well, so here it is, the first - well - *thing* i did in Z.

http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1010358544yxu.jpg

let's call him *BeH2Older*

the - hmmm - *creature* is 100% Z (must've used about each and every tool and function for it), the backdrop and bubbles were done in illusion and afterfx, and the whole thing was put together in photoshop.

that project took *ages* (ok, about 10hrs) and i must say, the learning curve is rather steep, not to mention the zillions of accidental *object-drops*. i felt a certain relief when i returned to trusty ol' photoshop, but then got bored within minutes :) , missing my thick pixol thingies.
*and* i really underestimated, how much retouching and finishing you can actually do within Z.

enough rambling, let's see some comments.
and be rough (read: honest), i know the pic's not that good, and i like it :)

no thumbnail? is there some secret magic behind this? like *always use landscape dimensions*, *make one and submit it too*?
hm, thought they were automatically generated. then, maybe, it's just protection from really baaaad pictures, hehe.

forgot: (always too trigger-happy with the *send* button)

while modeling this blob, i ran into a problem, maybe someone has a solution for:
initially i wanted to do some nasty tentacles, *much* longer and with more detail than i ended up with, because i tried to pull them out from the initial sphere i started the body with. masking and subdividing was no help, because the resulting polys were too long and thin, and still folding in strange directions. i thought about using deformed cylinders or something, but didnt really succeed (didn't try that hard either).

That mouth is very well done -- both the gums and the teeth. The teeth look extremely wicked, although they also look like they are so long as to poke right through his head if he closes his mouth. I like the modeling on them, and the texturing that you did with the gums and the touches of yellow. Also, the veins on the body are good, with just the right amount of bump.

My only negative is that maybe there's a bit much specularity on the lips, and not enough bump. But that's only because I'm such a fan of Southern's lips.

All told, I'd say it's a really remarkable first post! Why do I get the feeling that you've done a fair amount of graphic arts before ZBrush? :)

I think this kicks ass for a first posting, and I especially like the restrained tones you used for the veining!

wee, thanks for that rapid feedback.
i really enjoyed making those teeth, btw.
the whole thing started with a stupid eyeball, until i got somewhat carried away. (maybe listening to tom waits and portishead just doesnt give the right inspiration for nice, happy picures).
but then, you're absolutely right, the *lips* could use some more bumps (and the whole thing some moe skills :)
actually, i really did some graphics before, but illustration and drawing wasn't really my cup o'tea, until now ...
i worked a lot with photoshop and various 3d packages, guess that's why my approach to Z is still a little *wrong* in many ways, modeling too much, not painting enough.

anyways, it's fun.

Oh yes, I agree with Aurick and the others, my first post never came even close to yours, but then again I've only been in the 3D world for 5 days now

I love the texture on the skin and I would love to know how you got the skin colour and the lip colours to have that blend affect.

Excellent first post, looking forward to the next :tu: :tu: :tu:

that was cheap, mrZ, easily done with some texturemastering (flat- and simple brush at really low rgb values), i then unwrapped the texture to a layer (just create a layer, select your texture and push *ctrl-f*) and made excessive use of the *smudge* tool /rgb only), mrgbz-grabbed the layer and applied the texture again.
actually i'm not at all happy with it, though, it's all a bit blotchy and lacks detail, but if you can resize your document, things should work better.

bravissimo, el_pix, thats a gorgeous 1st z-pic!!! for any future tentacles you might want to have a look into this thread (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=000191).
