I realized, when using the MRGBZ grabber, that the alpha it creates is perfect for doing 3d Random Dot Stereograms. Here is one for fun. If you see it right, it is a character from one of my recent pictures.

Nice work Slosh, I see the face. :)

I did a similar experiment in this thread (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=002474) a while ago. (It uses red/blue glasses.)

i neverever managed to see anything in one of them so i can only guess: teddybear? anyway, in case it works for those apt to decipher this type of image you have discovered a kicka** approach to create them!!!

I see it there. :) How did you create the "stare-e-ogram"? Did you use a separate program?

Muvlo - I saw your red/blue image. Wish you would share a how-to. I don't know how much to angle each view to get it right.

Just to relieve the cross-eyed headaches, here is the image you should see:

Matthew - I used a 3rd party program. Very good one...it can do random dots, color, b&w, or you can use a texture, like your favority photo instead of dots. It's called StereoCreator.

Even when I know what I'm looking for, and know wher it is, I can't find it. Oh well.

Hi Slosh, about the how-to, look in the same thread, there's a script. :)

ZeroBGM, when you first start looking at these images, a good trick is too get very close to the image, and then don't look at it. Stare straight through it, essentially. Then move your head back, and if you're lucky, your eyes will focus on the picture. Slosh's has a lot of depth though, so it may be a hard one to start with. :)

I never had any luck with these things. I keep trying, but all that happens is that I get a headache. :sigh:

All those frustrated times staring at these puzzles in grade 5 are sure paying off now! lol, you have to create the depth plane behind the picture you are actually seeing, so if you are staring at the computer screen you have to throw your focus beyond the computer screen.
Hope this helps some people out. lol, however did they figure this out anyway.

I too without the color saw only the eye sockets and the pointed nose but cool I must say! :tu: :)

PS Just don't stare at them too long - you could get headaches. :P

I used to edit a book that had hundreds of stereograms of protein chemical structures, all of which neededd to be checked. I got to the point some days where I found it hard to see straight.

These stereograms were different from the one above, using just two instances of the same image slightly rotated relative to each other.

If I remember correctly, the angle difference between the left and right images is 3 degrees about the Y axis. For print, the optimal distance between the two images is about 65 millimetres, about the same distance as between the eyes. If they are too far apart you just have to move back from the picture; it's difficult to overcome if they are too close together.

This quick image was put together in Zbrush by doing this and seems to work :)

Whoa. Pretty cool fx to be sure.

Only problem I'm having is that the face is carved *into* the screen. Like I'm viewing it from the inside looking out. And if I change my focus a bit, I can see two carved in heads.

And the tube thingie, pretty neat too.

Actually I believe that stuff like this is good to look at when working on the ol' puter, as they make the eye muscles work a bit, altering focal distances and such is something one doesn't usually do while chained to the silicon beastie.

Aaaargh!!! I hate these things!

The only time I've ever managed to see anything in them was at the end of one rather long New year's Eve party. Even in my alcohol-assisted state I could still only see anything in a couple of them, and very quickly lost it again at that. Still I must admit they are startling when they work. Sadly this one doesn't for me - but I'm certain that's my failing, not yours. ;)

Hi bonecradle
Very good demonstration and not headache with yours, just put your face at the good distance!
Bravo ! :tu:
For the other sterogram you must cross-eyed !
Ok you can see another reality but with an anormal use of your view !
