Is it possible to open someone elses zbrush image and grab materials from them? It's something I've been wondering. I know that with Studio Max, when you open an image it gives you whatever material happens to be used in it.

If you have the persons ZDoc file then sure, just open it in Zbrush and all the material information is available. But to get them from a JPG, BMP or PSD file, Nope :(

Do you know how Studio Max accomplishes this feat? From a JPG, BMP or PSD?

I suspect that most people here are willing to share thier custom materials per request thou.

actually, what I meant with Studio Max is that when you open a Studio Max file you can use any material in the image. I don';t think grabbing from a jpeg or psd, or any file for that matter, is possible either.

'Morning Shaitan51 . . . :)

If your talking about taking a Material from an "Image", I don't think this is a possibility? :(

If your talking about someone's ZBrush "Document", then this should be possible. If while you have the Document open, you click on "Material / Show Used", it will show only the Materials used during the creation of this Document. The only thing you'd have to do is go through the different Materials shown & pick the one you want. ;)

Although it sure would be nice to have some kind of a feature to "Pick" a particular Material from just an Image! Heheheh.

I hope this helps? Have a good one . . . Mark.

It's true -- if you have the original "ZDoc" (.zbr) file, you can pick the material used in the painting (as long as it wasn't "baked" -- baking converts material attributes to color attributes, and the material will appear as "Flat Color").

Open the Material Palette. The large thumbnail shows the current selection. Drag from this large thumbnail to the canvas, and the material under the cursor will be selected.
