Mahlikus, may I enter the Sarge character I was working on? I want to make a uniform shirt and straps for his helmet. I'll just make sure my gallery entry gets in 2 days before monday to make up for the 2 days I worked on him before Monday...

This is my alternate (work) account...LOL

Though I post the challenges, it is really not my position to say yes or no so do as you wish. It is just said to start fresh so people do not post old and already finished work. Its as I said though, its up to you more then it is to me. =)

Still need some feature, structure, and hair tweeks but here is a caricature of....who? I'll give you a hint..there is a big reason why this guys looks funny....

As for specs, a few hours work, 1.5 million polys, and made from a good ol' ZSphere.
I'll show references later.

Mahlikus,

It looks more like Alan Alda to me, aka Hawkeye Pierce. I didn't recognize the name Ryan Stiles, but a quick google and yup I know him from "whose line is it anyway", but I still think you more closely captured Hawkeye, so give him a martini!
:)

Mahlikus The Black
06-17-04, 01:31 AM
Yeah he does lovecrafty though I would need to flatten his hair and round out the skull for him I think. I think I made Ryan's head too long. Its a first draft anyway so its cool. I will work on him tomorrow. Must get sleep.

Ryan Stiles, I knew it...Damn fine modeling job, Bro! My only 2 crits are 1. ya gotta model
his Adam's apple as it accentuates how long his neck is and 2. his ears are a lot like jug handles, very distinctive as they stick out a lot and look like little C's glued to the side of his head. The trouble with modding his ears at this point is it might screw up the meticulously modeled hair. So take my crits with a grain of salt, as my wife and I guessed
it was him in 10 seconds...Great Job so far...

DrJJ,
That head reminds me (well with the exception of the ring in the nose) of an old 40's and 50's American football player! Maybe even one of the first incarnations of the old Rockem and sockem robots.

like the texturing and shader on him.

Great model MTB! the only thing that threw me off is the hair but other than that it looks like Ryan. that is really weird, because i was actually thinking of doing Ryan Stiles for the challenge, but i am going to come up will some one else. that guy is so hilarious on "Whose Line is it Anyways". gotta love that show! i woud love to see a zscript of some of the early stages.

Great stuff guys!!

Mike! Out of this world, dude! Pix has GOT to get the Mac version ready soon so I can catch up with you.

Kokoro! Outstanding image! The only thing that bothers me about it is the lack of a shadow on the forehead from the helmet. The "beak" part of the helmet (what's above and between the eyes) looks like it may stick out from the head because it's not visually centered. Now, without a shadow, it just looks plastered to the head and bent. If you add a shadow I think it may help top off and already GREAT image. I love the feathers and the expression on his face. Just top notch stuff!

I'm hoping to get a portrait done before monday! We may need an extension on this one, Mike! ;)

Thanx,

Adam

Hi all,

Looks like we got some great entries already :)

Here is my contribution WIP:

http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200406/user_image-1087678840her.jpg

it is a portrait of "Hug-Me-Zelmo"... great person in the Zlimax galaxy.... Saved all the Zeebies from the Zoobies bloody reign...

Little too affectionate if you ask me, but he is an interesting figure in the Zlwuulogo history...

I am going to slap some paint on it after lunch :)

think I am going to give him "Disco Pink" pants, and perhaps a fedora pimp hat :D :tu:

Great challenge! Such awesome entries. You would think that more would get involved considering how many are capable of doing such great heads. Oh well.

Well here's my contribution. It's an African tribal man. He's going to be in a full scene with African landscape. I may not get done by Monday. Extention, maybe? ;)

Here he is>

I am always doing heads so I will add my latest in the challenge. The challenge for me is the dang hair :) Went with the Jan Michael Vincent 70's hairdo. It was fun to do. He was composed from a 3d sphere. The ears were made from torus's modeled. The hair I tried something different this time. I created a layer and put a copy of the head model on it and pushed the model into the z depths until it disappeared into the originally painted head. I then baked that layer and tried to do the hair as normal..ie flat material, fiber brush, a little snake hook brush this time, highlighter and shadow brush....my point for trying it this way was to have more control over where I painted on the shadows and also so I didnt have fiber hair growing out of the ears or at least showing it growing out of the ears..that much of the experiment worked. I also painted a ton of individual hairs on as well. I could spend more time on it easily and still may...but here is my entry for this challenge in it's present state. Happy Father's Day all.

The last several are alot of render adjustments etc. Here is a larger view of the final. There are elements of the hair that could really be cleaned up better in psp or something I am sure.

Alrighty Then, Here's my entry for this weeks challenge. He's a modification of my sarge character. I was gonna enter Sarge, but I wanted to modify the model a bit and in the end he looked more like a prizefighter, so I entitle this piece, "The Contender".

His skin is a modification of Sokar's Skin material. I played with the color because the original was a wee too "pinky" for a tough guy's skin. I also tweaked the specular and also the blending and bump. If you are going to use this skin, you will have to paint your model with a heavy hand to see the color through the translucency of the skin. My boxers face paintjob looks like Emmet Kelly.

I'm also including a light rig which consists of a blue light and a warmer fill. This is a modification of Sokar's light rig to go with his skin. Not sure how a model with a "Normal" material will act with this setup.

Hope Ya like him...121 welcome...

Anyways, I am working through the practical guide- The head will be retextured then placed with its armour and arm- following strikes tutorial!- I have another thread that I have put progress shots in so I will not repost the information.

This one is just for fun. Here we have my boxer modeling what I hope will become the new standard for men's hair fashion...The Amish Wolverine...Growing the beard is the easy part, it's the extensive eyebrow training that I fear will keep this from the mainstream. But I know that if you try, you can do it!

Bija, thanks for the compliment, It's my first time propely using Zbrush so I'm pleased people like it.
For the skin I just used a very low RGB value usually around 10 to 17 and used a mixture of brushes. I found the spray and colourized spray help to get those slight colour differences. Then when it got too much I'd use the normal brush to just smooth it out. I'm hoping a material will really help bring the skin alive with specular but haven't had time to play with that yet.

I have to just say that I think Zbrush has to be the best piece of software I've ever used. Sounds like I'm brown nosing, but I really mean that, I'm always getting frustrated by the how technical and usually buggy other software is. With Zbrush it really reminds me of being back at art school where you use your hands to create. It really has put the control back into the artist's hands, and so far I haven't found many bugs. Keep up the good work guys it really is awesome. Tutorials are great too.
