View Full Version : Well, those Aliens in my backyard....

...are still trying to figure out how to fit cubic mapping into their city-building work flow. They're persistent little buggers, they seem to be making progress.

very clean and precise-I like this one very much.

Looks Great! It looks like you used the mesh outline as a texture. Very cool. :tu:

Quite cool picture there. Those aliens sure are busy, aren't they?

I really like the sense of scale and depth. The dull grey/blue and shiny metal gold works well together, and the reflections in the gold metal are something I could get lost in.

still working on growing an organic city via cubic mapping. Added some reflective/transparent material in this one. Rendered in Bryce. :} Jim http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1045429752oyv.jpg

More, please. :)

Yep, those Aliens got so many ideas in their heads about how to use cubic mapping, they just won't settle down...(the geometry on this one was further convoluted in Cinema4D). Note to Jay - I put up some more examples for my Bryce buddies at:

Em S'cuse my ignorance but how are you doing these? Or is it a trade secret? ;) I assume cubic alpha is in there somewhere.

Thanks for the comments everybody. Note to Ken - Thrre are two ways to do the cubic mapping -
Using an alpha to "make 3D", after setting the "mesh smooth" to zero, or
importing your own .obj, after setting the skin smoothness to zero.

Can you share how you get a material on only the edges like that? Or I should saw so that the material on the face is diff that the one on the edge where I'm guessing the polyframe lines are drawn?

Thanks.

Monkeyfarm - I'm probably doing it the hard way. I take the cubic model out to a 3D modeler (Cinema 4D) and add the geometry. Someone - Aurick(?) - had a thread about doing this all within ZBrush. I'm pretty sure it was by making the cubic object and then a texture with the MRGBZGrapper. Can't find the thread though. If you changed the PF draw color you should get pretty much the same effect.

You know, if you add some fogging, some choice lights on the blocks, and a concrete style terrain about halfway up the y coord, it would make a kick ass start to a city scene :D

Here is a way to do it all in zbrush.

Cubical skinning - textured cubes

draw 3d object you want to 'cube'
make alpha
Mres 8
MDep 100
MSm 0
select Make 3D

clear layer
draw with new cube tool

(now the 'trick')
select texture - must be a square texture
select tool-modifier-texture -UVTile
(H V Repeat to suit)
Transparent/double if needed

To modify texture with materials

Draw plane 3D - use shift to keep flat and square
select your square texture
Texture master - drop

Select MRGB
Simple brush
Select alpha - square
Line stroke holding shift (if want edge like in pic)
select material
drag onto plane

pick materials with texture master

Select this texture for for 'cubism'

Sorry so terse but I am a bit pushed for time.

Hope it helps!
