hi all,
been playing with the full version of zbrush for a while now and having great fun being amazed by what it can do,i have one question about exporting .obj's,in zbrush they look great but when importing into poser or vue 4 they become really sharp and all the smooth sides have gone. There must be a simple answer to resolve this, help is needed to save hours of wasted modelling !!!!
thanks in advance

Hello all. I too am new to ZBrush and am having the same problem when importing into Strata for rendering.

It sounds like for some reason the destination software's subdivion algorithms aren't kicking in.

In Poser, I know that they are always active, and that if there aren't enough polygons for it to work with, then it starts to get angular. Have you tried increasing the mesh density a bit before exporting? You can do so by clicking the Tool>Modifiers>Deformation>Divide button. If that doesn't help, let me know. I haven't had any trouble with Poser, provided there were enough polygons in the OBJ.

For other programs, is there SOME smoothing, or are the edges completely sharp? If the latter case, make sure that the software has subdivision turned on. If the former, see if you can increase the amount of subdividing. If you can't, then try the approach of increasing the polygon count before exporting.

Let me know if that helps!

For my particular set of problems, I took a model from poser, brought it into ZBrush for texturing and then straight back into Poser, everything worked fine. Then I took a model I made wholy in Zbrush, textured it and ran it through Deep Exploration, converted into VRML2 and brought it into Strata, worked fine, came through with the textures and all the polygons in place. Then I took a model from Poser, brought it into ZBrush, textured it, ran it through DE and took it into Strata and YIKES it looked like it went thru a blender. Either some of the normals were flipped or some of the polygons just didn't make it. Not sure but I think you're right, and it's a Strata problem for me at least. Woulnd't be the first time. Oh well, the adventure continues....... :p

thanks aurick,
pressed the divide button before exporting a mesh and opened it in vue, worked a lot better so tried pressing the divide button twice and hey presto the mesh came into vue as it appeared in zbrush.Guess it was all to do with the polygon count being too low.
checked out your site while i was browsing, looks good, hopefully i can get something worth while done and post it to you.
thanks again
