows you to backtrack, and explore those variations without sacrificing the current one.
:b2: Attaching the various part: The head will be placed in it's own layer. But only after the torso is complete, and placed in it's final position on the canvas. Once the head is in, it can be moved into position, then utilizing lighting, smudge, enhancment of the color values, blur, the joins can be smoothed out and made to vanish. I usually do this in postrender stages, after everything is placed in it's permante position. Wether this is done in ZBrush (for the declaration of "100% ZBrush," or in a paint program is choice of prefernce each of us makes, and likely based on the needs of the piece. (ZBrush, for postrender work, has it's own look. Moreover, it is an excellent tool for the task.)

Thanks, everyone, for your comments.
::Jibberish, yes he will have arms, which at the moment are presenting their own, special set of problems. Setting the shoulder in, so it doesn't look set in, I think will take some doing. Postwork, postwork, postwork!
As yet, I have no concrete ideas for the lower portion of the torso. A few rather vague ones floating about. Something I should do, is work out the general idea, before I start modelling. Might help.

Fil, I think this is very well executed...!
A thought for you...You can make a new doc, the same size, import your render as a texture, fill the layer, and carry on. I'm not suggesting this should be abandoned as a 3D project, merely suggesting that you load it this way, and just 'play' on it.
Why?
Because doing this will remove the stress of figuring out what to do next, will probably stimulate some new ideas, and you'll be off to the races again! You can add components, paint it in 2.5D, anything you want. It has been my experience that this will give you 'fresh eyes', and will inspire a fresh approach...Sometimes you're just too close!

Great work so far! :tu: :tu: :tu:

Well, I've mucking about with this one for sometime now. And it just doesn't work, no matter what I do. I think the basic problem is that I approached the torso completely wrong. So, it's headed for the recycle bin. http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1013056269zue.jpg
