Hi, Right now I am working on my " Door Keeper (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=002924)" Image and I was wondering how to make rusty key model, especialy lower part with hard corners... It takes me some time but here is the result... I am not sure if anybody already know this technique, however if someone gues how it was created I will upload key model with rusty texture for downloading :) (I hope somebody will be interested in it :D )

I'm not quite sure how you did it (being only new to this) but I must say they look great and would love to learn how you did them.My only guess is that they were modeled in another program or they are a combination of rectangles, spheres and cylinders. But just a guess. :D :tu:

Hi Syco : You are right it was created from cylinder and ring, but what about the last part? It is the secret right now :D. It was created in ZBrush, not imported.. If nobody will gues it in 24 Hours I will write here small tutorial...

Christos : I would like to be as good as you are one day, your anatomy knowledge is unbelievable, and you know, anatmoy is my favourite hoby so you are my hero :D...

Thelonious, Pam, DeeVee, Christos :
thanks, you are giving me motivation.
What about your gues? :D

Three flaten 3D cubes?Maybe

cneofotistos
01-06-02, 07:11 AM
thanks, peter, your anatomical knowledge rules too.

oh! I didn't realise we had to guess...

ok, here's my guess:

you start out with a rectangle.
mask all of it, except for a smaller rectangle near the bottom.
size it on the y axis, until it becomes a dent.

then, mask two side rectangles, of the same height as the middle dent, and size them on the x axis, until they become the two side protrusions.

close enough?

lovely keys, and lovely texture, I have to repeat!

hey, it's not my fault :)

you have always taught me to use extrude in 3DstudioMax :)

much love, my friend

Hey cneofotistos that is all very good for old users but i'm a new user and  I'm stumped.Don't suppose you could explain it to me a bit better. :D :tu: S  ry for being a dumb arse.

Umm.. how about a flattended cube with other cubes subtracted using Zcut?

levius
01-06-02, 07:54 AM
I got som problems with 1st step : masking and making the dent , can you write me /show me more? Thanx..

BTW: what about this object? :D http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1010332440thd.jpg

syco26

Can you do that in z thelonious?

levius
01-06-02, 07:57 AM
Thelonious : It could be, but I am not sure if you can create and save this object after substraction, is it possible?

cneofotistos
01-06-02, 08:23 AM
no, thelonious and peter, it isn't possible I'm afraid.
when you export to a polymesh, all the substractive objects you've used, become additive; this means, all the rectangles you have used, will become solid, and not "empty"

however, it's not difficult to mask in the way I mentioned earlier.

here's a small zscript to help.

first mask the whole object, and then, in edit mode, select the "move" option, and the white square as an alpha. then, with
"control+alt" pressed, drag on the object to unmask a particular area. control+drag masks again.

hope I was clear enough...

Thank Christos I understand now, I wasnt sure how the selection looks from side...

Becouse I still didnt tel you my technique... :)

Thanks Christos,

I always wanted to know if that was possible. The trouble with not knowing much is that it one avoids asking these sorts of questions till one has given it a go.

A simple but useful script. It is all starting to come together. You wouldn't believe it but it was only last week that I checked out uphams Z land and learned that you don't paint objects with the paintbrush.

My guess would be that you used the MultipleMarker tool with three flattened cubes. There are so many different ways to skin the Kat ;) that it's hard to guess which one you might have done.

You did a marvalious job, good luck on the rest of the picture.

levius
01-06-02, 10:43 AM
aurick, I tryed it, and yes its possible, but you have to position it very precisely so It looks like one object... However what about object on the picture above ? :D

Well I think you have skined this cat very well, thanks for sharing this image, it is excellent!

hm... peter. If I'm any judge, you must have used the "hard" bend dial, possibly with masked selections. am I right :)

upham

Levius: You have a secret advanced copy of ZBrush 1.5 which has a advanced poly extrusion????
I'm guessing .... and wishing ...
Upham :)

levius
01-06-02, 12:43 PM
Christos, Upham : No :), its the same technique I used for keys :)

cneofotistos
01-06-02, 12:48 PM
you could have rotated the cube, this way and that, and applying some "flatten" :)

NOW, I know I'm right

levius
01-06-02, 12:52 PM
Im not quite sure what exactly mean flatten, btw I can not find "optimize" too, where it is? :)

Hint: It is made from one cube :D

then, peter, my friend, I have NO idea.
post a zscript :)

Watching this thread with interest since I have a cover I need a key for... and that style key would be perfect. So waiting anxiously for a script.

levius
01-06-02, 02:54 PM
D.Lee : you can download my key from "rusty key download" tread :), however you probably want to do one youself :).. So, first I was so lazy to create zscript, I wanted just to write tutorial, but your post persuade me... Now when it is done I realised that it doesnt work, probably becouse of my weird technique :)..

So I got to write it as I wanted before :

1. create cube and resize
2. check of, SH and SV in Tool/modifiers
3. in Initialize panel decrease HD and VD
so it will be about 8 to 12 or more, it depends on object you want to create
4. go to edit object, move, decrese paint size so it is really small, check the z, x, or y in tranform/ modifiers and move pixels one by one..
5, ig you are happy with your shape, check SH and SV and you can see smoothed version of your object, now us divide, once two or tree times, more you use it the more sharpen the object will be..

Ok, :D I hope you like it, if you have som questions write it here
