Mostly practicing with deformation sliders in the tool palette, on the way to building more complex ships (John Berkey's starships are among my favorites, but I have a ways to go)

thx you too for this source of inspiration ;)
re: why cut it on the right? -- just felt like it -- late-night space division :D
although since it is meant to be a free-floating object, it doesn't really need to be anchored to the frame -- maybe it gives it a little more heft or mass, I don't know
glad you guys like John Berkey, too :)

Good and interesting work -- I wonder, if you still have the tool you created--you might find some amazing textures/materials ( more glowing like a space vehicle ) by 'trying on' the Material Pack in ZBrush
and in doing so maybe more off the screen depth+ did you "best render" this--it might be fun to try different angles and types of light too--Keep on keepin' on !! more stages please :D :D :tu: :tu:
thanks, Robo -- these are just the first results of my amateur shipyard -- of course I had a more grandiose space-yacht in mind, but bedtime crept up a few days too early and my skills are "in development" :D
I love the Material Pack for all occasions and tried out a bunch of those for the hulls and the green thing in the middle (which is a Gear3d twisted inside out -- gears are definitely worth further exploration for quickie high-tech gizmos)
I did best-render it, and a tip I would give to other newbies is to do a best render occasionally while working, even just spot-checks by dragging from the "cursor-render" button, because some materials and effects (e.g. "glow") look somewhat different with best rendering compared to preview rendering
Here's a great thread about starfields and spaceships (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=007011) if anyone is interested
And a variety of exotic designs in this thread (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=008904&p=1)
