If ZBrush is the best graphics program (which I definently agree to), who is the runner up :qu:

I'm really not sure that there is a good answer to that question. Whatever program that you use the most and gets what you want done is the one that is the best -- for you. However, some are more versatile than others, and some are extremely specific in what they do. Even Final Fantasy and Shrek used several different programs throughout production.

The best animator is probably Maya. The best terrain generator is maybe Bryce, maybe Vue. The best people-maker/poser is, well, Poser. The best renderer is probably Project:Messiah.

But I firmly believe that ZBrush is the most versatile of the lot. It's certainly the most "do it all well and at a reasonable budget" program, too!

I've never used Max, but it does seem to be a very popular program for modeling stuff.

If you really want to see what programs are good, and compare them according to your style and what you're looking for, I recommend going to Renderosity or 3DCommune and checking out the art galleries. Each program has its own gallery, and by looking at the stuff that's been created in those programs you can quickly get a feel for 1) Which ones are popular and 2) Which ones you like.

That's how I found ZBrush. I was looking at the Renderosity galleries, and these two people (Pixolater and SouthernGFX) kept producing the most unbelievable pictures with a program called ZBrush. I was pretty much sold before I even downloaded the demo. ;)
