Ring design - Updated

[Slosh]

A simple experiment in jewelry design. I know Stonecutter will have some comments on the diamonds, and likely DeeVee on the design of the ring itself. Any and all comments, suggestions are welcome.

Well as a jeweller as well as a gemcutter, Brian, I would have to say I think the ring is excellent, and a really nice design..

As a gemcutter, I think the material for the diamond needs some tweaking, but you'll get that down...

The only thing negative thing I can find is the light on the left diamond is too bright and washed-out.

Other than that, I'm stumped on what other suggestions to give you. :confused: Great job on the ring. :tu: :tu:

I will give this a try. As you know I not only design jewelry but I manufacture it as well. I have found over the years that a design must not only be attractive, but functional.

The reason why I have a question mark at functionality is because from this view I cannot see if the edges would catch on clothing and so on, there is nothing that upsets a woman more than to have a piece of jewelry catch in her nylons :ex: If the protruding edges are rounded enough, then :tu: :tu:
How would I change it? I would keep the design outside the ring and flatten the inside so that it would be more comfortable, that way the fold over the edge is removed so the chances of it catching on anything is reduced.

Rings - don't buy 'em, don't wear 'em, but this one looks to me that it might be a tad uncomfortable to wear with all the internal sculpting.

But as an object purely to look at and enjoy - superb! :tu: :tu: :tu:

I agree with DeeVee on the points, but I've done partial-band ring designs that looked uncomfortable, but when they are put on, feel great! ;) In fact, the most comfortable shape for a ring is actually a rounded-square, a design dating back to second-dynastic Egypt...I've made quite a few of them, including one my Lady Simone wears now... :)

I agree that the rounded oval ring is one of the most comfortable designs, I have also made several of those out of both metal and stone.I works very well for stone rings as it is not as easily broken by the wearer as one made round.
I just think that this ring designed by Brian would be a lot more comfortable without the ridges inside.

the only thing I have to add, DeeVee just did....very nice looking on the outside though...I would wear it....and if I keep getting any fatter, you won't even have to resize it :)

I took everones' suggestions and here is the final result. Thanks to SC for the site with the gemstones. They are awesome! I downloaded a zip file with about 13 different cuts.

Smoothing out the interior of the ring was more of a bear than I would have ever thought! I ended up Zcutting a cylinder through the middle of it. Worked like a charm, but lining it up was very hard.

Mr. Braun...hopefully I got the highlights on the diamonds better as you suggested. More spotlight and more blue reflections. (Also per WingedOne,less washed out)

Joe, you (and everyone else) are right about the inside edges, although I am not convinced about the comfort level. The old ring would actually have been round inside, despite the protrusions. However, I do believe it would have looked like a bad fit with all of the "airholes" around the finger. Hopefully the sharp edges only look sharp, but are now rounded enough not to cut her man's face when she strokes him lovingly :p

That said, here is the update. I have included an inset of the ring before final render. The new lighting capabilities of ZBrush are phenominal, despite the render time (45 minutes on this one!!!)

This is a great update Brian. This would be easy for a modeler to model in wax, and then cast in the metal of your choice.

And it looks more functional now, though I bow to the superior knowledge of SC and DeeVee in this respect - I've never worn a ring, so I was just guessing as to the comfort factor.

I don't wear any jewelry either, Flycatcher. It seems a big nuisance to me, with the exception of my ever-present cheapo $19 wristwatch, which is a necessity. That's why it's so ironic that I made jewelry. I never wear it. Frustrates the heck out of my mother and sister, who are always trying to give me rings and necklaces for birthdays and Christmas. I finally, after 32 years, have convinced them not to waste their money. It really frustrated my exwife. I wore my wedding ring, but complained about it constantly.

Wow! georgeous ring. It looks like it could be sitting in a jeweller's catalogue page. So realisitic. There is only one little thing that struck me and that is that the diamonds now look like they are silver (metalic). I don't know ZBrush that well, but there must be a way to get a more gem like look, maybe a glass like material??? I don't know. I like the work anyhow!

I think the stones deserve more specularity
