Hello everyone,
This is my first time posting to this forum. I've been lurking for some time as I've had really nothing to contribute. I've had Zbrush for a about a year, used it once in a while but never really took the time to investigate even a tenth of its power. That is until I read the article by Ken Brilliant in the final issue of 3D Artist.
In his article he gave examples of using Zbrush in conjunction with Lightwave, a program I have used for many years. Suddenly I had a reason to dig into ZBrush. I decided to start with modeling a head. Coming from a fully 3D app backgroung it seemed like the logical choice. Once I got started I was hooked. This is the first app I've used which has embodied the ability to truly scuplt 3D in a 2D environment. Lightwave has similar tools, but they don't give the same control and feedback speed that Zbrush does, and I think its precisely this combination that makes modeling in ZBrush so much fun. Not to mention giving you the freedom to explore shapes without worrying about the mesh to much. Anyway, this image shows clockwise from the upper left corner, my high res(poly) ZBrush Tool then a DOTS display of the poly-reduced optimized mesh which I exported as an OBJ file. I then imported this Object file into Lightwaves Modeller and built the low-res poly cage in the lower right corner. The image in the lower left corner shows this low-res poly cage with sub-division surfaces turned on, and in the center is the fully textured model rendered in Lightwave.
In closing I'd just like to say how thankful I am for having come across Ken's article in 3D Artist. It has inspired me into a new world of discovery with my new favorite program, ZBrush!!!
