View Full Version : how to make a bowl or plate?

could someone point me to a tutorial or zscript on good ways to make a bowl or plate?

I have played with tucking a Sphere3d into itself with [radial] Z-symmetry on, but am not sure that's the best way

I have thought of starting with a squished Sphere3d and using Z-sub to chop off the top and then hollow it out, but then what about a rounded edge?

(just preparing in case I get Iron Chef Fever :D )

thanks for any tips

The spin profile is one place to start, but if you take a Sphere tool, flatten it, and turn on Symmetry, and Radial, you can do a bowl readily that way as well...Someone will probably beat me to it, since I will be leaving my studio soon, but if you want, email me at stoneboat@lightspeed.ca, and I'll do a tutorial for you showing some different ways to produce a bowl tomorrow... ;)

Here's a bowl done using the Sphere tool, and Radial symmetry...

Goto
1 (Tools) / sweep profile 3D
2 (Modifyers) under Tool
3 (Intilize)
4 Use the Graph to shape your plate or Bowl

To ensure a good edge and sharp details on your bowl/plate you might want to lower the HDiv and VDiv of your tool, then use the radial symmetry with a small Draw Size to move each ring of points individually. :)

I do it like Stonecutter says. Use zadd or zsub to shape your dish. I like to turn the z intensity down. That gives better control.

Here's a sample, not great, but gives you the idea.

I think you did a great job Ms.Lee why you keep underestimating your work is beyond me. This is great work and I am sure that the information you have given will be quite helpfull.

thank you all for your advice -- Sweep Profile works better for me, although I do like the nice rounded edge on DLee's dishes, it gives a sense of their weight and what they would sound like :tu: :)

Played with z-height slider for shallowness as well as the thickness slider (in the tool palette for Sweep Profile)

Well done H :ex: that is a very nice looking utensil you have created. :tu: :tu: :tu: :D

1 Tools
2 Deformation
3 inflat

Looks like a plate to me Havran ~s~ Good job. What is nice about z is there is so many different ways to do things.

Thanks Dee. It's cause nothing has measured up to what I was planning ~S~

thank you again for your technical tips and compliments :)

Culinary Critic: "this dish is too salty, really! and that metallic aftertaste! it makes me wonder if it's radioactive ... I expected better from this chef"

Rosanjin Scholar: "this dish makes me rock in my chair with exultation, it expands the human palate, a perfect harmony of past and future!"

:D

but really, I should go gather some food materials and textures (I don't suppose it's a good idea to put a slab of tofu on my scanner) and learn how to cast shadows and garnish with pine needles and maple leaves

Well here is a bowl I did with radial Z-symmetry and a small ZScript to show what I did. Just my 2 cents

Another option:

:b4: 3Dsphere
::Deform ::Size y -95
::Deform ::Gravity -100
::Deform ::Taper 40

You can then resize on the y Axis for a plate...

Thanks for this info. You guys will have me modeling yet. I can see where these can be used to spruce up some still lifes and so on. I will certainly give it a try.

Okay Havran... you bring up something that's been bothering me for a while now.

What the heck is a Rosanjin scholar? I tried looking it up on the web, but it wasn't incredibly clear.

And... did you ever see the Saturday Night Live parody.... as they introduce the guests it's the normal fair until they come to "a famous murderer". Combine that with a secret indgredient of eel farts and you have a fine comedic sketch.

Nice bowls everyone.

I had a little play a couple of weeks ago with both the Sweep Profile method and using radial symmetry on a sphere. Both worked well and were easy to control, but after a bit of pushing and pulling, some of those I did using radial symmetry developed a funny little spike under the base at the centre where the south pole of the sphere would have been.

I remember seeing an old thread about this mesh problem and how to avoid it in another context but can't trace it now and can't think what to search under. Ideas anyone?

Furious George:

short bio of Kitaoji Rosanjin (http://www.noguchi.org/rosanjin.html)

a google.com search just on "rosanjin" will turn up other links about him

Excellent... 1 question answered.

When I did my Rosanjin search before I came up with ceramics/pottery but not the artist himself. Thank you.

But seriously... tell me that the Rosanjin scholar on Iron Chef doesn't look like an Asian Colonel Sanders (which is kind of funny in it's own right, KFC not exactly being high cuisine).
