I have had this idea lurking in my brain for a while now to create a sort of mini-ecology of an alien/alternate world. The idea would be to focus on several geographical locations and create the wildlife that would inhabit said location. This is the first concept sketch I have completed for the project. I have several more in the works. This image is sketched entirely in ZBrush with some color adjustments done in Photoshop. It is all 2d tools....Flat Material and Paintbrush using just RGB. I used Intensity, Contrast, and Shading Enhancer brushes on it as well. I love sketching in ZBrush...it is very fluid and easy. My only problem is I haven't practiced sketching with my Wacom tablet very much...I usually sketch on paper...so it is still a little awkward for me. This will be a prime excersize to improve my tablet skills.
This creature is the Mulgatalope, an insectavore/herbavore that inhabits the Damora Sveldtlands. It stands approximately five feet high at the shoulder. As you can probably summize I am focusing on Sveldtland creatures right now. I have an herbivorous beast of burden I will be sketching as well as a carnivorous predator. It is my plan once I have finished with the concepts to actually model and render these creatures in their appropriate environment.

Perhaps Mentat you could kill two birds with one stone.....I believe wacom makes a pen that allows you to draw on paper while also "drawing" electronically. If I remember right they call it Ink pen.
cool pic look forward to your world.

Very technical illustration.
It's seems a 3d mesh with a flat texture.

It's amazing how well you can sketch thing's out, just can't wait to see it finished 3D
He looks cool  .... I love the big feet. :tu:
The big feet makes me kinda think that his environment needs em? maybe he lives on soft marshy kinda soil? or mabe a bog?

Hi Mentat the seven
So this charming thread (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=014320) will be a very good exercice for the training of your 2D Zbrush skill with wacom :)

Actually Zaphod my point was I want to do practice more digital sketching with my Wacom so it doesn't feel awkward...I could put a sketch under the mylar on the tablet and trace over it but that wouldn't be the same as sketching it freehand.
Zaphod ... there is such a land type that is a bog :) ... its not just an animal (whatever animal ur were talking about  ) ... its kinda like a very wet and foggy marsh land ... kinda.

Nice critter Mentat, can't wait to see it modeled and textured. This new project of yours remind me of that old Apturis Major thread that you started.

Hi Lonnie,
I think Zaphod was referring to how slippery the Wacom feels, as if you are using a frictionless ink pen. In my experience, that makes it a lot harder, if not impossible, to draw even a simple circle. It's like ice skaters in dress shoes. The way I use my Wacom is to put a piece of relatively smooth paper on top of the plastic. This creates additional friction and a slightly rough feel as your pen tip moves over the natural micro-hills and valleys in the paper surface. With the right paper, you will have a much better experience with your digital sketching and painting.
Very nice creature design. It is interesting to me that writers and artists are driven by something inside to create new creatures and whole new worlds.
