Use the wood texture like stencil in edited mode.
Mask a red area and use Smoth draw in edited mode.

I'm not a prof like you, i'm hobbist and i've try inspiration, from a poker of painter:Vallejo, Dorian Cleavenger, Chris Caldwell, Julie Bell.
I've bought some book about thats artist and i'm tryng reproduce with some variation every image.
Only in 3d.
