View Full Version : GoZ Update 1 - with Photoshop Support
142280
1100
As part of our commitment to expanding the capabilities of GoZ, Pixologic is pleased to announce the release of our first GoZ update! This update resolves minor issues reported by users of various applications. It also expands support to include modo 501 and Cinema 4D R12.

With this update, GoZ also now supports Photoshop! If you have the Extended version of either Photoshop CS4 or CS5, GoZ now makes it possible to paint directly on your model's texture rather than using PolyPaint. As a result, texture painting can be completely independent of your model's resolution. Simply click the GoZ button to send your model and its texture to Photoshop. There, paint whatever you'd like, in full 3D. You can even flatten the map and paint in 2D -- with or without a visible wireframe! When done, send your model back to ZBrush and the texture will automatically update so that you'll be ready to continue working.

:b3: Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Which software is supported?
A:
Maya 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012
3DSMax 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012
modo 401 SP4-5, 501 SP1-SP2
Cinema4D R11, R12, R13
Photoshop CS4 Extended, CS5 Extended
*Note: Mac users need to use the 32-bit version of Photoshop.
Q: Is Maya 2008 is supported?
A: Officially, no but it is working! We are unable to provide support for this version, however.
Q: Are 3DS Max 9 or modo 301 supported? (Or other officially supported applications with different version numbers?)
A: As the target applications behaviors or internal ways of working may change between versions, we can only support specific versions of any particular application. We do our best to support as many versions as possible but there are limits. Don't forget that you can still edit the topology in any other external 3D package using the OBJ format and import it back to ZBrush while keeping its details!
Q: What about "X" Software?
A: We currently only support the programs listed above. Expect new supported software in the future!
Q: I don't see the GoZ buttons/menus or nothing happens when I try to send my model back to ZBrush from my target application.
A: This is because the installation of the GoZ files in the target application has failed, either partially or in full. This is most often due to permissions issues. Try to force the installation of the GoZ files by going to the ZBrush Preferences >> GoZ menu and clicking the Force Reinstall button. Next, select the application in the list that you want to reinstall. When prompted, accept the permission warning message or enter your administrator login and password, even if you are logged under an account which has administrator privileges.
If this operation fails as well, check the GoZ_Troubleshooting.pdf file located in the folder where you unzipped the GoZ update archive file.
Q: When clicking on the GoZ button, GoZ isn't launching the correct application. How can I fix that?
A: In the ZBrush Preferences >> GoZ menu, click on Update path to [your application], then select from the applications found by ZBrush or if ZBrush can't find the application by itself click on the Browse button and select the application's executable file. To avoid potential issues after this step, click on the Force Reinstall button (also found in the GoZ Preferences) and select your application.
Q: When sending my model from my target application to ZBrush after editing the topology, the polygons are screwed up. How can I fix that?
A: This occurs when the projection range is too high. Undo the import in ZBrush with CTRL/Command+Z. In the Tool >> SubTool menu, reduce the value of the Dist slider (found to the right of the Project All button) to a lower value such as 0.01. You may try other values.
Q : I have scale/position issues when working with modo and GoZ, what am I doing wrong?
A: When manipulating your model in modo, don't forget to do your operations in vertex/edge/polygon mode rather than Item mode. This is because Item mode is similar to editing the object's bounding box and not really the geometry itself.*
Q: I can't find the displacement map in 3DS Max. Where is it?
A: The displacement map is located in the Mental Ray connection as GoZ enables Mental Ray as the default rendering engine.
Q: Can I change the location of the GoZ folders? (By default, they are located in the Users\Public\Pixologic* or Users/Shared/Pixologic folder.)
A: Not at this time.
Q: Is the GoZ SDK available?
A: Yes! For any queries concerning the GoZ SDK please send an email to GoZSDK@pixologic.com. Include your first name, last name, company name and the application (including any in-house studio application) you would like to support.

Yeah, I still don't see how Soft hasn't been figured out and part of this release. However the plugin that was written around here works great as an OBJ Importer/Exporter. Use that until anything official is released.

YEAY!!! I have CS4 extened!!!!
I still wish you and Blender could work something out, but I now have an added option!! Woot!!!
EDIT:
Just tried it out now, WOW!!!! This is so much better than ZApplink!!! I can use the 3D tools in photoshop for this really easy.
I'll be honest, I thought I might have wasted money on PS CS4 Extended, but this makes it worth it!
Thank you Pixologic!
Again, I wish you and Blender could work something out though. I sincerly hope that now they are on official 2.5 release (not 2.5 BETA) someone will take this on. :) Then my life will be complete.

I haven't been able to make it work with Modo 501.
I forced reinstall and it didn't work, then I follow the instructions in the pdf and it didn't work.
I can export from Zbrush to Modo 501 but not back from Modo 501 to Zbrush. I get an error message.
I reverted to Modo 401 and it works as always.
Am I the only one? Clues to wha I could be doing wrong? (I'm on Windows 7)

This is a great new feature.
Question for those of you using Photoshop Extended's 3-D painting feature... how do you like it? Are you actually finding it useful? :qu:
Add me to the list of users who are sad to see no support for XSI still. : (
I'll have to try out the photoshop thing. I was excited when I heard it, until I saw the video of it in action and remembered what Photoshop's 3d mode is like (crash hungry, poor camera controls, etc). At least I know Zapplink+Texture does what I already wanted.

Gotta agree with "oneigekko (member.php?u=17075)" on this.
Are there any plans to roll this feature into zBrush so we can paint inside the core app on a texture map (Like how it works in mudbox and mari.) This way you get to utilize all of zbrush's strengths and speed at handling detailed mesh's.

Blender has Python implementation and can be command line driven. So hopefully this won't be too difficult. Especially as 2.5 is now out of Beta and at stable release. :)
With a bit of luck, this won't even need to be implemented into any Blender source code, just added as a python plugin.

Pretty awesome update...I've been waiting to use something like this so I don't have to polypaint...and it seems to add a workflow of painting multiple textures.
Now, for some reason, when I use GoZ, it doesn't consolidate the visible subtools into a single multi layered 3d scene inside of photoshop... I am guessing this a optimisation...
Also is there a way to GoZ export a SubD lvl 2 to photoshop with Polygroups?

@Willpreston23: you can do this in XSI, if you have GoZSoftimage Lite, and export the model to your scene in XSI, and just create shapes with the Goz imports. XSI will automatically create clusters for the parts of the face :)

04-30-11, 07:52 AM
Its not the same, I've tried Go Z for Maya and Go Z lite for Soft and there's a big difference, I need it to be like Maya which can export multiple subtools with their multiple maps and setting up render trees all at the touch of a button.
Go Z might be useful for certain jobs but I had to abandon it and go through it the old way, :(
Wow. Great. Woo-hoo.
Looks cool but I guess I must have missed the part about GoZ for Softimage or Lightwave.
Oh well, Mudbox has its own GoZ sort of thing for Softimage, plus Maya and max too, and it works amazing with Photoshop and better than GoZ in all respects.
Zbush is cool and all but GoZ isn't the be-all, end-all thing people rave about.

I and another developer have asked for the SDK from pixologic to be able to add this functionality to Blender. Neither of us have heard anything at all from them.
Fingers crossed they will email us soon so we can get started.
Hi Jester,
thanks for your effort, how goes your work on XSI GoZ?
I'm curious why Pixologic ignore XSI, there is a specfic reason?
dustbin1_uk
05-12-11, 12:47 AM
It's not Pixologic ignoring any one software.
The problem is simply that no one has developed the SDK into the Softimage app yet.
They have given Jester the SDK on request and I have been told that Jester is doing this now. It's going to take weeks to develop, test and bugfix. Softimage users are going to be very happy soon.
It's not up to Pixologic to write the integration into any specific software, that's why they released the SDK. it's up to the company that own that software, or it's developers to manage it.

not pixo, the SDK was resleased for the use of other companies for Goz to be intergrated. If AD don't want to make it for XSI, that's their problem, but that's not to say someone else, like jester, can't take it on.
Saying that though. Pixo may have done it for Maya and 3D Max in the first instance to show how it works. Maybe AD now think it's Pixo that have to do it to other software as a result? Who knows....
And lets not forget the fact that AD have Mudbox, a competitor to ZB so probably don't want to do anything too helpful. ;)

goz Photoshop cs5 extended to zbrush
Took me a while to find the goz button in photoshop
its file-automate-gozpluggin
I know everone knew this but me o.o i just couldnt find it written anywhere
so i thought id share the unwritten obvious lol
Hi,
We have just update GoZ at our DownloadCenter ( http://zbru.sh/goz2) with a new build which add the Photoshop CS5 x64 on Mac OSX, but also fix several issues:
Maya launching multiple instances. Please note that it fixes the issues when you were able to send models from Maya to ZBrush. If you don't have the GoZ shelf, it's because of a permission issue on your side and it's not related to the bug which has been fixed.
An offset and/or scale appears when opening ZBrush with a mesh sent from a supported application and sent back to ZBrush.
UVs were deleted sometime when sending a mesh from 3DSMax to ZBrush.
Then please download the last build for your OS and do a new install. The easiest way is to:
Quit ZBrush and the target applications.
Go in your c:\Users\Public\Pixologic (Win) or /Users/Shared/Pixologic (Mac OSX) folder and delete its content (or archive it).
Open the downloaded zip file at the Download Center (http://zbru.sh/goz2) corresponding to your OS and unzip it in a temporary folder.
Browse the unzipped folder until you find the Pixologic folder and open it.
Copy -the content- of this Pixologic folder (GoZApps folder, GoZBrush folder and GoZProjects folder) in your Pixologic folder specified in step 2.
Now go to your ZBrush executable folder and open the ZData/Zplugs folder. (Not the ZStartup/ZPlugs folder!)
Go to your unzipped folder and browse it until you find the ZBrush 4/ZData/ZPlugs folder.
Copy the GoZ.zsc and the GoZDLL.dll (or GoZ.lib on Mac OSX) to the folder specified in step 6
Optionally, you can also copy the content of the unzip folder ZStartup/ExportTamplates folder of ZBrush, but these two files hasn't been edited since the previous update.
Start ZBrush (not an administrator on Windows!) and click on the GoZ button: it will do a new search of target application and reinstall the files if needed. Always accept the administrator prompt message or enter an administrator login and password when requested.
If you have an issue with the install, please check the manual install PDF provided in the zip file.

Hi all!
Maybe I am stupid, or blind. But: where the hell is this folder on my mac?
/Users/Shared/Public/Pixologic (Mac OSX)
Thanx

A number of us are still using C4D R10.5. Any reason why GoZ support was dropped?
Update; GoZ works great with C4D R10.5 ! [even though the documentation states compatibility with R11+] :D
BUT it was not easy to get it to work, as the GoZ_Upgrade_steps instructions have a couple of major errors.
1st problem; the Macintosh Install instructions are incorrect in the placement of the Pixologic folder. There is no Public folder in the Shared folder. So manually creating one, to match the instructions, will result in a plugin failure error.
On a Mac, the Public folder always resides in each users Home folder, not the Shared folder. Ignoring that part of the instructions and placing the Pixologic folder directly in the Shared folder, results in a happy plugin.
2nd problem; The instructions direct to overwrite two files in the ExportTamplates folder. But there is no "ExportTamplates" folder. There is an ExportTemplates folder. If you overwrite the two files in this existing folder, the plugin will fail. So, you must overwrite the two files in the existing "ExportTemplates" folder, then duplicate this folder and rename the duplicate, "ExportTamplates". Then the plugin will work. [not sure what a tamplate is but I'm no programmer] The plugin is made to work with the miss-spelled folder name.
Aside from these two ''Gotchas'' in the instructions, everything works as advertised. :D

IM amazed by pixo to leave out the brute force most powerful 3d app out there .Some of the functionality is already part of SI for displacement set up.

The instuctions do not descibe how to install this for Photoshop and I can't figure it out I'm afraid. Goz in Zbrush doesn't have a listing for updating Photoshop. Do I need to just copy all the files over somewhere? Where? I have Windows 7 64bit and CS5 Extended.

The only instructions I found for Photoshop was about copying a plugin into photoshop which I did. There is no reference to Photoshop inside Zbrush. When I press the Goz button it just sends the model to Sculptrix (the only other sofware on the list that I have). There are no options for sending it to Photoshop. I must be missing something in the installation. I can save the model as an obj and then open that in Photoshop, but I thought I was supposed to be able to use Goz to get it there. When I then tried to send the model to Zbrush using the Photoshop plugin under the automated menu it just gave me an error message.
Hi,
I have a problem : i did an exact clean install like in the upgrade pdf in Goz folder,
i can now export from max 2012 to zbrush without a problem, but the problem is :
i can't export from zbrush to max 2012 !
also : i have this Runtime error when openning Max ( even in the administrator mode ) like in this screeshot :

I'm using Win7 x64.
hope to find a fix for that issue :)
Thank you !

Chakib, I ran into this problem with Max 2012 and fixed it but can't find the exact details of the fix. Here's approximately what I remember it to be.
1. Go to you C > User > Public Pixologic > GoZApps > Max location.
2. I believe it's the Application files ("GoZBrushFromMax, GoZBrushToMax & GoZInitMax). You have to change the permissions manually.
3. Right Click > Properties - Security - Advanced - Owner
4. Make sure your log in is the Owner on those files. If not click the Edit button and make your log in the owner.
Again, this is all from memory and it's something like that but not 100% sure. It definitely fixed that issue though. Right clicking and saying "Run as Administrator" was not sufficient.

Did you check/change the ones in the GoZBrush folder in that same area as well? I think I had changed all 6 of those files (max and ZBrush folders).
Also I'm comparing my files with a newly downladed set of the files. There's this Security section that has been unblocked on my working files. Right Click > Properties - General Tab - "Security: This file camge from another computer...." Click Unblock and Apply, OK.
And of course close both of those programs out before trying to see if it works. It took me a ton of digging to find that solution and I'm surprised I didn't save it somewhere. Again, if I find the exact info that I previously had I will post it.

Hi there,
I downloaded today the lastest GoZ (8 December 20011) update but looks like the export preferences to Maya are reseted automatically to default. The simple export OBJ function works correctly.
Thanks
Export Maya preferences? What do you mean?
SorinLupu
12-09-11, 03:15 AM
Importexport prefererences from ZBrush 4R2 when using GoZ are reseted to default (importing in Maya flipped geometry). Right now I am using all import export preferences unchecked.
You mean that you have changed the default import/export preferences to your own choice, and when using GoZ, these preferences are reseted and not put back to what you defined before (and saved in your config)?

I'm having some difficulty with GoZ for Cinema 4D r13 Mac OS 10.6.8. The C4D script works and sends my base mesh to ZBrush. The GoZ button launches C4D but does not send the updated geometry. The same GoZ set up works perfectly with C4D r12 and earlier.
Any ideas????
I am seeing an odd issue where when a mesh is sent to max, random smoothing groups get assigned to the model. Is there anyway around this, or to turn it off?
Thank you
Edit - Here is an example of the above issue.

I got a bit confused at first with how to install GoZ. Initially I got it to work perfectly between sculptris and zbrush. Then I downloaded the update for PS CS5. After following the two instructions... I now get an error in both sculptris and Photoshop when I press the GoZ tool for either external app. The error I get is on a popup window is...
[FileExecute,gGoZDLLPath,GoZMergeUVs,[StrMerge,subToolPath,appExt]]
I looked through the install and all the files for Zbrush and PS are where they are supposed to be.
Any ideas what I screwed up and how to fix it?
I have heard that Lightwave11 works, but Ihave version 9. Is there a way to take lightwave, or obj files into ZB and vice a versa?

All GoZ does is automate the file transfer. You can manually do everything GoZ does. ZBrush can import/export the OBJ format and in fact that is what GoZ uses for most applications that it connects with.
People were getting files in and out of ZBrush long before GoZ. ;)

The last version of GoZ is provided with ZBrush 4R4. All new versions of GoZ will be provided through the auto update or as an update of ZBrush and won't be available as a separate download.
I go to the damn download center and select 4r4 files and then select goz and I get shuttled to a page with a video, and forum and lots of information but there is no clear link the the actual freakin installation file!!!!!!!!

All Pixologic plugins that are compatible with ZBrush 4R4 are included in a default installation. They're already in your copy of ZBrush and do not need to be separately downloaded.
If you did not do a default installation and chose not to install specific plugins, running the installer again and choosing the "Custom" option will give you the opportunity to add those plugins.

Hi everyone!
I am trying to acquire the update of the plugin GoZ for version of ZBrush 4R4, but I don't find any link for the plugin. I am used the old for version ZBrush 4.0.
I need a lot, because in the old version of ZBrush, I could send models of Daz Studio Pro 4.5 inside of ZBrush and to create new morphs for my characters genesis.
I would like somebody a lot to help myself, for kindness!
Thanks very much for support!

Hi everyone! : D
My sincere excuses on the plugin GoZ for version of ZBrush 4R4.
I imagined that I needed to do a download separately, because the page of the ultimate versions of ZBrush, besides ZBrush 4R4, are there to confuse some people not very familiarized with the software. Thank you very much for the fast answer
of all. I don't know none of you, but I adore this community, because here I only see artists of talented.
Thank you again!

"The last version of GoZ is provided with ZBrush 4R4. All new versions of GoZ will be provided through the auto update or as an update of ZBrush and won't be available as a separate download."
I just did this and GoZ is still not listed in my plug ins; I did NOT do a custom instalation of ZBrush I did the default installation, and I am using the latest version and as I said just did an update. So where is it? and how do I get it?
As a matter of fact I just now ran the installer to the point whrere you can uncheck anything you don't want installed; and Goz is NOT even in that list, so why are you all saying it is included in the 4R4 when it is clearly NOT in mine? And since you cannot download it anymore seperately how am I supposed to get it?
Ok replying to my own post for anyone else who failed "to know already" where to find Goz .. I finally had to ask support and got this response so posting it here for anyone who may still be struggling with this.
The reason you cannot locate GoZ in the installer or in the plugins is because GoZ is no longer a plugin. It is part of ZBrush itself. To get GoZ set up you simply start up ZBrush and from the ZBrush interface you will find GoZ under Preferences > GoZ.

Not using ZAppLink because the color is transferred to the texture map in ZBrush using the same method as Projection Master. But if you want to paint your texture map in Photoshop can't you simply import a (low res) OBJ?

Yeah that would work. Im not familiar enough with the 3d side of photoshop. Ive had a quick poke around but couldnt see an obvious save texture option. Any idea of the maximium poly count it can handle? low-res meshes arent as low as they used to be lol Im basically trying to decide if I can use photoshop to texture my low polymesh or if I need to get a dedicated 3d paint option like Mari. 3dcoat does a good job of painting a low res mesh too but I would rather use photoshop :)

If you select the Layer and right-click you'll have an 'Export 3D Layer' option. The texture will be exported with the 3D file (you can choose formats).
No idea on maximum poly counts but it will depend on your system anyway.

is there a GOZ plugin for 3DS Max 2013 and Maya 2013?
solomon: GoZ in ZBrush 4R4 and 4R5 supports both Maya and 3DSMax 2013.
Brutikong: it's because you need the Extended version of Photoshop.
Hi guys i have a question :
what about adding max 2013 and max 2012 paths inside GoZ ? i mean i want the two paths inside zbrush :s
please show me how if possible !
You can't store by default two paths for the same application, you need to set the new path in the preferences each time you need to change of Max version.

The correct version of GoZ is installed automatically as part of your ZBrush 4R5 installation. Simply launch ZBrush 4R5 and use GoZ to export a file. The first time you do so, it scans your computer for compatible applications and installs the necessary components for the one you wish to use. That includes the GoZ button in the other application to send files back to ZBrush.

I have R4 so I guess GoZ isn't already installed.
I have R4 so I guess GoZ isn't already installed.
It was included with 4R4 as well. But why haven't you upgraded to 4R5 yet, since it's a free upgrade?
Just a note about GoZ and ZBrush installers: When you install an upgrade then uninstalling the previous version, GoZ may be removed from your computer as its files are in common in both installs. Then it is strongly advised to de-install first the current version before doing a full ZBrush install.
This problem will be avoided in the next release of ZBrush, but always take care of GoZ files which are located outside of ZBrush folder.
