Hi,
The latest ZBrush-test WIP (the mesh is not textureded, the background is temporary)...

http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200305/user_image-1053546953pya.jpg

The 'Dino' is a high-resolution mesh which will later be used for creating a displacement map for a similar and lower-resolution mesh (The Displacement Mapping feature is planned to be included in the next ZBrush release).

I will post mesh/wireframes images of the mesh by tomorrow.

121 welcome,
-Pixolator :)

Absolutely fabulous!!!
Can't wait to see more!! :D :tu:
I am also glad to hear about the DMapping.
Will this Hi res feature be on the new release as well?

*puts on the puppy eyes*

If it is related to DMapping then I am assuming yes...but....

Bring it on Pixolator!! (insert obligatory drool here). The background looks very nice if somewhat spartan. I like it.

Duh! I forgot about that sword...
I think that the discoloration we are seeing is the actual mesh (yet to far to REALLY see)....yes?

Pixolator, this is very nice! I really do like the background. It has a very nice painted style to it. Is there several layers? If you wouldn't mind sharing some insight into the making of the background I would appreciate it. I love that painterly look. Something I have been aiming to achieve for some time now. Thanks for any assistance with this.

OMG  Now that I have been home and get to see the real clarity through DSL, I have to be amazed! Looks like you dropped the model, make a snapshot (smoothed), then finally made another Snap of the mesh on top. Sweet! :tu: I noticed that the big and little dino have dramatic head repositioning and the mesh (or Displacement?) looks wonderful. The little one has a more defined mesh...Maybe Adaptive Displacement... *starts to feel faint*

Bravo Pixolator!

Super duper stuff! It looks like it's textured with the very displacement map it created. Am I close!? I wonder if it works like so....
1. Create a low poly adaptive mesh.
2. When finished tweaking, you hit a button that copies the mesh and allows you to add as many polys to it as your computer can take.
3. Sculpt that high poly mesh to your hearts desire
4. Hit another button to create a comparative displacement map between the 2 meshes.
5. Apply the map to the original low poly mesh.

They are great !
I also like the background very much.
I really would like to know the details how you did the background.

I just love these teasers you create!
You say that the mesh is not textured and yet
I see some definition and highlights. New Material or an existing material yet to be explored? Looks intriging!
Great Background! :tu: :tu:
Can't wait to see the updates!

One of the things I like about this image, is the camera angle. Good choice. the dino meshes/models are superb.

Hi Pixolator,

Not too sure if you can reveal at this stage, but does your displacement mapping technique have anything do to with some of the threads posted over at Bay Raitt's "Spiraloid" forum?

I'm currently using ZBrush to add detail to my base low poly meshes (amongst other things, of course).

Then using some of the techniques discussed on Spiraloid, I am generating a displacement and normal map from the differences between my low poly object and the detailed version.

This allows me to then apply the displacement and normal map to my low poly version, getting a result almost the same as the detailed version.

Which is pretty cool if you animate for games or realtime, as you can use your low poly mesh to animate, but the final rendered result is highres!

I can't wait to see the next v of z.

Best regards,

Zendoftheworld...

Wow... this and your previous teasers have looked amazing! I suppose you cannot comment on the upgrade's features further at this point?

Hey, if ZBrush will be able to create displacement maps for low res meshes out of high res meshes, could it be the tool for creating creatures and textures for Doom III and other games that use normal mapped meshes?

Wauuu Pixolator !! Great !!!
I like more the material effect !! Is only for the new version or this result is possible with the 1.55 ???? Tnx for sharing !!! :tu: :tu:

Background is temporary?? Are you kidding me? ;)

Great image in all regards even if it isn't textured, it really shows the quality of your work - I just love those fringes on the dinosaurs, great stuff :) :tu: :tu:

The pose is also classic! Well done; very expressive :tu:

The mesh looks really solid, man it's so solid it looks like it was painted on, so this high res stuff is amazing to what it lets you do. Great work Pix!!

I am guessing we will have to create high resolution versions of our models that will be captured by the displacement mapping?
If so, cool, I just hope my medium high-performance PC is able to handle the torture. :D

A suggestion, if we would be able to work with only sections of a mesh - of a larger, high res mesh, it would be easier to compute for non-crazy built computers.

This is one awesome Dino, Pix. :tu: :tu: It sort of looks textured though, because of the high level of detail. Can't wait for Displacement mapping.

great job on that.!

i got a question about the displacement mapping. or rather detail extraction. will you be doing that within zbrush ? or outside it by means of the recoded ATI normal mapper by mike bunnell?

Ambient whisper, say what?? ;)

Of course we would be doing this within Zbrush! Since when is Zbrush a multi applet thing? :D

At least from the developers, point of view.

Thank you for your very kind feedback :)
The background was fast to make, I’ll record a mini-tutorial as soon as a I find some ‘free' time :)
Zendoftheworld: Yes, ZBrush is being utilized at Weta Digital .
gummie: The next version has tools designed to help in managing high-resolution mesh.
ambient-whisper : Yes, the full process will be executed in ZBrush.

As for specific questions about a new feature or a process... I will be able to answers these questions as soon as some of the development-dust settles. :)

Meanwhile, here is one more image with the 'dino' mesh...

Not much of a dino fan but the details on that big guys head looks wonderful. This is still in the high resolution mesh mode, right? Oh the fun I am going to have when the (free, Weeee :))upgrade is released :D

But until then you drive carefully you hear, and if you go to work by bike remember to wear a helmet :)

Thanks for the teaser, although you're killing me softly with these sneak peeks, thanks for the teaser. :tu: :)

I created a very basic foliage script in this thread (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=011137). It outlines the basics for creating the type of background Pixolator did in his Dino pic although his imagery is much more dynamic and robust than the simple script I present here. You can do a lot with this technique and you can expound upon it and tweak it almost indefinitely. I would even go so far as to suggest it could be the next great "alpha-century" method. Perhaps we could call it the "Terra Firma" method :) I still hope Pixolator shares some of his techniques with us. It is nice to see how other people think and work. :)

Hey.. if both the dinos are high-resolution meshes, how did you go about posing them for the picture? Is that another new feature (gasp), or did you just do a lot of vertex-moving?

DMerchen
05-24-03, 12:02 AM
Perhaps we are seeing the displacement map on a low res mesh which could be posed easier. ;) :D

Thanks for your kind feedback :)

The dinos are the same high-resolution ZSphere mesh which was ‘posed’ to produce both dino-versions.
ZSphere poses are available in the current (1.55b) ZBrush version and have further been enhanced for the next ZBrush release (a free upgrade to registered users) .

Here is an example of a ZSphere walk-cycle...
http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200305/user_image-1054233365rrh.gif

The walk-cycle needs to be refined (primarily the movement of the tail) but it has sufficient detailed to fulfill its primary R&D objectives.

The animation was done by utilizing a ZScript which is able to interpolate between stored key-frames (pose) of a ZSphere tool. This ZScript will be completed and published after the release of the next version.

Pixolator, Look what you have done! How far you have taken Zbrush from a painting program to this. Where will it go from here. You must have a great sense of artistic satisfaction. How can we ever thank you? 50.
