Good on you for purchasing ZBrush! The secret to creating a good picture starts with the good ol' pencil and paper. Sketch everything out first and then decide how the picture is going to be broken down into seperate parts (eg, hands, arms, torso, head, etc). Once all the planning is done, its a matter of creating all the bits needed, (and SAVING them), usually with the default document size. When you have all the bits created and painted, create a new large document size and start placing all your bits into place. Then it's a matter of using the other tool's in the toolpalette to create the fiberhair, snakehooks, bumps, blurring-the-seams. And finally start playing with the lights to get shadows and highlights, while also playing around with the render settings, (fog, etc).
Thats a super-basic discripition of the steps. I've left out materials and other bits and pieces, but don't underestimate the good old pencil and paper stage.
