Hi :)

I'm very excited to share with you the second sneak peek of ZBrush 4R2! (ZBrush 4 Release 2)

The previous sneak peek (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=127664) showcased the new and improved BPR renderer that has been updated to a full 32-bits floating-point HDR pipeline.
With Z4R2 you will be able to render high quality images while utilizing improved materials, lights, and environment mapping.

Z4R2 packs significant, new features, as well as major enhancements throughout ZBrush.
I do believe ZBrush 4R2 will enable you to be more creative and productive than ever before.

We will be posting more information upon our return from SIGGRAPH.
For now, enjoy this pre-Siggraph preview.

One item on my wish list is the ability to cut a Mesh has finally come true... But it would be extra nice if when you cut there's an option to (Choose and) make the wedge/hole shapes so when parts get printed, they can be re-fit together...easily.

Watching closely.
What do we see? Booleans (meaning some topology) or voxels (needs retopology) ?
I don't see any mapping on these. Especially on the building like. A cubic projection of a texture only.
3DCoat, someone even felt pity for this app, does it, years now, easier and with better texturing. But you need to retopo this building, meaning.... better model it in a decent classic application from scratch. Even there, to UV such constructions, isn't the easiest, lot of islands, unfortunately.
Once again, no news for retopo tools. Something easy and clever I mean.

Waiting and always loving zbrush.

with production in mind, the feature I really need is vector displacement extraction. Mudbox displacement is now much better than zbrush,
it extract vector displacement but even the standard displacement extraction is better.
Zbrush really needs to improve in this area, I really dislike doing all the work with zbrush but having to exctact the maps with other applications.
Also polypaint layers woud be very useful.
Considering how many features zbrush is now packed with, a little interface cleanup would be useful, I miss v3 sometimes, less buttons!

And yes, 64 bit support, it's about time.

I see an incrementation of voxel sculpting this time...Maybe the future of digital sculpting is a mix of voxel and polygons technique....

There looks to be some amazing additions, though it was abit like
WOW brain can't register so much awesomeness

In saying that. There are features that Zbrush is crying for when it comes to production, which havent been hinted at.
No 64bit...no linux version... where is vector displacement and Ptex...
and Im sorry but the retop tools in Zbrush are awful and clunky.
(3d Coat is light years ahead in that department.

Really looking forward to getting my hands on it.... just hope Pixologic has a nice suprise for us come release (ie the above features) :)

looks interesting. wondering what the section on the Anatomical sculpt was for? I mean it was masking, some inflate and polypainting with red color. Seemed like regular Z Stuff to me. Did anyone figure out if there was a new feature in that part.

The building type model had booleans in it I guess, could be useful for hard surface stuff. But it used a lot of transpose, and was played real fast. Didn't seem to be using subtools, seemed like blocks and cylinders were being added to the same tool on the fly. Couldn't see the subtool menu.

Didn't get what was new in the material section TBH. Procedural maybe?

There definitely is some Sculptris type feature there at the beginning.

Zspheres or Zsketching is getting a boost. i like that part.

no retopology features....retopology is a hurdle for me in 3D:cry:

Im so excited, sculptris style is gonna be awesome. There will be so many ways to generate geometry in zbrush. And having Zbrush brushes combined with adaptive tessellation is gonna be amazing.

HDR and rendering i think is gonna be more useful than we think, especially if it is relatively easy to use and combined with the timeline will be awesome.

I just HOPE we will see a little production focused additions in the form of vector displacements, ptex and the ever elusive 3d uv painting. oh i hope.

Not sure, but maybe they fixed cavity masking in brush options.

08-06-11, 10:46 AM
Finally, you fixed the cavity masking....lol, what an update!

slickytom
08-06-11, 10:55 AM
Interesting. The beginning part looks like the inverse of shadow box. Instead of dealing with masks on the outside of shadow box, it looks like you can manipulate the model inside ... pushing it and pulling it to reveal more of the defined resolution shadow box space.

The sketch and add clay feature looks pretty cool too! If this is version 2 of the zsphere sketch I hope the current way still exists but with the ability to create smoother zsketches without having to smooth them out manually each time, which is very tedious.

Zeddicus
08-06-11, 11:11 AM
The boolean style operations seem to be done with new brushes that are primitives (cylinder, sphere, and champhered cube are seen) and allow you to both add and subtract new geometry. I also see a curves brush that lets one create new geometry from nothing, or from a polymesh, using masks or a defined curve, all as if it were truly clay. The new slice brush will be very nice and seems to work the way a lot of folks expected the clipping brushes to when they were first introduced. Some kind of procedural material and/or texture generator is in there. The mapping on the little castle looks planar (distorts on the sides) so perhaps there are some UV/texturing improvements, also welcome. Also looks like support for HDR maps has been added, not just background plates, with an ability to tweak the resulting IBL to your hearts content. Cavity masking appears to work properly (with some enhancements perhaps?) too. Amazing!

Sadly I see very little that hints they've added any of the commonly requested features (ptex, vertex maps, better retopo, 64 bit, etc) but I will keep my figers crossed anyways. The focus as always appears to be on easily creating geometry from scratch, something ZB has always excelled at. For that I have to tip my hat to Pixologic, whose updates never fail to impress, and all for free no less.

Zeddicus
08-06-11, 11:13 AM
That was supposed to say vector maps, as in vector displacement. What can I say? I'm too excited to type I guess. ;)

The boolean and slice operations look pretty epic so far. That alone is gonna help things a ton. I'm definately looking forward to seeing this stuff at Siggraph.

I'll harp "quietly this time" once again that Z is dying for the continually asked for enhancements: 64bit, vector disp, ptex, Proper paint layers, UI facelift, folders, etc.

Admittedly its a pain to go to other programs for retop, but it seems that every program (except Z) does at least a passable job at retopology: 3d Coat, Topogun, XSI, 3ds Max. I don't know blender, but my buddy's shown me that even that handles retop not bad. I'm so used to using other apps for retop that I don't care at this point.

Don't wanna complain too much because this looks like a nice update so far, but we have to keep harping on this stuff or Pixologic will think we don't care.

shulinchung
08-06-11, 01:45 PM
Finally, you fixed the cavity masking....lol, what an update! Is cavity masking currently broken?
I always had trouble enabling auto cavity masking under brush menu. I thought that's just me.
However, the cavity mask button under the tool/mask sub menu works fine for me......

This looks epic!

Do my eyes lie, or am i looking at Sculptris tech inside Zbrush!? I guess we all knew it was coming, but still.. HELL YEAH!!
Sculptris Tech + Booleans + (the new curve stroke thing) = awesomeness in the raw.
I don't want to jump the gun though, so i'll leave my fingers crossed for now ;)

PS. These features are awesome looking, truly, however i really hope we can get a correct trackball camera in R2.

pretty cool, but the zbrush interface still stinks(too confusing and complicated),
oh.. and its too expensive.
(would be nice if they had a stripped down slim version, with just the essentials lots of the fluff removed for less $ and have the extras as a pack that you could buy and install,
So people could buy it in sections/parts..
base program.. then later "plugins/extras" whatever.. as they need them)

------

i'm gonna keep harping on the interface until they give an alternate interface option. its atrocious IMHO.

Nice work pixologic! Seems like there is some really interesting new features.

It would be fantastic if the smooth uv issue would be resolved in this release as well. I know it has been mentioned before in this thread

http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=61642&page=1&pp=15

The fix would be that the uv would be smoothed from lowest subdiv to the highest when you create a texture map from your polypainting. Just the same option you have when creating a displacement map.

I really enjoy polypainting in ZBrush so I would love a fix on this issue. I don't want to complain or anything, just see that ZBrush can be better implemented in a pipeline. Thank you for a great application.

Looks nice, but :
1- Are the annoying issues like import/export messing orientations and/or meshes fixed ?
2- Is the retopology tool improved or do is it still 10 times faster for me to go in max/maya/topogun/3d coat to do it ?
3- Can we paint directly on textures now ?

Looking forward to it nonetheless :)

Seems like it's going to be a lot of nice updates. Great job Pixologic!

I only hope the issue with smooth uv (suv button) will be resolved in the new release. The smoothing of the uv's disappears when the user goes down a subdivision. This has been mentioned in an earlier thread.

http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=61642&page=1&pp=15

The issue could be resolved with smoothing the uv from the lowest subdivision to the highest when the user creates a new texture from existing polypaint. Since I really enjoy polypainting and working in ZBrush in general it would be fantastic to have this problem fixed.

I don't mean to complain. ZBrush is my favourite 3d application and I only want it to be better integrated into our pipeline at work. Thank you for a fantastic sculpting application Pixologic!

Although the new features look awesome (and the music was awesome too) I really hope they were able to fix the ZSpheres bug where converting the zspheres to a mesh crashed the program :/ (Not sure if it happens on Windows, I know it happens on Mac).

My workaround was to build the base mesh in Maya and import but I like to work all in ZBrush if I can :)

Also can anyone explain what people mean by "Sculptris style sculpting" ? I've played with Sculptris but it seems like the same for me.

Im actually excited for the new zspheres/sculptris thing going on.
zbrush is an interesting program, full of really great ideas... too bad most of them are very poorly implemented!

btw, for everyone that is saying stuff about retopo, try topogun 2... its in beta but in my opinion better than 3d coat. although 3d coat is pretty cool too.
I was hoping we would see actualy texture painting (and owrking layers) but i guess thats probably not happening... it's a shame, it would be so nice to use spotlight to actually do my final texture work. oh well, mudbox will have to suffice for that.

as far as simple sculpting and mesh creation goes, it looks like zbrush is and always will be the king (probably!)

ochabrand

this is going to be awesome!!! thanks!

I m surprised to read some people complains... itīs ok to have a list of wishes, i have my own wishes too, but wishes shouldnt become demands. The new features seen in this video are really mind blowing but some people are really dissapointed because it isnt what they were expecting. if you found other software to do what you demand , go and use it... I like zbrush to be creative and try to explore new ways with the risk of getting lost sometimes.

for example, I dont find spheres 2 very usefull... but maybe some others are crazy for them and are so happy to have them. I use zspheres rig a lot and i wish they would add some way to paint weights but i know they are not working for me.. at least not ONLY for me..and only a few are really interested in rigging and animating inside zbrush so i will have to understand that they arent working on this right now..

quote from the first post "Z4R2 packs significant, new features, as well as major enhancements throughout ZBrush.
I do believe ZBrush 4R2 will enable you to be more creative and productive than ever before."

We do not know what "major enhancements" mean, but it could cover bugfixes, so let's at least try it out before comment on what's missing ;)

I'm not using all the features in ZB either, but am very pleased with the ones i do so far, and the ones that do have bugs I'm sure the pixo-team adress in this update...

Looks promising all in all!:tu:

Zeddicus
08-09-11, 07:01 AM
I don't see anyone really complaining, just being wishful which is understandable. There are some features that many people want (me included) which are becoming a common theme though. The only time Pixologic has really listened to anyone is back when ZB 2.0 came out (Weta). Now that felt like a massive jump in evolution over the previous version. Later releases have been more conservative, tending to focus more closely on one or two areas. This time around it is the lighting system, which was probably a lot of work, and a few other useful tidbits. I'm sure there are a lot of things Pixologic would love to add, including some of the features users really want, but resources like time, money, and man power are probably too limited to do any truly massive overhauls. They would likely have to charge for upgrades, in which case it would be harder to justify their tendency to go where they want and not where the users want. For a developer, an app is kind of like having a child. You want to raise them your way, not the way everyone thinks you should. This too is understandable. So long as we continue to respect their wishes, I'm sure they will do likewise with ours. Patience is the key, and if you don't have that, then there are always other programs one can use to get the job done (provided you can afford them of course).

This is an insane work you guys at pixologic have done on this release. I can't wait. Dynamic Tesselation, Booleans, Curve modeling, Cut tools... outstanding !

It's true that a better retopology tool would be welcome, like a "retopo from polypaint" button or something :). But still, the best retopo tool out there remains the user himself. It all depends on how well you plan ahead, so I can live without it. This all looks very promising. More than one month to go... It's gonna drive me crazy lol.

just the viewport shaders that sculptris works with. although i believe this has probably more to do the way the program works at its core (zbrush uses pixols while sculptris is probably more similar to mudbox... i guess)

I can't tell any real difference in the way they look between the two programs other than in ZBrush you have realtime shadows added in. In fact, Sculptris' mats are basically the same setup as a very simplified ZBrush matcap materials, only without all the adjustable settings. You could take a screenshot of a ZBrush matcap or the sphere image it's built from and use the image in Sculptris as the material. That's all the materials really are in Sculptris - images of rendered spheres. And that's the simple beauty of the mat system it has.

Here's some thoughts on the spline based objects they were showing: Looks like a mesh (simple or complex) lofted along the length of a spline. Maybe a curve a like the Sweep Profile 3D object. At a basic level a Zsphere chain is a spline with a mesh lofted along it, so might there be a way to convert a zsphere to a spline to use for this?

Thanks for posting that Richard, interesting. I use repeat last action (1 key) for strokes all the time, but of couse it dont work for just for strokes and on other subtools, could be a nice gem in R2. I often find its the smaller additions that can make the biggest differecnes.

Is this the new version of zbrush?

Here is a video (http://www.3dtotal.com/siggraph_diaries/exhibitor_pixologic.html) from Siggraph if anyone is interested.

So the new ability to generate curves, use booleans, slice, and so on is all thanks to what they're calling "Dynamesh", eh? Basically it is the ability to dynamically remesh your tool in realtime as you work. That is really great actually, especially considering how one of the problems you often run into is polygons that have become too stretched. This is really going to help artists a lot, and make it feel more like clay than ever. Hopefully LightCap will be good enough for final rendering too, and simpler to use than renderers like Mental Ray and Vray.

Edit: Oops, I see someone has already posted the video back a page. Well, thats ok. It's so awesome it's worth posting again! ;)

I'd like to be able to import and export color and 32bits displacement mapsConsidering the overhaul to the lighting system, which includes support for 32 bit floating point HDR maps, it is entirely possible that your wishes are possible.

Just wanted to give my opinions from Siggraph.

"Dynamesh, Wow!"

3D Printing was also very well represented.

hmmmm.... so i guess that kinda takes away the need to do the "REPROJECT" onto different meshes when you run into trouble spots while doodle (although you'd still probably have to do it onto final animation ready retopo mesh).

that's really cool.

but it's funny that nobody from the pix crowd mentions sculptris in relationship to dynamesh... that's the FIRST thing that pops to mind for most users i think but they're doing a very rigorous job of not conflating that functionality with dynamesh.

granted, it seems like dynamesh does more like doing those booleans and retaining quads but none of that tech is derived from sculptris?

Depends on if Dynamesh generates the same triangular geometry as Sculptris, or smooth zbrush friendly quads. Anyone who's worked on a Scuptris mesh inside zbrush knows it's kind of icky for scuplting and smoothing in that program. If the former is the case, I imagine you'd still have to reskin and re-project after generating new geometry just to "clean" it for ZB sculpting.

Any whiff of attention given to the retopo tools? Thats one of the few remaining things that is increasingly driving me out of Zbrush to third party apps.

Backface masking is BROKEN on the current OSX version. It's a big deal for me.

in the last few links (siggraph interview video and the 3dworld write up - basically siggraph related press releases) sculptris is not mentioned as contributing to dynamesh and actually is not mentioned at all pertaining to zb4r2.

that just seemed kinda odd to me when that's the first thing i thought when i saw the first clip in sneak peak 2 - "oooooh, sculptris like functionality in zb!".

just seems kinda very deliberate to me and it strikes me as interesting.

By what I have seen and read, DynaMesh isn't triangles (though Z will toss one in to maintain polyflow). That's why they say nothing about sculptris. It acts like it but its structure building algorithm is not.

Once again, I am assuming this by what I have seen and read.
I could be very wrong. Though I don't think I am.
But I could be...lol.

Beautiful work by Pixologic, hope to see preview videos that are more revealing, would be nice with some facts.

Boolean operations are just awesome, I wonder if they would also consider improving the symmetry - it could be nice to sculpt architectual stuff like capitals for columns. Right now you can only sculpt mirrored on x,y,z - but imagine you could add more axis. Imagine being able to sculpt the same on all sides of a box.
How cool it would be if one could actually program the symmetry, create your own guides for the points to follow, one can dream.

Oh yeah - and please fix retopology and add support for ptex.

I think you are talking about a snapping of symmetry. Something between our current radial and regular symmetry? Great Idea. I thought about a hybrid grid symmetry a while back but knew it was beyond Z current development.

Whilst this looks great and imo Zbrush is by far
the best sculpting package on the market (somehow looking even better)...
I have not seen any mention of a 64bit version, updated retopology tools.
PTEX or vector displacement..these are fundamental.

At work I am actually seeing people moving to Mudbox
for these very reasons.

Grid symmetry would be interesting too.
It would be cool if you could actually choose the location of the symmetry points on the model and how they should react, a sort of programmable symmetry, but like you say that's probably still a bit beyond current development.
However, the boolean operations might give us other alternatives, didn't expect anything like that before zbrush 5.
