View Full Version : The Wreck
When I came to the Cayman Islands 28 years ago there was a wreck at the Eastern part of the island. I was told that it was supposed to have been a supply ship for the Bay of Pigs invasion.
Sadly it ran aground on the reefs of Grand Cayman.
Over the years, the sea and elements have had their effect on the wreck. Very little of it is visable today. However, this is a reminder of how it once looked, many tears ago.

This is really nice, Joe! (Although for a mariner it is a sad sight...)
I think you might want to set the RGB value higher on the hulk, because your horizon line is showing through...
On the other hand, the way the water is done really brings the reef feel out, and I can really see the shelving...(I hope the navigator lost his job, because it's pretty obvious that this isn't a navigatable area to be fooling around in! )
Another wonderful image, and the way the wreck is placed is really nice compositionally!

Thanks for your comments SC.
BTW this is my first image using the tablet. There are certain things that it is definitely better for but I have to revert to my mouse for others. A matter of speed.
I can see myself using it more and more though.
I followed your advice and just used it as is without any modifications. Works fine that way as far as I can see.

I love your vision of the skeletal monument. I always enjoy viewing divers going into the remains of old ships on the discovery channel. Looks like you gave your tablet an excellant first run. :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:

I use both my stylus, and my trackball Joe...
The trackball is used if I wanted to add a highlight for instance...I move to where I want to apply it, and without touching the ball, I can build up intensity by repeating clicks of the left button...
But for most things, including opening applications, I just have gotten used to 'double-clicking' with my stylus... :)

A bleaker vision than your usual subjects, but very effective.
I have to agree with Stonecutter about the hulk, which could also do with a harder edge to the holes - they look a bit soft-focus.
Excellent choice of a muted palette here; it seems entirely in keeping with the subject. In spite of the reef making its tropical location clear, there is quite a chill feeling to this image of a ship's last resting place. Nice work. :tu: :tu: :tu:
Thanks to all who commented. I also found that the holes in the Hulk were out of focus, I usually magnify areas like this and work at the pixels to sharpen it but I got carried away with the tablet and all that so it remained. The next one will be as sharp focused as I can make it.
The problem is that the water up to this area is quite deep then bang, reef.
I am tild that in the old days, there was a lot of wrecking done along this coast by the islanders because of the closeness of the reef to land and the water's depth. They would mount lanters on donkeys and walk them up and down the coast, unsuspecting captains would think that the water was deep all the way in and that would be a fatal mistake.
Here is the update. http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1026870274jqo.jpg

a stranded iron whale... a great concept, DeeVee! anyhow, i feel like a little noise to the wrecks material might help to bring out the rust. imho, the pic works perfecto in the thumbnail but in the bigger version i would love to see more difference between the structure of the water and its victim. also a lil white surf the wrecks bottom might help. just what comes into my mind :)

Jaundel thanks for your suggestions. I thought about what you suggested and the reason why I did not add the noise to the hulk was that I thought it was to far out to be able to see the rust. You could tell from the color that it is rusted.
Very nice image DeeVee! :tu: :tu: :tu:
Very nice, DeeVee :tu: :tu: :tu:

What a difference that makes! Also now makes the hulk itself look more at one with the fine detail of the broken guard rail - a subtle feature I forgot to mention earlier but that I think is very nicely observed. Excellent. :tu: :tu: :tu:
Very nice Deevee. I really like the updated version.
This piece really evokes emotion. One the one hand is the sense of tragedy in such a beautiful place. On the other hand it brings back magical memories of the short time I lived in Hawaii and we would go diving on the weekends, exploring reefs and a few ships :tu: :tu:
Thanks to all who commented on this image. Your comments and suggestions are always welcomed.
I contemplated if I should do this image for a while, and then I thought that you have seen all the fun things about the Cayman's so it would help to complete the overall picture of the islands if I did this one.
The Wacom got a good first work out. I am wondering now why I took two months before hooking it up.
Thanks Kathy,SC,Ron,and Mentat for threatening me bodily harm if I did not!

Glad to see you using that tablet now Joe! That is an interesting picture. I think Juandel is on to something about the rust but I am not sure how to go about doing it with this style of painting. Perhaps you could adapt Pix's Golden Rusted Idol technique and apply that? Not sure.
I agree with you guys about the rust, but If you are a few hundred feet from the wreck there is no way you can see it. I think you would be able to see the colour of rust but not the details of the rust,
Pix's 'Rusted Idol' is close up so the rust is obvious. At least that is how I see it. Of course I bow to the experience of you two, but I think I am right in this case.

That's what I meant Joe. You wouldn't be able to actually see the grain of the rust but you would be able to see the orange reds and browns and they would have a sort of grainy diffusion...no real detail but enough surface that it would reflect back the feeling of texture. Does that make sense?
You folks know that I will try suggestions. This is an upgrade intergrating some of the suggestions made. I do not think I have enough skill to impliment all of them, but this is one way to learn.
Here it is! http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1027030834zvm.jpg

I think the texture really brings the hulk alive Joe! :tu:
If you want to get rid of those 'ridges' in the holes in the hull, you can use the 'Smudge' brush, with ZAdd turned off, and RGB only, and 'push' toward the edge of the holes to tighten up the edge...Using this on your render, re-imported is easiest...
Great update, Joe!!

Now that's what I'm talking about Joe! It makes a huge difference and you carried through on it superbly!! :tu: :tu:
Yep. The rust on the hull was a very nice addition. It adds a lot. :tu:
Wow! That really made a difference! Great work DeeVee! :tu: :tu: :tu:

Kudos Joe...that was a fine addition....and it appears the tablet is working splendidly for ya my friend :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:
Nice image. :tu: :tu: :tu:
Dave
Well I should thank my two friends Jaundel and then Mentat for suggesting the rust.
I must admit that it did make a noticeable difference.
Thanks guys, I guess that is what learning is all about.
